Delta 38 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I just noticed something! The new Clones from the Frigate don't have the smaller visor print, like the Clones in the battlepack. That's a little odd, because I kind of prefer the smaller visor, and I expected it to replace the longer one. Also, I had hoped that Obi-Wan would have hair, or possibly a new hair mould. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Quote
Stardusty Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I don't know does anyone has new MF, but KOCKICE forum member SMEH from Bosnia has it. I didn't noticed any reviews on the Internet, so here are two pictures he took. (he didn't make a review, jsut took those pictures, or at least used them in his post) Quote
DarthR2-D2 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Can somebody who has both the 4504 Millennium Falcon (2004) and the 2011 Millennium Falcon do a size-by-side? Quote
StoutFiles Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Ugh, I cringe everytime I see that Falcon. Since I have to buy the stupid overpriced thing, I'll wait for both a sale and for a decent MOD to come out for it. To the person who broke the Echo Base story, are the missiles inside the base or is part of the base supposed to be outside? Quote
Stegoceras Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Thanks for the photos Stardusty Are those stickers I see? Seems like the rightmost of the ones on the 4 round tiles in front is already peeling off. Hope I'm wrong. Quote
Ogre Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) So I guess we'll have to wait on the Hoth Ion Cannon and Power Generator sets... Oh well, This sounds good too. I love Hoth, I'll buy anything Hoth. You too, huh? I'm kind of like Pavlov's dog...mention "new Hoth LEGO set" and I start to drool. And what's with the Falcon? It just looks...wrong. Can't put my finger on it (I'm no SW ship wiz) but, it just looks 'off'. Edited May 23, 2011 by Ogre Quote
Clone OPatra Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Are those stickers I see? Sure looks like it. But at this point, who's surprised? Star Wars is a theme that is going to use stickers whenever it can, for whatever reason. It's odd, but it seems only the current Disney themes (Cars and PotC) are getting an abundance of printed parts. Quote

Blackknight112 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I must say the mf look really weird. Something aboat the size is wrong,I guess? Quote
The Legonater Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I must say the mf look really weird. Something aboat the size is wrong,I guess? If I had to guess, it's the mandibles. To me, everything else looks fine, but the mandibles just seem too long and skinny. I'm sure fallenangel or the Doc could clarify this, though. Quote

I'm sure fallenangel or the Doc could clarify this, though. While not being adressed, i can just agree. The mandibles are too long and thin (both broadth and hight). The ahllway to the cockpit also does not fit to the cockpit very well, either. This being said, i still like the design. It's a good depiction for a system set this size. And damn, it's a LEGO Falcon anyway. Just look ahere: Falcon model above Tatooine To me, this beauty has been modelled well by TLG. Quite a few nice details and custom colored parts for flavor. I had the box in hands today (@149.99 €). Felt like a kid and had to struggle down the urgency to buy it right away. Really looking forward to a sale offering it at a 10 bricks per buck ratio. If i can hold myself back for long enough, that is. Quote

I'm sure fallenangel or the Doc could clarify this, though. I concur. The mandibles look awful. In addition to the long and skinny-ness, they're short so the angles don't match up well with the top plating of the ship and they're all gappy around the edges. of the connection. Quote

Looks very out of scale to the rest of the ship. Yes, you're right. But i like it that way - we got a cockppit to fit two minifigs in. It would have been much worse if the cockpit were slimmer but we would not see the reason for Han to have a (well... hairy... ) companion. Two figs inside is a must, IMO. Quote
Ceroknight Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Weird, there is a bit of yellow just behind the cockpit but not on the box... It looks decent enough for people to buy it, but to me it just looks tiny.... Quote

And, strangely, I actually feel BETTER about the set, now that I finally figured out what was bothering me about it. I already have two Falcons (original and 10179) but, I'll probably snag this one if there's a decent sale/coupon/whatever. Quote
will Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 The cockpit on the falcon is too big but it needs to be to fit the minigfigs in. The position is wrong though, it's too far forward. The mandibles also look on the skinny side. It's the only set I want really, but I may have to wait for the price to come down, and for someone to do a decent mod. Quote

