danim Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 (edited) Here is my Moc of Bricklingston's research vessel she has a helipad, RHIB, ROV and a submarine and is capable of travelling anywhere in the world the rear of the ship the RHIB is used for transporting personnal to the ship as well as providing launch support for the ROV and the sub the bridge has a captian and navigator/ crane operator while down below deck there is the ROV operator and the professor with his lab, also seen is the hite lifeboats The sub being launched by the crane, as you can see the RHIB is on support while the deckhand is traking the movements of the sub and crane however before they send down the sub the ROV is launched, the RHIb is just off camera and for visits to remote locations where the RHIB and the ship can't go you can always take the helicopter Hope you have enjoyed this tour of RV Discovery, now off to explore the worlds oceans please comment , critisisms welcome as well Edited July 2, 2010 by danim Quote
lightningtiger Posted July 2, 2010 Posted July 2, 2010 Nice one 'damin' - all you need now is a shipwreck to dive on ! Good MOD's to the old fire boat and making it a dive ship I'm a conformist! ! Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 The ship is pretty good, as well as the dive ship, though I'm not so sure about the mini-chopper (it looks to light and might be easily blown away by the wind). Quote
danim Posted July 3, 2010 Author Posted July 3, 2010 thanks for the comments lightning tiger, yes it is based on the fire boat hull because I decided Bricklingston have enough small fire craft that they do not need a larger craft. It is not just shipwrecks they dive but also underwater geographical formations as well as new sealife KielDaMan, glad you like it, the sub is based on the one from set 6774 apart from the lights added to the top and the claw. The helicopter is a bell 47 which is the same helicopter used on Jacques-Yves Cousteau's RV Calypso Quote
Siegfried Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Traditionally helo-pads are at the back of a ship; that way if there's a crash it'll fall into the sea or it can be easily pushed off the side. It'd also have a tendency to take off that TACAN / SATCOM dome on approach. I'd be scared to be on this ship during landings! Quote
danim Posted July 3, 2010 Author Posted July 3, 2010 (edited) Hi Siegfried the helicopter on the bridge is taken from the british ship RFA Dilligance would the satcom be the radar on the top of the bridge, if so I will move that to the back Edited July 3, 2010 by danim Quote
Siegfried Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Hi Siegfried the helicopter on the bridge is taken from the british ship RFA Dilligance ...and 101 points to you! I've never seen that one before! You might note though that with that ship the platform extends past the the side of the ship on both sides for safety; I'd expect that landings are done cross-deck and as stationary as possible. Even though I admit you have one-upped me, if you're basing off that design (a rather stupid one IMHO) it should be on the bridge, not projecting off it, and it should be wider. would the satcom be the radar on the top of the bridge, if so I will move that to the back Satcom isn't radar, but yeah that's what I meant. Even so, RFA Dilligance has the mast (and stack ) right next to the pad so I can't fault you for accuracy! (Honestly that pad position is in a stupid place; I'm going to be having nightmares for weeks now after seeing that photo. I hope it's rarely used; I looked and I can't find any photos with a chopper on it.) Quote
danim Posted July 3, 2010 Author Posted July 3, 2010 (edited) RFA Dilligance is not the only ship to have the helicopter deck off the bridge, just have a look at this ship or this one which are more what my ship looks like Edited July 3, 2010 by danim Quote
Siegfried Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 RFA Dilligance is not the only ship to have the helicopter deck off the bridge, ...which doesn't make the design any smarter. (The second photo doesn't count; it's on the stern of the ship.) Do note thought that these ships have one thing in common; no helo on the deck. Ships with platforms like this generally don't carry choppers; they just use the platform for stores transfer. Leaving a chopper on a platform like these will add too much top-weight causing the ship to become unstable, and with no hangar the chopper will be exposed to the elements. I do think this discussion is detracting from your MOC however, for which I do apologise. As an ex-sailor I was just offering a suggestion; feel free to ignore it! Quote
danim Posted July 3, 2010 Author Posted July 3, 2010 it is not really distracting from my moc, if you feel the flight deck is not sutable where would you suggest moving it as the back has the sub and rov. I have added in bracing from the bow of the ship using two grey arials which makes it look slightly better. Also as a side note on ships the heli is not always held in a hanger, just look at the RV Calypso Quote
Siegfried Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 it is not really distracting from my moc, if you feel the flight deck is not sutable where would you suggest moving it as the back has the sub and rov. Well I think it's too small, but if you bring the bridge forward there'll be room... much like there was on RV Calypso. (I'm planning on making a survey craft soon; you'll have to make some comments on mine! ) Quote
danim Posted July 8, 2010 Author Posted July 8, 2010 I have rebuilt a lot of the ship after taking Siegfried's advice I have removed the top helipad and have moved it to the rear as well as adding in another deck to themain structure will post pics hopefully by the end of the day, if not tommorow Quote
Artifex Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Wow! I love it! when I was a kid, I used to fantasyze I was in Jacques Costeau team of explorers. I even built some Lego ships with helicopters and small boats. Your MOC looks just fantastic! I'm a conformist!! Quote
danim Posted July 13, 2010 Author Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Well RV Discovery has been in dry dock after the owners decided they wanted to keep the helicopter on the ship and the ship saftey team lead by Mr Siegfried who advised the owner that they could not keep the helicopter on the flight deck where it was. Also it was decided to add funnels as the crew were getting covered in soot as the fumes had nowhere to escape as well as them adding in a new comms system anyway on with the pics the new rear the lab which has grown slightly even thought the superstructure has been moved foward as the ROV control unit has been moved upstairs The new ROV command room and the new bridge what you will noticed is that the rooms are modular, this allows me to take it apart more easily as well as adding in new modules that I think may be required Please tell me what you think Edited July 13, 2010 by danim Quote
