Destroydacre Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 The advent calender is extremely disappointing. Not only are the ships poorly made, but only 5 figs? And most of them are CW at that. Will it even have 100 pieces? I'll pass. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Don't know if i can post that, if no, sorry to mod and forum. but that is a Star Wars Advant calendar no? [snip] Yeah, we saw it already. It's a page or so back. Who else want's a new Yoda Hut? We've gotten one before, and we have a separate thread for wishes. Quote
WhiteFang Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I am not sure why some of you are feeling disappointed with this advent selection. True enough, those super minis may look simple but in its simplicity, you are able to use it to display in LEGO modular Toy Shops to showcase these iconic SW creations. In addition, the advent surprise is not the end. Do you think whatever you see on the box art reflects the entire content? I don't think so. There should be more of it with the exception of the minifigures. I find it a little disappointing to find only 4 + 1 exclusive minifigure. Other than that, this should be in your buying list. How many times do you ever think that you will actually see a Star Wars advent calendar. Quote
prateek Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I'm sure there are way more models than just this. 7 models + 8-9 (according to Brickset (I think)) < 24 days of content. Quote
RileyC Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 For SW collectors this advent calendar is definitely a must-have, but for selective buyers like me I might just have to pass on this one. The only element that interests me on this one is Santa Yoda, the rest are easily-obtainable minifigs and mini/micro models that you could always make with spare parts. Yeah I agree with KDM. Yeah Santa Yoda is really cool and Im sure it will be sort after in a few years by keen collectors, but I dont think its worth it honestly. The ships are just look like someone was given some off cuts and told to make a ship while not cohering to size and proportions. Lego really needs to hire Legostein as their minis maker But as with the other Advent calenders, after Christmas they seem to stick around and get discounted. Hopefully it happens to this one. Heyy! I just realized, that Nute Gunray's hat is printed now His hat has always beem like that. The pattern is in a different texture than the hat meaning it gives off a different reflection of colour. Quote
Ceroknight Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) yoda claus eh?hmmm I would have preferred someone else... Oh well, I hope some of the colours on the micro ships change though Edited February 10, 2011 by ceroknight Quote
Erynion Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 OMG! Those little advent calendar ships look so cute, I want them, even though I'm not an SW fan. On a similar note, I do love Ewoks, and my Forestmen would love that tree stump... Quote

How many times do you ever think that you will actually see a Star Wars advent calendar. There are few people that would buy something they didn't like just because it had the Star Wars label on it. I actually can't get over how bad it is according to the box art. I mean, just look at this! Is that the Millennium Falcon? I mean, maybe if a 3 year-old designed it, but there are supposed to be great designers working at TLG! That's the best they could come with? And then the minifig list...the only slightly rare characters are Nute Gunray, which I could argue is the least appealing character in Star Wars, and Santa Yoda, which can be recreated provided you have a CW Yoda and purchase any future Christmas themed sets. And they didn't even bother to give Chewie the right bowcaster. It's like TLG just mailed in it on this. "Hey, people will buy this regardless of the set quality, so let's just put no effort into these mini models and keep the piece count ridiculously low for mass profit. Ooh, and let's throw in mini figs that nobody really needs to make sure it doesn't hurt sales of any other sets. Oh, and let's give Yoda a Santa torso to make sure all the 'gotta catch 'em all' collectors buy it." Edited February 10, 2011 by StoutFiles Quote
Delta 38 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Um... Well, this is relatively disappointing, I guess. The new Santa torso is nice, and I haven't actually gotten a Yoda yet (though I'm almost certainly going to if I get the frigate). I guess they're kind of rubbing in the fact that I don't have one. That said, I still will get it, if possible. There's a Clone Pilot, as well as other minifigs useful for building armies (like the terrifying army of Nute Gunrays!), so I may as well. I'm sure there are a few more minifigs in there anyway. Quote
Ceroknight Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 so this is where they got the idea... Quote
WhiteFang Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Is that the Millennium Falcon? I mean, maybe if a 3 year-old designed it, but there are supposed to be great designers working at TLG! That's the best they could come with? Agreed that the Millennium Falcon looks very simple based on the designer's built. However, please also note that this is an advent calendar, which meant this Millennium Falcon parts cannot exceed "X" amount of quantity. To give it the most realistic and restrictions imposed, I supposed that is why it looks simple. This is not the regular Star Wars minis that we usually get in polybags. In most cases, most of the parts for each small advent packet comes in less than 15 piece counts. To me, I think that is quite a challenge. It's like TLG just mailed in it on this. "Hey, people will buy this regardless of the set quality, so let's just put no effort into these mini models and keep the piece count ridiculously low for mass profit. I beg to differ. There is piece count restrictions for each advent calendar packets. Be it City, Castle, Pirates or even Star Wars, it follows the same rules. When you open a packet, it supposes to represent something meaningful on its own! Quote
CommanderFox Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Thanks so much for showing the pic of the calendar nrg! It looks pretty good! Lego are into micro models obviously. The Yoda fig is cool, apart from him I have the rest, but will definitely get it for the micro's! CF Quote
Oddibossity Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) Wow! Some surprises, but the bigger sets are still too $-y for my wallet at present but I am perfectly happy with the smaller sets. Nightspeeder is great- much better than prelims now with the decals and figs but seemingly terminally un-swooshable. I am now DESPARATE for pics of the geonosian starfighter as I am sure it will be FAB! Edited February 10, 2011 by Oddibossity Quote
