Actually, with the new blue STAPs the stabilizer fins are quite large, though not as huge as Lego made them. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to make them in the right size so I think a little too big will just have to be passable.

But LEGO's already made STAPs that are much closer to the right size than these new ones. With all their fancy new molding power I'm sure LEGO could make some new parts which would allow them to retain the size while increasing detail. And it probably wouldn't be any more costly than the BARF trooper's amazing new helmet.

And I don't think the fins are any larger on the blue models than they are on the brown models. (They shouldn't be, since they are the same vehicle.) Those flag pieces really aren't necessary.

And DarthR2-D2 what do you mean by "the astro droid the JSF"? If you're referring to the astro-droid in the Jedi starfighter it's an R2 unit which for some reason is labeled as an R8 unit. R8-series droids actually look like this.

If LEGO's taking stuff from Hasbro, surely Saesee's fighter will look like this (since there was a Hasbro toy that could do this).

I'm looking forward to this set anyways, a cheap way to get a Mace for some, but I can't wait for the Tactical Droid and R8 is just a bonus!:classic:

Yeah, there is, with SNOT. A 1 x 3 plate and two cheese wedges later, you've got accurately wide 'wings'. They're too thick, though.

R8-B7-Mace's astromech

Someone needs to show me how to do spoiler

Find it under the drop-down menu for 'Other styles' if you don't want to type it.

Well, they have to go with what Lucas Animation does, and since Anakin didn't get back the Azure Angel, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't give Saesee a Delta 7-B. But I could be wrong.

I suppose so. And besides, it's not like they care about the number of retcons they've made at this point...

Excellent new pictures

I can understand why everyone hates Mace Windu's JSF as it is quite plain looking with not much colour to it. The Tactical Droid is very brilliant. The Speeder he rides looks decent enough but R8 has to be the star of that set. It seems these days Lego works much harder on the Astromechs

As for the Battle For Geonosis Luminara is excellent  Especially with a two-sided head. Rex is good though I already have him so I will only use the newer Rex for Minifigure customizing. The Proton Cannon is amazing. As someone pointed out before its a Flak Cannon on legs and it gets used by the CIS more because Flak Cannons can only stay on the Separatist ship.

What I don't understand is some people criticizing the BARC Speeders. I reckon they look much better compared to the old one in the 2007 Battle Pack and the fact we are getting two different coloured BARC's in January (Green in the Clone Battle Pack and red in the Battle For Greonosis) makes me more excited for the BARC's than I was before :classic:

EDIT: From the Out of box image the Tactical Droid represents either of these two Droids

Agreed on all points. JSF design seems to have gone downhill since 7143 set the basic framework in place, and even that one wasn't really that accurate.

I seriously doubt Saesee will get his old JSF back for CW- especially after the timeline was ruined and Anakin flies neither the Eta-2 nor Azure Angel.

I'm tempted by the astromechs as well, they're one of the few CW minifigs that don't look bad. The problem is the sets they come in.

I thought some of the Clone Wars bashing may have stopped a little, after the huge discussion in the last thread, but I guess not.

So just to through it out there again.. the timeline hasn't been "ruined" or "retconned" everything you guys are talking about is part of the EU and not official canon. Unless it's adopted into the official lore.. like what we've seen with characters like Quinlan Vos, it should be considered nothing more than a "what if" scenario. Again, much of the EU is written by hack writers with zero talent.. You can't expect them to acknowledge every little thing that may have been good and ignore the reams and reams that's considered bad.

As for these starfighters.. I don't mind them too much, they're pretty basic sets that are clearly meant more for the younger crowd, and I think they're good in that respect. They're swooshable little ships that come with fairly good minifigs and again, I'd blame the source material on this one, as Mace just had a very boringly designed ship. Kit Fisto's may have been a better choice but it would have been a third red one. I hope we see the Eta-2's introduced in the Clone Wars shortly as they're just overall more interesting ships.

I still don't like the JSF (hate hate) but only because its another one, not because of the build. The astromec, tactical droid, and new pilot are good, as are the new Jedi (however much I dislike characters, the Jedi are good for their own Jedi army [and sigs])

On the STAP point the origional lego stap is the best (the one from 7121 - Naboo Swamp) the others are too big.

I think we're all blaming the source materiel on this one. It's not LEGO's fault that Lucas Animation decided to create such a bland starfighter. In fact, you could blame the source materiel for the bad designs of all the CW JSFs, 'cause considering that the show begins with Anakin already a Knight, everyone should be flying Eta-2s.

Not bashing here... I'm just stating the facts. I even said I liked the triangular design of the Delta-7!

Wookieepedia says:

The Expanded Universe (or EU for short) encompasses every one of the officially licensed, fictional background of the Star Wars universe, outside of the six Star Wars films produced by George Lucas. It is derived from and includes most official Star Wars-related books, comic books, video games, spin-off films, television series, toys, and other media. This material expands and continues the stories told in the films, taking place anywhere from over 5,000 years before The Phantom Menace to 133 years after Return of the Jedi. For the most part, the Expanded Universe is considered canonical by Lucasfilm Ltd.—though subordinate to film canon. However, the issue is one of the most hotly debated topics among fans.

Expanded Universe lit is and always has been part of the official canon. It's a lot more than "what if". That would be the Star Wars Infinities comic book seires, which truly are "what if" scenarios and not considered canon. Why does no one acknowledge this?

I suppose if you consider the portion of the Expanded Universe that the Prequels contradicted to be apocryphal, your argument would be correct. But the Expanded Universe came before the Prequels. Even the first film could be considered to contain retcons if you're basing the argument off of the original novelization.

