Hiyo, fellow builders! I have been working on a Cathedral, and would like some advice from the Experienced Church Builders and Castle Builders. This is my first time building a Cathedral; or a building of this scale, really. Any advice is welcome. Pictures:

The Whole Shebang. Not much Architecture yet, that's something I need a lot of advice for.

It's modular for Easy transport.

Close up on the tree. I like it, but I need a lot of advice for this as well.

Garden. I tried to make it very Church-y.

Pathway leading up to the stairs.

Close up on the stairs. I'm actually very happy with how these came out, but any advice to make them better will be listened to.

Entry way. I'm not good at these, so advice is definitely needed here.

Tile work on the inside. I quite like how the cross turned out.

Stairs leading up to the altar. I need a lot of advice on this as well.

The Fence. I tried to make this a modern looking thing, but I don't really know if I like it or not. Again, advice needed.

Minifigure for scale.

It looks good so far,

I think my main recommendation is to change the fence. It's hard to see the fence in this pic;

national-cathedral-picture.jpg

It's the black iron fence in the bottom right corner.

Something like this;

Nice tile work so far though.

Thanks. I was trying to go for a modern and classic blend, thus the odd fence. I do like the fence in your pic better, though. Any techniques for that?

Six years ago I took a stab at building a cathedral of my own (see my signature). Now, I recognize that now my creation is outdated because it doesn't use all the modern building techniques. However, I did learn the importance of laying out the columns in the nave and transept first. They end up controlling the roof height and the general feel of the MOC. So, if I could give you advice, layout the columns NOW and you'll end up with something marvelous.

By the way, what you have so far looks very, very good.

Okay. Thanks for the advice!

Improvements since last pictures:

- New wing added

- Columns added to one side

- Tile work almost done in new wing

- Second tree being made.

- Fence torn down, soon to be replaced with more accurate fencing

- Pathway shortened (For need of tan tiles for new wing)

- Ropes torn down.

I'm now quickly running out of pieces, so thus spawns a Bricklink order. Should be quite a costly order, but it'll be worth it, I think.

I'll have pictures of the new improvements up soon.

I also need a design for pews. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

And I need minifigure designs for Nuns, fathers, and a pope. Thanks.

Also, @ Tycho McKlorley- Your cathedral is actually quite lovely. Very inspirational, thank you so much.

I'd give you the advice to use a lot of small parts, such as plates 1 x 1 with clips, tiles 1 x 1 with clip, ... to give it an impressive look :) Also use arches, and watch out you don't make the walls too empty, by which I mean: use arches, different colours, bricks with grills, statues, parts that come out, ...

Here's the one I'm working on right now, which you can maybe use as reference

Okay, here are the pictures of the new improvements.

Toned down the front quite a bit.

New wing, with confession rooms. Ran out of Bley and Gray plates, so I had to use black.

New columns on the side, with the beginnings of a new tree. The idea was borrowed from Hogwarts of HP.

The columns are a completely separate entity from the church, and can be completely removed.

The project has been moved to a new location. I am also beginning the long and arduous task of sorting my collection, so don't expect too much progress until Next month at the most.

Unfortunately, this project was too massive an undertaking for me, resulting in it being scrapped. For the time being, at least. I may return to it in a few years. I'll be doing something a mite smaller now.
