I came up with an idea recently. Due to my profession I have some experience with map making. So I thought of doing something like that:

1)Take the famous Lego Pirate map piece:

2)Scan it

3)Enlarge

4)Use the original print as the background and based on it make a more detailed map, with towns, roads, ports, whatever... And the treasure location too.

So, this is just a vague idea. The point is to make my map look like the real thing, the Lego piece being just the simplified, minifig scaled replica. Now, what do you think of that? And - more important - what do you suggest this map should show, I mean, any ideas to inspire me? As far as I know the map doesn't represent any real part of the world - or am I mistaken? So it should probably show some fictional realm in which the Lego Pirate action takes place. An uncharted (in our world, but known in the Lego world) island in the Carribean maybe? Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Interesting idea Dremweb. I've tried making numerous Lego maps over the years and failed miserably (because I don't have the talent)- mainly with Adventure themes.

You could possibly add sections to the map based on the different Pirate themes/sets. Like having Enchanted Island on the map, the Eldorado Fortress (City of Eldorado), Sable/Saber Island, and all the other sets that I don't know the names to.

Neat idea though. Please share what you come up with.

Here's a copy of the Orient Expedition map with the names of the sets that I added. I was fooling around with this map several years ago. I'm just not good at adding/drawing my own landmarks:

The Pirate Comic Book had a map with Eldorado Fortress and Forbidden Island shown on two separate islands, however it was very simplified. Also, on the boxes and instructions of many Pirate sets we saw something like bird's eye images of seas, islands with locations of actual sets. I have an Orient Expedition map with all the sets on it, but it's also very simplified. I'm thinking about a real map, but on the other hand not too complex one - it should look like it was made in - say - the 18th century, when the action takes place. So no isohypses or other stuff like that - only things someone could've drawn on the map in the 18th century.

i would love to see this !!! i love that we AFOL use or professions to further fuel the hobby !!! as kids, this is something we had a hard time doing (no professions yet). its almost like we can enjoy the system so much more now that we have more life skills. i am a graphic designer and love making custom stickers for my MOCs !!! very similarly you are using your map making skills !!!

sadly, you asked for ideas, and without knowing what it is you will do with the map, its hard to contribute ideas !!!

lets hear more about it !!! brickminer

Well, lots of things can be done with it. One of them is making the map with locations of various original Pirate sets, like TheBrickster suggested. Another possibility is to create my own fictional world and then write stories which take place there (that's the hard way :-) ), or - a bit easier - make a map with all MOCs on it to show how far they are from each other etc. This is however currently impossible in my case since all my Pirate MOCs are ships and other mobile objects... However I might make the map now and the necessary MOCs later. Perhaps someone's got other ideas what purpose such a map might serve?

We could also all be given a territory on your map and then we should have the responsaibility of making this place grow with a harbour, shops and other stuff like that. Then we could start to trade with eachother on the map. Then that would be like a giant Lego MMORPG. That would be good X-D

Well like brickster said putting all the main Praite theme islands/fortress' would be a good start. The fact is, a map is to show you were things are, so eldorado, Imperial trading post, Rock island reffuge, enchanted island, volcano island, possibly the imperial outpost, sabre island, lagoon lock up, forbidden island of course, skull island, And perillious pitfall. Now see those are basicallay the main city's/hideouts. Now I would also possibly add "Areas" where the pirate ships and Imperial ships travel, have dotted lines between like eldorado fortress and sabre island...Saying "Carribean Clipper" you know what I mean? Well thats all I have to say, looking forward to it! Hope this helped ;)

These are all great ideas, however I don't have any experience with RPG. But I like the idea of a strategy - perhaps not an RTS as this would be difficult to play on a forum, I think a game in turns would fit better. This has given me an idea - perhaps each forum user could get some territory by building a MOC - a base, which would be afterwards placed somewhere on a map. This however might be difficult as making a MOC is not a simple and fast thing to do...

Wouldn't it be great to build a MOC! I'd like to build MOCs but I just dont' have time. I'd build a MOC on the weekend but I have this compulsion to socilialize. Why can't I be more introverted? Its a curse I tell you!

Does this mean we'd see Pirate vignettes from and comics from Mr Athos?

Maybe a vignette or two... someday... when I get a good idea for one. Stories... probably not. My hands are quite full with Adventurers stories right now. I would like a map for my Adventurers stories though... *sweet*

Well I was hoping for a map similar to the Bricksters. And I don't imagine the Adventurers will have anything more to do with Pirates, as they have already been there and done that. Besides I still have a long Asian story to do. And vikings. And maybe a city story. And an arctic story. Greece. One or two at the university. And Space. So I have a lot to do before repeating anything...

When did the Adventurers do Pirates?

Having considered this, I don't think building a MOC should be a condition to participate in the game - after all not everyone has enough time/bricks/talent to build a MOC and this shouldn't be the reason to exclude him from the game if he wants to play. Of course building your fortress or something so that other players can actually see it makes the game more interesting and helps you "feel the game" more, but it shouldn't be obligatory.

The game is currently one possible way of utilizing the pirate map and it's Mr tole_11's idea so perhaps he could tell us even more about how he imagines it.

I'm no expert in RPG so here are some basic questions I could think of:

1. How would people move around on the map?

2. How do you imagine darkening areas on the map - would that mean that every player has his own map with his part of the world sent to him and no one sees the complete map?

3. If so, how can the game be played on a forum - if you aren't allowed to see your opponent's map, you can't see his moves either (because you can't see the area where he moves), so is it possible to make your moves and other actions by writing posts? - other people would know what you're doing!

This sounds like fun and I would be willing to participate. I am also willing to help with the rules and since Phes has already done a game of sort perhaps you should ask his opinion on what works and what doesn't.

I for one think participants should have to build at least something small or a few figures for their important characters. If they don't have the parts needed I am sure they could ask another member to make and take pictures of them.

Also, from experience, it would not be hard for anyone to build vigs that could be placed together to create a larger MOC. One vig a week would not take more than an hour and if you watch more than an hour of TV you have the time to do that. Vigs are small and after you build them easy to store as well. If you start running out of ideas you could just make beach vigs for some shoreline or some jungle bits for background in your moc.

The more interactive building the better this will be I think. Check out places like portblock to see what I mean.
