As an avid Civilization junkie I figured that with a new game coming out, it was time for it to get it's own thread.Civilization V is coming out September 21st, 2010 so we've got three months until release as of now.

Here is Ign's page with updates and articles from E3:Link

So just sit back, watch for updates, and discuss...

I hadn't heard that there was another one on its way, so thanks for bringing that to my attention, Forresto!

I liked the previous Civilization Revolution very much and a sequel will be fantastic. Can't wait! :classic:

Like ADHO, I've only played Civilization Revolution, so I'd be new to playing it on my computer. I hope this time they let you keep playing after you've won (e.g get to Alpha Century, but still be able to keep playing if you desired (maybe even on the planet (maybe even letting you name the planet (maybe more brackets! ))).

Also, Churchill for English campaign. Maybe even gender options.

Civ is one of the best game series (ever) made. It makes you forget about time completely when you play. Can't wait for it !

I personally think that civ is played better on PC. That's why I have my doubts on civ revolution

Civ has sucked more hours of my life than any other game, from version 2 onwards, though probably 3 took the most time. I love 4, but it played a bit faster, no 20 hour games.

I will get 5 as soon as I can.

Seconded.

I still play Civ3 now and then.

Sadly Civ4 never caught me and I rediscovered Alpha Centauri (Alien X-Fire) instead.

They've even made an upgrade so that it worked on my WinXP

Hopefully we'll see a new version of that game too eventually.

I can't wait for Civ5 - it looks awesome from the screenshots we've seen so far.

Here's a Civilization V annonymous video which is too freaking hillarious. It's an official trailer for Civ V that is too good.

How do you embed videos by the way  ?

I never really liked the latest Civilisation instalments such as III. I only played with Civilisation II and it practically took most of my gaming time away by exploring one could possibly attain and explored all kinds of mechanisms to reach the peak. I can just keep on playing the earlier version and I still have them on my PC. Although the graphics is not impressive but for a game back in the 1996, this is one of the all time favourite games ever.

And, to bring myself back on topic, I will check out what is Civilisation V is all about.

I'm a bit like WhiteFang I've not really gone past CivII (they need to return the amaing high council videos!) but I will take a look at it when it comes out and see if it looks worth the investment in not just cash but time.

Let me join the ranks of Civilization fanboys... I totally LOVE that game, but to be honest I still prefer the original Civilization and its follow-up (branded as a bastard offspring of sorts :D), Colonization, which to this day has remained severely underrated. I haven't spent too much time playing Civilization 4, although I definitely liked the changes they'd made - I will however buy Civ 5 when I can and try to make up for that  Oh, and thanks for the heads-up, Forresto! I used to review games as an editor of a magazine back in the day, but since then I've lost all touch with the gaming world :/

A big demo video (played by one of the game's developers) gives an in depth starter vid on how the new game design will be played out. I am so getting it now, you can move over Clone Turbo Tank

Ground combat in this game may be one of the best most realistic ground combat ever in any RTS game. The strategy seems to make it more like actual battles and the fact you have to really think about it in greater detail is amazing. I was worried that this new game would be completely overwhelming (that's what I kind've felt about Civ IV) but from what i've seen it's pretty streamlined. I'll be there first in line when the game comes out you can trust me

Love the graphics, but I'll probably wait for the price to drop before purchase.

That's partly what I was thinking so I don't know if i'll try getting it tuesday.

Small bump. (okay, not so small, but...)

I just got the game a couple weeks ago, and being a newcomer to Civ I'm finally starting to get into it. I daresay it's claiming some of my LEGO time.

So... anybody else here find themselves obsessed with it? Anyone want to discuss strategy? And of course, the all-important question - which do you think is the best faction? Me personally, I favor the Russians. Getting enough strategic resources that you can build (basically) as many trebuchets and knights as you want and go on a medieval blitzkrieg is a lot of fun.

I haven't bought Civilisation V yet, but I am actually playing II during my free time.

I don't think I am able to adapt to those new high end graphics. I think generally, it will be a fun strategy game. Maybe I will grab it if the price ever drops.

I got the game a couple of months ago. While I agree its a terrific game, I don't see myself getting really obsessed with it. Its a really good game though, its thought out well, its got good graphics, awesome game features and the factions are really thought through well. However I think because it is turn based it doesn't have the flowing gameplay like age of empires does. I do love how you can "talk" with other leaders too. Having them love you or hate you really gives the game strategy as to who to partner up and who to kill. My favourite faction has to be the Romans. I don't know why, I cant even remember if their faction bonuses are good but I just like them and see what could've happened if Rome didn't collapse.

I got it and enjoyed it somewhat, but it really isn't as well thought out as Civ 4 was.

The civ-states are great, and I like the hexagonal layout, but the one army per spot makes the game laborious, especially late game. After five or six games, I booted up in 4 again.

It is an amazing game though, and easily I've played more civ hours than any other game ever. Nurturing a city into an empire makes it so personal.

I really enjoyed the Iroquois in Civ 5. They can run through the forest like it was regular turf, meaning you can explore twice as fast, and invade twice as fast. In civ, your starting base is most important, and if you can get three cities set up quick, you can really kick megablocks.

That site has resources to turn you into Genghis Khan in a week

Funny, because those are the main features that made me buy the game. I used to play RTS, but the turn-based gameplay makes it easier to think strategically and less about clicking fast enough to get your troops from Point A to Point B before the enemy does. (bonus to that: I can play the game with my laptop's trackpad) And the one army per tile I though made it much more important to consider the logistics.

I know this is quite a bump, but if there are any fans still here, there is a new expansion pack, 'Civilization V: Gods & Kings'. As the title suggests, religion is back from Civilization IV, and they are as follows:

  • Buddhism
  • Christianity
  • Confucianism
  • Hinduism
  • Islam
  • Judaism
  • Shintoism
  • Sikhism
  • Taoism
  • Tengriism
  • Zoroastrianism

Along with Religion, Espionage is back, along with Embassies for Diplomacy enhancement, and an AI enhancement to allow naval combat. There is also 3 new Scenarios (about the fall of Rome, the medieval era, and a Victorian science-fiction scenario(Steampunk?)), 27 new units (such as early tanks, Machine Gunners and Pictish Warriors), 13 new buildings (none known as of yet), 9 new wonders (such as the Terracotta Army, and the Great Mosque of Djenné), and 9 new playable civilizations (the only known news civilizations are Carthage, Celtia, Netherlands, Byzantium and the Mayans).

Some screen shots:

I've only ever play Civ IV. Did not find it too interesting though. It's okay, but I much prefer Anno or Age of Empires. I guess the movement in turns instead of free play I do not find so exciting. It's okay, but I kind of figure that if you're going to do that than you may as well play a board game. I honestly prefer board games, despite the computer games being a lot more interesting and detailed, because I can play them with others, whereas my internet connection will never let me play a computer game online with other players. Way too slow.

Real-time has lots of fast-paced action, and I know some people who can't stand the slow pace and in-depth decisions required by Civ. Turn-based lets you focus more on your decisions, though. Me, I like to set the game on Marathon so the pace is as slow as possible. (that also gives me more time to play with my army before it becomes outdated and I have to throw more Gold at it, which is especially nice when I play the Babylonians and can enjoy around five hundred Turns of domination by Bowmen)

True. I suppose it's different for each person. I do find it difficult sometimes in Anno when I am fighting a battle and trying to keep up to date on that, and then an enemy attacks one of my supply lines and the people start complaining. In that way, turn-based games can be better.
