Great review  I got this set just over a week ago and I will probably build it within the next few days, so I'll give my full opinion of it then.

Quick question, what are the rules on reviewing a model, is there a thread on it?

Maybe Town, but Historic Themes is restricted to pre-1900 thenes and creations... so far

Pre-1900? What about all the Adventurers reviews, then - should they be moved? Perhaps the Historic forum could be adjusted to pre-1960 or so, which would keep Space Shuttles out while retaining the entire Adventurers line (just an idea)...

Back to the set, I forgot to mention in my previous post that I also really appreciated the photo of the back of the box. It may be a minor thing, especially given that most people (including myself) usually discard the boxes, but I have to say I really love the shots of the shuttle "in action." I think TLG's packaging designers must have had real fun putting those together. I think I'd have to keep the box for this set just for those images on the back.

About the actual model, it's nifty that it retains so much playability. For this sort of model, TLG could easily get away with a much more static model intended purely as a display piece, but they instead went and put in all sorts of moving action features to play with. Coolness.

This is a nice model but I'm going to pass on it. I like the boosters and the NASA minifigs, but the shuttle itself is less detailed than the 7470 Discovery shuttle, especially the tail fin and satellite. The cockpit also looks really cramped; it would have been better to have one minifig sit behind the other.

Great pictures. I bought my shuttle in Legoland, Denmark. Me and some friends had a blast assembling it. The thing is huge and has great playability.

Hey! Are you old enough to be drinking scotch whiskey?

Hopin' to see more of a 'NASA' line of kits...Apollo rockets, capsules, rovers, etc.

No need to wait - the "Discovery" range of sets from a few years back should be right up your street if you're after NASA-inspired sets, and you can find them on Bricklink or eBay right now....

"Discovery" Theme

I'd love to see a picture of this new shuttle alongside 7470; Lego actually has a fantastic history of space shuttles, from the Technic shuttle (8480) to the Discovery shuttle and a bunch of less realistic 'playsets' including 6339, 6544 and 6346. I love them all !!

Thanks for the review - this would actually be one of the few sets I'd be interested in getting.

I think I disagree on the playability though (not that I care about that anymore, I'm too old for anything but the building :(). It's really not minifig scale, and by the looks of it there's no room to move around from place to place in the shuttle (I'm sure it's cramped on the real shuttle but they do have more than just a cockpit and a hangar for the satellite...).

Anyways...

Saw the set in real life for the first time at Brickfair. It really is beautiful. I hope someone goes the extra mile and builds a 747 transport plane-- me, I'm going to try and build a crawler for it on LDD. Hoping it goes smoothly!

Very lovely set.

Although it's smaller than the 2003 set, 10213 is closer to System scale which is more suitable for minifigs.

The main focus is the shuttle so they could have excluded the boosters and tank to put at a lower price point.

Hi folks, apologies for dredging up an old thread, but I picked this set up a few days ago and noticed some differences from the set in the review.

Firstly, there is no longer a second (scared) face on the female pilot.

I'm guessing the head honchos back at Lego HQ probably had a few letters of complaint along the lines of "So it's ok for the WOMAN to be scared, but not the MAN??!! That's SEXIST!!!"

Secondly, the white plates that cover the rear landing gear have gone, as has the 1x2 stopper plate on the side of the shuttle just above them.

The dark grey technic pieces used for the landing gear have now been replaced by differently shaped black ones.

The underside has had a couple of tweaks too, notably where the external fuel tank attaches to the underside of the shuttle.

The end of the Canada arm is now mostly black and has a different method of attachment to the satellite.

The box artwork has also been changed to show these differences.

I'm afraid I don't have a bricklink account yet so I can't show you good close-ups, but I do have a facebook album with some pictures posted here.

And I have to agree with you, it's a great set.

Bricklink really shouldn't be used for hosting photos. FB is just fine for that.

That's actually the subtly different 10231 Shuttle Expedition, rather than 10213 Shuttle Adventure that's reviewed here. There were a bunch of small changes between the two sets, mostly to reinforce the model as parents were buying it for kids and finding it a little too fragile. The astronauts also gained some hair along the way, so they can take off their helmets without having to go for the whole bald look!

Ah, my apologies, I didn't realise they were two different sets.

Given they're not only nearly identical visually, but also have exceedingly similar set numbers, I doubt you're the first person not to notice!
