prateek Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 There are many things to complain about, but is lack of Hoth Rebel troopers really one of them? Go get a battlepack! Sorry, but some people don't have access to a battle pack. Whether it be they spent all their money on the Hoth Base, or that they just couldn't find one. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Because it looks nothing like a proper shield generator? I was a huge EaW fan for a couple years, so I should've recognized it. The Empire always placed them on the important planets, and I always destroyed them with an advance force of twenty T-47s. But that's a discussion for another thread. The real winners are people who already have the 7666 Hoth Rebel Base, but lack an actual base/command center to put behind the wall/door. The Echo Base looks like a lot of fun. I agree. Unfortunately I'm not among those. Given how incomplete this set looks to me, this might be my first set mod in a while. Quote
TheDarkness Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I honestly do not know what to think of this set. It's all over the place, reminding me of the Home One set which I never liked. The minifigs are neat enough, but this set doesn't scream out "Buy Me" right now. I will wait until we see more pics before making a final judgment, but thus far I think it is underwhelming Quote
The Legonater Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Duh! Now why didn't I notice that? Because it looks nothing like a proper shield generator? Knowing that you've played Empire at War I was admittedly a bit surprised. Oh! Now I understand! Anyways, I definatly agree- doorway and the interior together will be pretty cool. Plus trenches up front. I was a huge EaW fan for a couple years, so I should've recognized it. The Empire always placed them on the important planets, and I always destroyed them with an advance force of twenty T-47s. But that's a discussion for another thread. Yeah, I see that now- didn't even think of EaW at the time Quote
sok117 Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 That's a shield generator. okay, the shield generator looks stupid IMO , I wasn't really asking what it was, just that it looked bad, I did see your earlier post that linked to a picture of it deploying a sheild, but I didn't think everyone would be able to know what I was talking about if I said shield generator This is a very interesting looking set. I am not really overjoyed with the figures they included. A rebel officer or two would have been nice. We already have enough Chewbacca's. The set itself looks kind of cool. Its definitely more of an extension of the previous Hoth set than anything else. It's interesting that Lego decided to make a set that by itself isn't super exciting. It's only really cool when combined with the 7666 Hoth Rebel Base. Usually Lego just rehashes old sets. I think it's a good idea to release sets in tandem, I just wish they were released a little closer together, if back in 2006 (?) they told me they would release an interior hoth set in 2011 that would look great with 7666, I would've wither told them they were mad, or I would've bought the set. But now it's to late unless I'm wiling to pay crazy ebay/bricklink prices There are many things to complain about, but is lack of Hoth Rebel troopers really one of them? Go get a battlepack! This didn't even dawn on me, the Hoth rebel battlepack is still widely available, 14 extra dollars to put a vehicle in your hanger and populate your rebel base, not a bad idea! Quote
Fatteh Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 As for the set, can't say I'm overly enthousiatic about it as of yet, Doesn't seem to carry that instantly recognizable as star wars feel (looks more like a new space police set). Guess I'll wait for the reviews, but very cool to finally see pictures of it. Thanks again Supersonic. Too true. Rebuild the SP3 police station, chuck in an Echo Base set and a few other bits and Shazaam! Poor man's Hoth Echo Base. Quote
pedro Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Er... a little underwhelming? There's so much about this set that doesn't make sense to me... I had to list 'em! Cons Medical bay, armoury and commoand centre all in one section? "Quit gargling kid, we're trying to plan here...!" Starfighter service gantry randomly stuck on top of said medicarmourommand centre. Why's it up there? Does this detach? Move? Confusing... Tiny Ion Cannon off to left side... surely they could have used the parts from generic dish/antennae array to make this better? In fact that could've been used for anything other than what it is? Random cannons on top of docking bays? Those are docking bays, right? (Oh, they might be stables.) No V-150 Ion Cannon (Unless that's what that is on the left side, hah!) No proper shield generator. Features content from the deleted scene with the C-3PO, the sign and the Wampa... but there's no Wampa. But hey, it isn't all bad! I thought I'd list the pluses too: Pros R-3PO. Nice. Will sit well with K-3PO. As ZO6 mentioned, this will probably work well with 7666. I'll likely heavily MOD/rebuild mine, if I buy it. Partially new Leia: hair/face. Great selection of parts. Hmmm... not so many pluses I guess. LEGO are very capable of producing awesome playsets. The original Cloud City is great. Battle of Endor is great. The bridge from Home One was like a slice out of the movie - superb. I liked 7666 Echo Base, despite many peoples reservations - everything that was included felt like it was taken from the movie. This feels thrown together, like an old Exploriens base or something (no offense Exploriens fans but this is supposed to be Star Wars!). Almost as if a designer dropped the original, super awesome Hoth base they built and then without reference material bobbled it back into this thing. Ach, I don't hate it. I'm just disappointed. Maybe as we see more photos and features it'll redeem itself. Not holding my breath though. Quote