Though looking closer, these problems are also present in 4504. I fear TLG has decided this is the best basic design for the MF, much like the N-1, T-47, and T-65. Quote
Fallenangel Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 If I had to guess, it's the mandibles. To me, everything else looks fine, but the mandibles just seem too long and skinny. I'm sure fallenangel or the Doc could clarify this, though. That I can. But Flynn of FBTB has already covered the major issues in great detail: After looking closely at the new Falcon, I'd say the cockpit in sits quiet accurately in respect to the rest of the ship. Much unlike the first Falcon or the midi-scale, which are just ridiculous by today's standards. I'd call it's placement an improvement over the previous iterations. The only problem I'm seeing is it's overly large to accommodate figures. I think the best way to illustrate my point is through pictorial comparisons. So, let's pull up a picture of the new Falcon: And for a comparison, here's the Flail-modified 4504, which positions the cockpit correctly: Now, unlike the original 4504, the new Falcon does integrate the cockpit with the rest of the ship quite well, rather than having it stick out like an afterthought as in 4504. Still, if you compare the two pics, it just isn't far back enough- it still juts out to the mandibles, which is just should not do. The problem is that the cockpit is connected to the rest of the ship at the wrong angle- if you look at the modded 4504, it's not nearly as exaggerated as the last two Falcons make it out to be. Incidentally, it's funny that you should mention the first Falcon, because if you look in this pic, it appears that the 7190 cockpit, despite being poorly integrated with the rest of the ship, is the only system-scaled cockpit to be positioned correctly with the rest of the ship. I agree with the mandibles, though. They look awkward, but they are also proportioned better than the last Falcon, where they were rather stubby. If anything, they need to be thicker, about a stud or so. I think my main problem with the mandibles is how poorly integrated they are with the rest of the ship- the cockpit suffers from the same problem. Again, take a look at the modded 4504, and compare it to the new Falcon. The modded set looks like one piece. The cockpit and mandibles are cleanly integrated with the hull of the ship, leaving only small gaps, and overall looking like a singular ship. The new one, on the other hand, looks disjointed and disconnected. The mandibles don't flow at all with the rest of the ship, the cockpit is too big and sticks out, and there are huge gaps all over the front. It doesn't feel like one piece, it feels like a circular hull that had the cockpit and mandibles just glued on as an afterthought. It's a horrible design, and in some ways is even a step down from the original 4504. And the mandibles themselves aren't that fantastic, either. For no apparent reason, they went back to the printed 2 x 2 tiles from 7190 instead of the 3 x 3 dishes of 4504. Additionally, they're positioned too far back on the mandibles themselves, making the whole thing look disproportionate and under-detailed. Also, this may only be my imagination, but I still feel that gap in between the mandibles is way too big. It's something that even Flail didn't look to modify, and I wonder why- it seems clear that the gap should be four studs wide instead of the usual six, and a simple thickening of the mandibles solves that problem and makes the mandibles much more well-proportioned. The interior. Well, it looks to have about the same amount of detail as the previous Falcons, done differently. I opened up my Falcons and I like the new interior much better than both of them. It has Han's workstation. It has the holochess board, with much better seating than last time. It has smuggling compartments (which 7190 has). It has a hyperdrive, of course, I'm only interpreting those things in the rear as a hyperdrive, but since they aren't labeled I'm left completely lost and confused (no, not really). And, finally it has beds. Beds! What else could practically be added? To answer your question: Okay, okay, so I'm not expecting LEGO to all of a sudden put that sort of detail into the interior- while doing so would result in an awesome Falcon, it would come at the expense of an increase in the already-inflated price. Still, though, it annoys me that we're at the third version of a System-scaled Falcon, and this is the interior we get. It's not an absolutely awful interior, admittedly, and it does come with its perks- Han's console is very well designed, the Dejarik board and seats are, as you pointed out, much improved over 4504, and we do finally get honest-to-goodness smuggling compartments, a belly gunner, and beds to boot. So, yeah, we get some nice things. The problem is that overall this feels like we're only halfway through the instruction manual. It doesn't feel complete- there are huge, empty spaces in between all the rooms, the floor is just plates (Even 4504 had the big grill pieces for detail), and what we do get just feels like they were put in as an afterthought. The seating is just brown chairs placed around the same old chess board, the hyperdrive is an absolute travesty, and the beds aren't really anything to scream about, design-wise. It feels as if all the design of the interior went into the gunner stations, with the rest of it being thrown in at the last second. 4504 and 7190 may not have had the best interiors either, but theirs actually felt like care and thought was put into the interiors- the back half of 4504 is, I think, extremely well designed, especially the hyperdrive. The new interior just feels rushed, incomplete, and definitely should not be what we get in a 140 dollar set. Now, the bottom. I get nervous every time I pick up the 4504 Falcon. It feels unstable. I would rather have a structure that holds the set together before I get all the fancy details. The big problem with the new Falcon is it has that structure. It looks like a toy that I can swoosh around without worry. The problem is that structure eats into the piece count. By the time it's stable, there's only so much left for detail and covering up that horrid frame. The more pieces they add the higher the price. It's already $140. I can't vouch for 4504 as I've only built the Flail'd version (Which fixes the structural problems), but I do know that 7190 is quite stable, and while the underside of the ship is not perfect, it is a good deal better than the technic mess of the new version. I definitely see what you mean about the piece count and price, but looking over the pictures, it seems like they could have at least slapped on a few plates to cover it up and still stay at the already-high price point. In addition to the cockpit and the mandibles (the two most noticeable issues) I can add a few more: - The docking pods should be taller than the 'rounded' portions of the ship (as seen here), e. g. the "tongue" in the front is too tall - There is no attempt to accurately represent the Falcon's true color scheme at all (unlike 7778, which at least tried) - If you ask me, there is way too much space around the quadlasers turrets' side walls I would have to agree with Brickdoctor here. 7778 was better... StoutFiles Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Why do you have to? I need every ship from the OT at the System scale. If given a mod similar to the one done for 4504, it can look decent. This ship will never look great at System scale because of the cockpit size, but decent is acceptable. Quote
