Problems with the mandibles and cockpit are just laziness, they could make it accurate without altering piece count or playability. I'd love to ask the designers why they design sets the way they do sometimes.

Agreed. The answer I like to use is that most kids wouldn’t notice (not being familiar with ships like the Falcon in the first place).

The only Falcons I have are the midi and the UCS. Do those "flaps" for access to the interior really hold up to swooshing? I would think in time they would become loose anyway. Not that I swoosh.... um, my kids do.

Seeing as 4504 seems more like a “playset” Falcon than a “swooshing” Falcon, I wouldn’t expect it to. 7778 was great for swooshing, though.

Well first of all, I apologize if I offended you with my post. I agree with you that the aesthetics of the ship itself are off. We should definitely talk about proportions and things that are right and wrong with the upcoming sets. I just don't like seeing a lot of hate. I much prefer happy times.

Hate is such a strong word... I prefer ‘criticism’. Of course, criticism can become negative and/or border on nitpicking, but the mandibles and the cockpit are hardly something that anyone adequately familiar with the Falcon wouldn’t notice right off the bat.

I'm not too keen on any of 4504, 7190, 10179, or 7965. The Falcon is a hard ship to get right and non of TLC attempts have been that close (maybe 10179 but that had no canopy), dull fig selection as well.

Considering the accuracy of The LEGO Group’s UCS sets prior to 10179 I would say that it was the best rendition of the Falcon they had released – at least, far better than 7190 and 4504 in terms of getting the feel of the ship.

But it seems that some models may inspire them...

Indeed, they have.

Xerxes Fett refers to it as "pulling a LEGO".

Too true. Little, simple choices like the use of a 2x4 wing plate can make all the difference.

Hmmm. Still gonna try to get this Falcon, although now that it's mentioned, its mandibles do look rather long and narrow. But I like blank interiors. More room for modding.

That's why I want it. That's one of the joys of LEGO!! :sweet:

You don't necessarily need excessively complicated building techniques to make a model accurate. Just a good understanding of what you're building.

I realize that; I just mentioned it because Ki-Adi Mundi specifically mentioned my own MOCs, and I make extensive use of illegal techniques. There are the builders like Anio who impose the same standards on their MOCs and get great results.

Very VERY true.

IMO, what is very interesting in building models the way set designer build their models is to find the find the easiest way to build something.

Optimizing things is a guarantee of simplicity and so, of efficience.

So yes, to achieve that, you have to understand what you build to find the best balance between overall design (how the set looks), accuracy (how the model is similar to what we can see in the movies), part number (and thus cost), and playability (is it fun to play with ?).

THAT's what I like when I build.

Sry, i didn't intend to offend you or any other MOCer. What do you mean by illegal techniques? Glueing stuff together?

BTW., just found this on the web. Might be removed soon since the blogger himself was. Just a mod/fake? At least i found that glimpse interesting.

Fairly certain that's a pic of Brickplumber's Hoth diorama.

EDIT: Yup, right here.

lego-star-wars-2011-hoth_1.jpg

This is definitely a MOC, there's far to much atchual building for it to be a set, and the medical droid is definitely hand made.

Edit: Brickdoctor beet me by seconds :sing:.

Meh!

Not really a fan of those YouTube reviews (or any video reviews).

I'll wait for a proper review to turn up here before I finally decide on like or no-like.

Same here. YouTube reviews usually end up being a kid with a really shaky camera. 'Course, since Mr Man has decided to be the guinea pig and go watch them, perhaps he could tell us if they're worth watching? :look: (aside from the German for those of us who don't speak it)

The second video is in English.

It's a good thing there are people who know how to do it right. :classic:

Eh, the reviews seem all right. You can't really be too excited for 7957. (Apparently, the middle thing comes off, which I guess is a decent play feature.) 7959 uses a lot of really big curved pieces, which (for me at least) don't tend to come in too handy, and I'm not too fond of the way the look either... on the other hand, the cockpit piece, as others have mentioned, would work well for the Delta-7.

As StoutFiles said, the second video is in English, but that doesn't make it worth watching.

I'd check the Imperiumdersteine reviews (that some members brought up earlier), since those are really quite good. Just popping them through Google translate lets English speakers get the gist of them; it worked for me.

I've read those. I was just wondering about the videos.

The first one has good video but is in German (Sith Nightspeeder)

Second one has bad video and sound but is in English (Geonosian Fighter)

My German is a little rusty, but I think he said "This thing looks worse in person than the pictures we've seen."

Ok, maybe that's not the translation, just my opinion.

I just don't think the speeder looks good in Lego. It's too spread out, or something. I can't put my finger on it. The curved pieces are nice, but I'm not sure they make the set worth getting.

All that being said, I'd like to see a Eurobricks review before I pass final judgement.

It's just a horrible speeder altogether, Lego or not. It'll sell though because of the minifigs.

How many reviews of the new sets are there on imperiumderstiene.com? I found the Republic Cruiser one, and it was pretty good. Odd that the hologram is of Darth Sidious, though... But anyway, does anyone think they could just put the links of the reviews on here all in one post?

Looks like the 7957 has two mini speeders detach. I intend to get this set - if it sucks I don't care, I'm after the figures anyway & it's not an expensive set. (As SW sets go.)