I also notice that the speeder in this set appears to be the same design as the one in Ewok Attack. Hopefully this doesn't mean they've settled on that design, because I don't really like it. Quote
Parrothead Rasmus Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 (edited) Here we go! http://starwars.lego.com/de-DE/Products/7879.aspx Yay! Looks good, like the Home One set almost. I think it looks fairly good, and the minifigures are pure plastic perfection! And I'd kill to get another Taun Taun. There's also some room for customizing. Everything seems slightly bunched, but I'm sue it'll look good built and in front of me! This'll be a buy no matter what (though I am slightly pissed that there are no rebels )! sok117 Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I think I may appreciate this set more if I can see what it looks like closed up and a 360 view. Quote
legofett5 Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Hey guys, i'm new here but i love legos and star wars. I'm so excited for the new hoth set! Anyways this is a translation for the description: Get ready to attack! The imperial troops have discovered the secret Rebel base on the ice planet Hoth and prepare for battle. Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia stand ready to defend the base, while Luke Skywalker is in the Bacta tank handeled by its Medicine droid, 2-1B. Contains R-3PO droid. With base-stable, Tauntaun, functioning crane, two strechers, rotating radar dishes, falling ice, and speeder bike. Quote

StoutFiles Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 (edited) Falling ice? Now where could that be? See the two doorways with the ridiculously long icicles? Looks like you can pull the pin out and/or turn the pin that is nearby them, dropping/hitting the icicles on people. It's a pretty piss-poor feature, but whatever. mrblue Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 may buy this set, but as others pointed out, it seems a bit too many things thrown there to fill some gaps. figs are ok, nothing wow, but ok. for the base, to me, it looks like more a kids edition than a limited (star wars fans) one, with lots of "play" feature and nothing organized. have a nice lego day mrBlue Quote

I also noticed Tauntaun foot prints just on the left of the Tauntaun stable area. Its funny that they show Han on the minifig list, and there is a section for the Tauntaun, but they appear nowhere on the box art. EDIT: Has anyone else noticed that the box design is the same as last summer, with the Captain Rex on a blue background. I thought that a new design as coming out with Maul? Was that for 2012? I'm confused... Edited June 1, 2011 by Fives Quote

perplexingArticulator Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 It's great that they've finally put out a somewhat substantial Echo Base set after the last few have been impossibly barebones and, well, hardly a base; that this one actually looks like a base with an even vaguely cohesive structure is a nice improvement. That said, LEGO's seemingly eternal stalker-crush over the Battle of Hoth feels like it's getting old really fast, considering that the name "Hoth Echo Base" and permutations thereof has been applied to, what, three sets in the past five years? Couldn't they go focus on, for example, the Death Star interior sequences of A New Hope and try something fresh and different and exciting in which they've virtually never dabbled? I hate to be this disparaging about LEGO's choices outside of Hero Factory, but come on... The set itself is decent - I wouldn't call it anything spectacular, minifigs aside, but it's definitely a vastly superior effort to the last few "Echo Bases". I'm fairly sure I won't bother with it unless I find it on sale or something (good joke everyone laugh). Quote
StoutFiles Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 (edited) Let me show you how a simple mod helps save this set. Note, this does need 7666 for a good base. Other Hoth sets would help. Put the set in a L shape, it's almost there in the set picture. This is represented above in Red with a gray/black checkerbox border. Move the control panel out of the med bay as well as the control panel from 7666 into the blue box as a dedicated control room, you will need to plate the floor. Move the guns out of the med bay and over to the tauntaun stable. The orange area is now a dedicated ship bay for a snowspeeder and crane from 7666. Plate the floor and put some clear pieces down as runway lights. The bay can expand downwards if you want an X-wing in there as well. I put a wall on the outside and one on the inside to make the med bay a dedicated room. The wall from 7666 creates a huge door to complete the set. All the other hot turrets can be thrown outside in the yellow box. A simple mod makes this set a lot better, people need to stop freaking out and remember that LEGO's are customizable, that's why they're awesome. Edited June 2, 2011 by StoutFiles Quote

The main basis of the griping, I believe, is that after 8038 we know TLG can do a good base of this style. It's not that we can't fix it, that's easy; it's that we expected TLG to do a whole lot better than this. Quote

The main consensus seems to be that as an add on, it's fine, but something along the lines of the Endor set was what we were hoping for. The set just doesn't know where it belongs. The minifigs for the most part seem to be aimed at people buying a Hoth set for the first time, covering a range of key characters. However, the rest of the set looks like it needs to be added to the 7666 set. Quote

YavinBase Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 In my opinion, 7879 lacks the 'WOW!' factor. 4483 (AT-AT), 4504 (Mill. Falcon), 8038 (Endor Attack), 10179 (UCS Mill. Falcon), and 10188 (USC DS) are a few examples of sets that hit high on the ‘WOW!’ factor chart. The 2006 sets (6206 through 6210 in particular) in which I consider 2006 as the renaissance year of SW LEGO, even though the sets were mostly ships, I could only say to myself ‘hey, these sets are pretty slick. I am definitely going to buy these!’ Unfortunately I don’t get this vibe with 7879. 7879 reminds me of 7956 (Ewok attack) in which a bunch of LEGO bricks were hastily put together with the addition of a few never released before minifigures, except on a larger scale. This is coming from a pro-LEGO consumer who collected classic space and castle sets as a child and now collects LEGO SW and City sets as an AFOL. I agree that the great thing about LEGO, especially LEGO sets, can be modded in order to provide some sort of satisfaction to the end user, whether it is better playability, aesthetics, etc. I am an SW OT fan and collect only the LEGO SW OT sets. However, I think that LEGO has been ‘hitting the ball out of the park’ so to speak on the recent past and current PT sets, so much that is has been and will be tempting for me to leave them on the shelves. I just hope that LEGO uses some of their PT elbow grease on the design of future OT sets. Quote