And as for the BARC speeders, I'm just annoyed because they're too darn BIG.

All the prequels are retcons.

Basically Lucas went back and retold the story to suit his fancy regardless of what the novels said. That could be attributed to a constantly changing storyline within one person's mind, though. I remember reading that originally, at one point (after AnH was made), the plan for the saga was that Leia is not Luke's sister, Vader is not Luke's father, Vader killed Luke's father, Luke has a sister who isn't Leia that appeared in Ep. 8, and the Emperor doesn't make an appearance until Ep. 9.

On-topic: They're also ugly and have the wrong shapes in the wrong places.

Yep, Lucas has changed his mind constantly about his "vision" for everything. He went in to the Prequel trilogy with only a general idea of how it would start and end and just filled in the gaps along the way.

As much as Lucas denies it, he has said in the past that Star Wars would have 9 episodes. It still might, especially since Lucas has been buying up rights to dead actors. When the technology is good enough, we might be seeing familiar actors on the big screen for 7-9 at their appropriate ages.

I really don't think it's the color of the fighter that disappoints so much as the actual shape. From what I can see LEGO refuses to make any efforts toward replicating the streamlined look of the real Delta-7; there may be some non-Clone Wars fans who don't like the triangular design but I prefer it to this craptastic attempt at a triangle that LEGO has maintained since Anakin's fighter in '08. Why is everyone complaining about the color? The color does not affect the look at all! All of these Delta-7Bs have almost exactly the same shape; I really don't think making it green, purple, or some other color would improve the look. It's really LEGO's poor design and subsequent lack of improvement that fails.

Nope, better colours definitely would.

Sure, there's not a lot of detailed printing or even stickers, and the overall shape is still bad, but the colour is definitely my main complaint. Even if starfighters are released with the same shape, it's an opportunity to get missed or new Jedi, new Astromech droids, and more colourful starfighters if you have a collection. I missed getting that shuttle with Mace Windu in it, and I would have bought it. However, this is a cheaper alternative with good minifigs and another starfighter for my other two, however bland it is.

While I'm on that topic, how likely is it that Anakin and Obi Wan's starfighters are remade? I missed both, and it's been a while since they've been out. Hopefully it's a possibility next year, though I know most people will complain once they see the bad shape returning.

To be honest lego has disappointed everyone with their smaller sets,to make this BARC thinner, and more accurate, it would use less pieces, and then leave more room for price reduction/ Add-ons. I'm gonna MOD it the second I get it. I wish that the BP vehicles were better, for example, the rebel BP could have come with a dish turret instead of some speeder thing. The BARC is just all wrong, and it would cheaper for lego to make it accurate :sceptic:

I can infer from your signature that you are primarily a minifigure collector, so I can see where your argument is coming from. But I would have to disagree. For me, the vehicle or starship is what really makes a set. Not only is it more durable and playable (read: easily modified) than the minifigure, but it's most of what you actually pay money for. In most cases, a minifigure from a set on bricklink is much cheaper than the same set without minifigures. I suppose that this new set would have appeal to minifigure collectors such as yourself, but the poorly designed ship makes this set a disappointment. Even if this ship were chrome silver and came with the entire Jedi Council I would pass this set because that design is just so terrible.

I would agree with you on that point, though I think that the ice cutter in the Hoth trooper battlepack is more of a counterexample, as it actually represents something from the films. (Still, an Atgar cannon or an anti-infantry battery would also have been nice.) The battlepacks really are a great opportunity for LEGO to rethink their small vehicles, like their BARC speeders and 74-Z speeder bikes; I wish they would take advantage of it. The BARC speeder really needs a smaller, sleeker redesign.

I get your point. Currently I get any Star Wars set in my price range, even if I don't particularly like the vehicle itself. It's not always for minifigures, though I do like my extensive amount of them.

Still, I don't think the design can be improved without a complete redesign. For the shape and Astromech's placement to be closer to the actual thing, it would have to be larger. The back would probably also need to be reworked, with maybe a new cockpit piece and a new fin piece. To have an accurate design, they would basically need to replicate the UCS starfighter released this year in smaller scale. I don't think all these changes will be very likely in the near future, and personally the only things that bother me is the Astromech placement and the cockpit.

Maybe I've got low standards.

Agreed. I'm sure there's a good reason, though, and my best guess is the ever-present structural standards.

personally the only things that bother me is the Astromech placement and the cockpit.

Hey, me too! I think the Astromech should be pushed to the side and back, and the cockpit should get a clear line of sight by chopping out the middle and tips of the wings and then turning the cockpit transparent. That's what CW should've had in the first place- also known as the Eta-2.

Posted

It's possible that structure is the main factor, and that may explain the need for is to be 2 studs wide, but then again lego has access to every piece to design their sets, plus new pieces. I hope future sets will address this problem  .

Well of course it needs a complete redesign! It wouldn't necessarily have to be larger though. And even if it is, you can't see the pilot inside the fighter clearly so I don't think I'd mind too much.

Either your standards are too low or mine are too high...

Yep. Originally, the lightsaber was for everyone, and during the concept stages of AnH, it was changed to an exclusive weapon for the heroes and villains.

But just think- even if you didn't have the previous ones, if TLG made changes, this your first one could be that much better; not just any collector's piece but one to be proud of.

I think the tactical droid is supposed to represent the one from Ryloth of all places.

Hmm, was the JSF there? I know Mace was, but I don't remember if his fighter came along.