AndyC Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 By the way, is there anything unique about Santa Yoda that won't be replicated on future winter themed sets? Santa will take this body and backpack... and short red legs are obtainable. The figure is unique now but it will be easily recreated in the future. There appears to be a small bit of his neck visible in green at the top of his suit, which would obviously be yellow if the torso were ever to be used on a normal santa minifig. Quote
drdavewatford Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Some of the complaints about the minis in the SW advent calendar are frankly idiotic - guys, it's an advent calendar ! Of course the minis are 'half hearted' and only have a few pieces. How else would all the pieces fit in the slots in the calendar ?! The models could never be anything but tiny within the limitations of the total piece count. I personally think LEGO are really brave releasing this, as the complaints from the rabid SW fansboys who just don't seem to get the point of this being an advent calendar are likely to be loud and constant. Still, the enormous amounts of cash that LEGO will rake in will I'm sure make up for it.... Dr. D. Quote
Oky Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) There appears to be a small bit of his neck visible in green at the top of his suit, which would obviously be yellow if the torso were ever to be used on a normal santa minifig. Not necessarily. The beard of a normal Santa would cover that part up, and then there's always the undershirt excuse. And by the way, he looks more like the Grinch to me. OK, so let's summarize: There are rumored to be 8 minifigs, and six of them are known. We also know that there are seven mini-models, so that means that there are still two unknown minifigs (although we know that they aren't new) and at least seven other models. I think the TIE might be packaged together with another model since it's so small, possibly the Falcon. Speaking of which, I really hope the radar dish on the Falcon will be the printed one from the keychain. That would make the model look much better. In fact, I agree with others here that all of the models would really benefit from stickers, but they aren't necessary IMO. Edited February 10, 2011 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote
Blondie-Wan Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) I think the calendar is fairly adorable. For those complaining about the mini models, I don't know what you were expecting; each day's build in an advent calendar is typically just a few pieces. Anyone who expected anything more was being unrealistic. In particular I think those saying TLG didn't have to try hard are really missing the boat. If anything, I think the designers had to try harder to make recognizable versions of the ships using so few pieces; that's tougher than simply throwing a high piece count at it, and these mini models show a lot of creativity. That said, the thing that would probably keep me from getting one of these is its emphasis on the prequel / Clone Wars era. I'd love an all-OT advent calendar, but obviously if there's going to be just one, it's going to represent everything, with a heavy emphasis on the CW. Can you do a significantly better Millennium Falcon with a similar number of pieces? Edited February 10, 2011 by Blondie-Wan Quote
Kettchy Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) Good grief, advent calendar haters. Who do you think it was designed for? Grumpy old men with a stick up their trash compactor about accuracy and price-per-piece, or children that might actually use it as an advent calendar and have some fun, rather than open everything at once and put it in a box for display/storage? It was never going to be a parts pack, and it was certainly never going to have a full-fledged mini model behind every door. Splitting the models would be a massive failure - what kid wants half a B-wing in his calendar one morning? Edited February 10, 2011 by Kettchy Quote
Praiter Yed Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 IMO it would be foolish for any Lego Star Wars fan not to buy this, whether they like it or not. Surely this has got to become a collectors item. I'll probably get 2 for the kids and one for me to keep in pristine condition and occasionally stare at. Quote
TheBrickHitHouse Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 People do love 10 bricks combined to look like a star wars vehicle and lacking any sort of function what so ever... Quote
Mr. Elijah Timms Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 IMO it would be foolish for any Lego Star Wars fan not to buy this, whether they like it or not. Speak for yourself, Yed. That's $35USD that could, imho, just be better spent elsewhere. Now, if they'd included some new and exclusive OT minifig, that's another story. Santa Yoda is cute and all, but not necessary. Nothing against anyone who loves it, but this is easy for me to turn down. Quote
IAmWillGibson Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) I myself am really into the Advent Calendar. I don't get many SW sets, so the minifigures shown are all pretty new to me, and Santa Yoda is the best thing ever, possibly. I'm also really a fan of micro-sets, perhaps inexplicably. So yeah, I'll have to make the call this October as to how to get this. If I see it in major stores, I'll be happy to snap it up. But will it be like the Castle/Pirate calenders, which I've never seen in TRUs or Walmarts? At least by then the Toronto LEGO Store will be open, so I have time to plan. Although I only buy the ocasional SW set(maybe 1 or two from each wave), I was looking forward to seeing what LEGO would include in the SW calendar. I can honestly say that after looking at it for just a few seconds, its going to be an easy 'pass' for me. I was hoping for some new figs, accessories etc. Apart from the novelty value of the 'santa yoda' I don't see anything here that would make me want to spend any money on this set. Quote

For a few years now TLG has typically done a couple advent calendars a year, one from City and one from one other current theme. Until last year the City one was always available in the US (or more generally North America) while the other was not, but last year the Kingdoms calendar was released here alongside the City one. It seems to me deeply unlikely a Star Wars advent calendar would be released elsewhere and not in North America, so I don't think those of us here who want it really need to worry, but if it is a concern it might be a good idea to contact TLG and let them know plenty of Canadian and US fans want it as well. North America, bring the biggest LEGO SW customer base, this will probably be the first continent the calendar will be released in. I can remember a few SW sets only being sold in the US, and not the other way round. Quote
