Seeing this new minifig

leg8684_20_a.jpg.jpeg

I started thinking about the possibility that TLG can create the Ancient Theme... chariots, ships with oars, Greek temples, the trojan horse, inclusive gods. :cry_happy:

TLG has the design of persian helmets and weapons (from prince of persia), and now, they have desing of greek helmets :sweet:

They has the viking ship design, with some modification, they will have the greek's oar ships

what do you think of that?

I gotta say I think it would be a really good move for TLG. I mentioned it in the last survey I sent them. If they put together some quality chariots and ancient looking buildings, I'd buy it up. Has potential for some really great minifigs too.

They could build some great columned buildings and fountains, a few arches, cool statues and courtyards, Roman baths and aqueducts... I'm surprised they haven't done it yet!

There have been discussions about a Greek or Roman theme even before the launch of the minifig series (e.g., this topic). I'm afraid the release of this minifig in the minifig series will more likely point to there not being a Greek theme anytime soon, because these were designed to not be related to any current or future lines. Just like there most likely won't be a circus theme because of the release of the clown (series 1) and the ring master (series 2), a 'Baywatch' theme because of 'Pamela' and the surfer (series 2), or a resurrection of the ninja or wild west themes. But, you never know of course.

But TLG has to carefully think about how well new themes will sell, and I'm afraid that an Antiquity/Mythology theme would only be bought by AFOLs (unless it would be tied to some popular license like Percy Jackson, in which case it still wouldn't be the theme that many army-builders are after).

I just don't think such a theme - as great as it would be for people like us - would appeal to the modern children. :sceptic:

Rick from one Rick to another Rick, please enlighten us to where LEGO said that these minifigs would not be used again.? LEGO never said that but people assumed it a great deal, but nowhere was it said so by LEGO.

actually look at a certain competitor of LEGOs which LEGO usually copies about 3 years too late, they recently had Roman and Circus lines which did great so you think LEGO will not jump on that band wagon? oh yeah were gonna get Ancients and get them pretty soon, wouldn't be surprised if they come out next year.

I personally think it's a waste to have created a unique mold to create a helmet of a minifig and never use it again! :hmpf_bad:

I think (and I want) that the TLG can be use all the new minifigs collection to develop all new topics, and so once and for all, let the nasty Disney product's

Nothing can be considered impossible for Lego, a Roman theme would actual sell with kids, why ? History at school, programs on tv, films they hear about, etc., imagine it building a siege engine and having battle packs to go war with, of course in typical Lego style not really taking side except maybe soliders vs. gladitors.......'I'm Spartacus'......I'm a conformist! ! :sweet:

I think they certainly will. LEGO has had a huge amount of new themse in the last decade, many licensed but no reason why they won't have a licensed theme in future than is based on some film to do with greeks or romans or cavemen!

I think TLG will eventually do this historic theme. I mean, people will get tired of the usual stuff so there will come a time that a new theme should be introduced. It's not a question of "will it ever be done?" but "when will it be done?".

It's true that this is a tricky theme to achieve; on the one hand you have a whole plethora of background that you could work with:

Plenty of Greek city-states, distinct architecture and armor to make for a unique theme, as well as an endless supply of mythological tales can make designing sets a breeze.

On the other hand interest in this period of history is not present by itself in young kids. (Unlike knights which are always present in popular culture and movies)

If they are to do this successfully they must present it in a very creative and informative way, to rouse interest in the ancient, for example telling a very modern story but setting it in the BCE.

A very clever way they can do this is by creating a theme somewhat along the lines of "Mythical Heroes Vs. Monsters" and then creating numerous sets of monsters who face off against a faction of hoplites and "heroes". It will be to ancient themes, what Fantasy was to castle :classic:

Let's hope it happens!!

actually you would be surprised by what kids find enjoyable these days 10 out of 10 times my neices and nephews came over they went playing with my Romans and Greeks first and left my Knights and such alone.

I do truly believe that this will come out soon, if not in the next two years, just on the basis that a lot of people are getting tired of the same old castle theme being re-hashed, and wanting to see something new :classic: Also another reason is the rapidly increasing interest in that period of history, such as movies like 300, Sparticus, and others, so I think this theme could easily hit shelves by 2013.

I agree with you that general interest in this era has been/ will be increased, especially with the movies Eagle of the Ninth and Centurion coming out in the near future. I guess we can just hope that LEGO picks up on this.

But those aren't really kids' movies, are they? Why would TLG be inspired by movies geared towards adults in any way?

The theme needs to be popular among kids (and suitable for them) to make TLG even consider creating a line from it. That's why we don't have Twilight- or James Bond-sets, despite how popular those movies are.

so I guess the Agents line didn't exist? or the Vikings line didn't exist? or the Dino Attack line didn't exist?(Jurassic park not exactly a kiddie movie either), or lets look at the other lines shall we? your premise that Ancients would not be popular is faulty at best PlayMobile did a Roman and Egyptian theme sets and they were wildly popular.

furthermore your premise that the line must be popular amongst kids is also faulty since many lines LEGO did were very unpopular amongst kids and adults Gallidor comes to mind.

I could be wrong, of course, and trust me, I'd love to have a theme based on the Antiquity just as much as you, but I can't help but to be skeptic about this issue. I'll believe it when I see it, I guess.

By the way, none of the LEGO lines you mentioned were based on a license (not that I'm saying that the Antiquity theme should be, it would just help), and none of them were very popular. But I don't know about the PlayMobil themes, you could very well be right about them.

well know this Playmobil is LEGO's competitor not mega blocks or tyco or any of those, its playmobil they compete against since their lines are both designed for the same age groups, with LEGO going outside those age groups on some things.

I disagree... In my opinion Playmobil is for younger children maybe those between 3 and 10. LEGO covers the same age bracket of course but most its sales are on the themes aimed at children above this age bracket.

true but others have noticed a trend with LEGO and Playmobile, when Playmobile has a theme LEGO comes out with a similar theme like the vikings and so on, I wouldn't be surprised if we see Greeks, Romans and Egyptians in the next year or two, like I foresaw before coming out in 2011 and 2012, and wouldn't be surprised if series 3 collectible minifigs have elves in them either.

I don't think there will ever been an accurate historic theme but the idea of a greek mythology theme seems possible.

Theres to much restictions if they base their them on actual historic events but greek and roman tales of heroes give a fair bit of leeway for creativity.

thats what they did with the Viking line, but i'm thinking they may broaden their horizons to include Roman sets with Balistas and trebuchets and so on.

LEGO does seem to like making sets with large catapult-ish things in them.
