Hi All

I like to do more MOC rather than set building and I intend to purchase individual bricks.

Anyone can advice a estimated quantity of bricks and color to be comfortable for some MOC building?

I am in Singapore, Does any Singapore Lego Fans or any Fans know of places to buy large quantity of individual bricks in Singapore where I can choose my own color rather purchase a standard box?

Any advice is welcome :)

I'm not sure what you mean by "Estimated quantity of bricks" but you can purchase individual bricks on this great website: http://www.bricklink.com

This is a great LEGO website with lots of different private stores selling minifigs, sets, and pieces for their own prices. I hope this is what you are looking for

If I want to buy, what is the quantity should I buy to be comfortable and in what assortment ?

This is my first time into MOC and have no idea. :)

That's a very difficult question to answer, LegoBuilder. It all depends on what you need to feel confortable, that will vary a lot from person to person. If your MOCs focus on one theme in particular, you might need lesser part variety before you feel like you have all you need. If you plan to build huge MOCs, then obviously you will need bulk quantities of pieces. You will probably want to start with smaller MOCs and get bolder as your collection grows, instead of trying to buy everything at once -- unless you already have specific projects in mind. In any case, the answer to your question is very subjective, I have less than 10,000 pieces in my post-dark age collection and I'm already more comfortable than when I started with my first set. But I feel like I will never be fully satisfied, there will always be more pieces that I would like and more sets on my wanted list. That's addiction I suppose!

As Flare suggested, Bricklink is a great online source to buy from if you have specific needs in mind. Otherwise, I'm sure that we have members from Singapore that will give you good local tips.

And welcome to EB!

Edit: One more suggestion to get started: you could try to buy a set or two that are good parts packs, like 10185 Green Grocer for instance. It's great fun to build, and will give you a good variety of parts for you to play with and try your hand at smaller MOCs. Once you have an idea of what you want to build, then you can order what's missing, either from Bricklink or by buying more sets. Again, it all depends of the theme you want to MOC in, that will define the kind of sets you should start with.

It's always good to have a decent supply of the basics - bricks, plates, slopes, tiles, just to name a few. But as Fugazi already stated, the type and color of pieces that you want to buy are largely dependent on whatever you want to build. Regardless, the aforementioned pieces will always be useful no matter what theme you may want to MOC in.

I am not sure how big your set collection may be, but I also find it helpful to disassemble sets and harvest them for pieces. Over the past few months I've been taking apart nearly all of my Bionicle sets as well as some of my System sets. Typically if I don't like how a set's designed or if it has a decent parts inventory I'll take it apart to add to my brick repository. As a result of doing that, both my Technic and brick collections have increased exponentially, creating that many possibilities for more MOCs.

It's also important to note that the size of a MOC does not necessarily dictate how 'good' it is. There are tons of MOCs out there that use less than 100 pieces but still pull off an amazing effect. How you use a certain piece or execute a build is more important than how many bricks are in it. Even with a limited collection of bricks, great things can be made.

As you keep MOCing and progressing in your building skills, you'll probably be able to identify and purchase certain pieces and colors that you may want more of. But no matter how many pieces you have, it'll always seem like there aren't enough pieces to build something - building with LEGO is like that often. Hopefully this helped a bit, good luck and can't wait to see your MOCs :classic:

It depends on the MoC.

If you are going with micro/mini scale, you will need tons of variety.

If you are going with large MoCs, it is basic bricks and plates all the way, but you'll also need many things like slopes and cheese slopes.

And of course, space ships will probably require other things than boats.

Anyway, if you have about 4 or 5 LEGO sets then you should already be able to do some MoCing, but of course, if you are planning to MoC something specific then you might need to go to bricklink.

LegoBuilder, I'm just starting to build some MOC's too. These are some of the ways I've gone about aqquiring the bricks I need:

- Have a read of this thread - The Bargain Hunter's Guide to LEGO

- The creator sets are good for building up a basic brick collection. For example if you're building city MOC's then 5891 - Apple Tree House might be useful.

- As others have already suggested, Bricklink is a good place to purchase specific pieces. I often start at this page: Catalog: Parts.

- Slightly off topic, but the tutorials contained in this thread make for a good read too: Advanced Building Techniques

Hope that helps!

What I always do when I am building is to add the bricks (and plates, etc) to my wanted list

on BrickLink. That way when I am going to order bricks I know which additional bricks I

was missing and I might add to my order.

Hi all, I like to build modular building to add on to the series but don't really want to tear down existing modular set that I had collected.

Would appreciate if someone who had done similar building set advice me on the best assortment of bricks to start with. eg 1x2 bricks.. color etc.
