bdog Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 (edited) Around here, we don't see too many tandem axle flat deck car haulers, so I decided to convert the model to a single axle with dual wheels. Also, the steering rack didn't provide a very good turning radius and the long axle shafts made the tires shift around in the wheel wells too much. No extra parts were used in this mod with the exception of shorter front axle shafts. The ones that came in the kit can be used, but they stick out by 2 units. I made a number of cosmetic changes too and added an arm to make operating the switch on the battery box easier. I wish they made the switches a little less touchy on the battery box. For the rear, I just removed the existing assembly, used some blue pins to mate the wheels together and then plugged the axles back onto the beams. A 1 unit bushing keeps the tires from rubbing. The one thing I don't like about this is that there is not much support for beam the axles are in, so if you put something heavy on the truck, there might be some flex. The steering rack was extended from 7 to 11 which moves the pivot point closer to the wheels and makes the turning action a little more realistic. A 1/2 bushing is used on the axle to provide clearance. There is a red 2 unit beam that needs to be removed from the steering linkage that comes from the top of the cab, this will enable full travel in both directions. After removing the 2 unit beam, there is actually too much travel, causing tire rub, the two blue axle pins limit the travel. Edited June 19, 2010 by bdog Quote
DLuders Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 (edited) You did a nice job modifying the standard 8264 "B Model" Flatbed Truck: Edited June 19, 2010 by dluders Quote
Countdown Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 Very nice simple mod; I also think we have'nt had a Technic set with double axle, double wheels for a long time. For some odd reasons i'm obsessed with 8264-B, since I got it originally last year, I've been trying to upgrade it for a bigger, better version; alas no satisfying results. Even bought a second and third set to make it extra-large. I think over the last year, I'm at the 4th or 5th iteration of of the model. My ultimate goal is a 8264-B melded with the 8258 at 25 studs wide. Anyway, enough rambling, very good mod; For everyone else, Ithink the 8264-B is one of the best b-models in years! -Nick Quote
Sam42 Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 Nice modification, the 2 axle layout makes the model a lot more realistic> I always preferred the b model for this set myself, Quote

I also find my 8258 incomplete without a flatbed :) On a slightly different note, has anyone come across MOC/Instructions removing the PF from the 8264 A or B? I've got use for the LA (and might as well remove the M-motor as well) and want to salvage it from this model. Quote
