Brickdoctor Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 I had a quick question: Does the forum automatically update and then 'lock' a member's post count? Or does someone have the option of changing it? Because user 'Legonater' has a post count of -10. Is this an error? Also on the same subject, where can the 'Most Active in Sub-Forum' stat be found in the new forum profiles? Quote
Forresto Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 (edited) Legonator I was put in timeout (the reasons why are his own business and that of the moderator put him on it) and after coming back I belive had his post count subtracted. The moderators do that. As for posting nd getting put into a new group (corresponding to the amount of posts you have) the server/computer automaticlly does that for you. around 10 posts = Vassal 100 posts = Citizen (grants you the ability to PM I think) 600 posts = Knight (grants you the ability to poll) 1000 posts = count and these are the only ones I personally know. There is a page that has all this information but i'm not sure where it is. EDIT: Link here you go probably one of the most useful pages on this site. Edited July 18, 2010 by Forresto Quote

Actually, Knight rank is 500 posts, and that wasn't my question. The remaining question I had was where I could find the stat that lists what forum I'm most active in. Quote

The remaining question I had was where I could find the stat that lists what forum I'm most active in. Post count is accurate, trust me. Can an administrator alter it? Absolutely. Go to your profile and under your profile picture is all (most) of your stats. This feature was in your profile in the old version of the forum. In the forum upgrade thread, I have asked shadows to look into getting this feature back, as it is no longer available in our profiles. Quote
Professor Flitwick Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Post count is accurate, trust me. With Bonaparte's (Was it him? Or another member of the Admin?) being the only exception. He has a fixed post count, more than the entire forum, I believe! Quote
VBBN Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 With Bonaparte's (Was it him? Or another member of the Admin?) being the only exception. He has a fixed post count, more than the entire forum, I believe! That would be jipay's post count. Quote
Professor Flitwick Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 That would be jipay's post count. Ah yes, thank you. There so many people on these forums, especially over my three years, people just seem to merge into each other. Quote
Siegfried Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 The post count is not an absolute. Interestingly on this board it has an "Active Posts" section on profiles which I assume is a tally of all posts in the database. Mine, for example, is 500 more than my "Post" count. Explanation? Some forums (such as the chamber) don't add to the post count, which would explain my discrepancy. Also, we can change the post count to what ever we want, even if it's nonsense. On that subject, we do from time to time reduce peoples post count as an alternative to banning them. In regard to the "Most Active in xxxx", yes that was removed from the new board. Like a lot that's been removed, I'm not sure why. It could be easy to add back in, I'm not sure. But it's on the list. Quote

On that subject, we do from time to time reduce peoples post count as an alternative to banning them. Is that to force them into a lower rank (and thereby lower their privileges)? Quote
Siegfried Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Is that to force them into a lower rank (and thereby lower their privileges)? We have done this from time to time... but please don't take this statement and apply it to any particular member. There have been a few cases of requested demotions. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 Okay thanks, that answers the question. Quote
Big Cam Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 Sorry to post right after the question was answered but what reasons besides posting in the chamber would your active posts be different from the posts displayed to the public when you post? I've never been to the chamber, yet 2 of my posts seem to not be active. Just curious. Quote

Shadows Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 Sorry to post right after the question was answered but what reasons besides posting in the chamber would your active posts be different from the posts displayed to the public when you post? *snip* 2 of my posts seem to not be active. Just curious. Just from memory, one of yours was a post you asked us to remove (I don't remember the specific topic, but it was announcing something new prematurely, I think). It's sitting in a dead posts forum that only the staff can see. If someone replies to a topic started by a spammer, the same thing will happen when the topic is moved out of sight. That's also why the staff counts are different from what you see, and why your count would appear different to any user who can't see the Academy, for example. Other potential reasons include a post that is completely deleted, a post that is merged artificially (hard to explain) or simply ghosts. I've never been to the chamber Yet... Quote
Rick Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 That's also why the staff counts are different from what you see, and why your count would appear different to any user who can't see the Academy, for example. Doesn't seem to be the case. I can't see the RA, but still I see Big Cam's post count as 6,131 next to his posts and 6,129 on his profile page. Of course I can't see all of Big Cam's 6,129 active posts, because I can't view RA posts. But ranks are still based on the 'Post' count to the left of forum posts, right? (So all the posts you ever made, irrespective of whether they were deleted.) Just 1,869 posts to go until we have EB's first ever Arch Duke! btw: Weird, I'm not 'missing' any posts by the above logic, even though I recall replying in threads that were later deleted/hidden. B.C. Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 (edited) Also, we can change the post count to what ever we want, even if it's nonsense. So, theoretically speaking of course, if I were feeling inadequate because of my low post count an admin could increase the number posts without me polluting every thread I see with a pointless post? (Kinda like this post/thread) Edited July 22, 2010 by B.C. Quote
Siegfried Posted July 22, 2010 Posted July 22, 2010 To re-explain what Shadows has said; Reasons why you'd have a post count greater than the number of posts; 1. Auto merged posts. If you make two quick posts in the same topic with no post in between the board will auto-merge these mosts. Thus you're recorded to have made two posts but only one is in the database. 2. Staff editing. Sometimes we've upped someone's post count to let them send PMs for example. 3. Deleted posts. We don't delete many posts, so this is a rarity. Reasons why you'd have a post count smaller than the number of posts; 1. Posting in a non-tallied forum. Such as the chamber. 2. Staff editing. Generally punishment, but not always. I'll look into this and see if there are any other reasons. Just 1,869 posts to go until we have EB's first ever Arch Duke! I better make a new rank then! So, theoretically speaking of course, if I were feeling inadequate because of my low post count an admin could increase the number posts without me polluting every thread I see with a pointless post? Sure they could, but they wouldn't. Quote

It's going to take some time, I've slowed way down in the posting category. I'd watch out for the lightningtiger, he trumps me in daily posting. I could also see prateek passing me. They are just ranks anyway. OK, no more off topic Quote

-JD- Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Earlier today I checked how many posts I'd made today. It was 11. Now it's 7. Any reason? Quote
Inconspicuous Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Earlier today I checked how many posts I'd made today. It was 11. Now it's 7. Any reason? I've noticed something like this happening. I'm pretty sure by "today" it means the last 24 hours. I've checked my daily post count and seen it much higher than it actually was that day- over time it evened out. So as hours pass, posts more than 24 hours before the current time disappear, at least I think. I hope that answered your question. Quote
Stash2Sixx Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 I'm sorry, but I gotta ask...What does it matter how many posts you have? Quote
Captain Zuloo Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 I'm sorry, but I gotta ask...What does it matter how many posts you have? Agreed - it seems though when reading the EB ranks thread that post counts are a status symbol. Perhaps this could be ammended so as not to provoke members to post for the sake of posting? Quote
Milan Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 Posts are not very important, indeed. But I would't like to have a forum where there is no post count at all. Quote
