Governor Mister Phes Posted April 20, 2006 Governor Posted April 20, 2006 The game is currently one possible way of utilizing the pirate map and it's Mr tole_11's idea so perhaps he could tell us even more about how he imagines it.I'm no expert in RPG so here are some basic questions I could think of: We (That'd be me and Jipay) were going to design a Pirate Strategy game eventually but we're working on too many things to get the project started. I was thinking about using Flash to design and program an interface but that would obviously require everyone who wants to play to install Flash... Quote

Dreamweb Posted April 26, 2006 Author Posted April 26, 2006 I like the idea SuvieD mentioned to me in a PM - to make a "Sid Meier's Civilization" kind of game. I must confess I came up with the same idea even before he suggested it, because, you see, "Civilization" has been my No 1 game for a long time, and it will probably stay this way. Quote
Evil Willy Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 I sure would like in on this...Hmm it is interesting to see how we will make this work. I suggest we use a chat of some sort MIRC'ish and play on there using a completley text based game. Well, thats just me. Some people I guess are probabley more vidual..We could make it sort of like Dungeons and Dragons. Anyways, im in when we have figured how to work it :D Quote

Did Suvie D happen to mention how a game like this would work over a message board? That's something I'd be interested in designing one day, but I won't have the time till mid November. Quote
SuvieD Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 Did Suvie D happen to mention how a game like this would work over a message board? That's something I'd be interested in designing one day, but I won't have the time till mid November. No, I didn't. For it to work well my guess is that people would not be allowed huge amounts of control over the game. On the map there would be numerous areas with towns or villages. Players would choose a character to begin and base any actions on that. That character would have a ship if a pirate or imperial officer of some type or they could have a fort or hideout. Then you would use a post a day system (or something similar) to expand your characters influence, wealth, or standing in the world. Each post could represent a day, week or month and would allow players to invest effort into improving the standing in the world. Computers can do more calculations, complex ones at that, than people can do so this would all need to be kept simple unlike games like Civ. Basically you would start with one character in an area of the map, a set amount of money and one moderate sized living quater. An inn, a merchant ship, a tower or something along those lines. Then characters would spend their money and effort points (see next paragraph) to build up in the direction they choose. Eventually you would be the pirate king or maybe even emporer over the whole map. Effort points (generic name) would be used to accomplish goals. Each day a person would get effort points to further those goals. It could be a static number or even a random one. if random you would either need a game master or use the honor system. Each participant could roll a six sided die and get that many effort points for the day. Players would get to roll for points every day they actively posted and on days they did not they would get only one point. That way casual players can still get points but not as many as those more dedicated. You could spend points on almost anything from hiring a servant to hiring an assasin or buying some material for a boat or fortress. Each thing you do would have a point value associated with it and when you had enough points you would be able to accomplish things. For instance if each day = one week in game time then one weeks labor for one person would be worth one point. If it is decided by the person in charge that it takes about 10 people 10 weeks to build a schooner then that is 100 points total to get that. The restriction comes in that even with 100 points it would still take 10 real life days to complete. Getting 100 points would obviously take more than 10 days, more like 30 days for an active player and 80 for a casual player. That is until they use points to invest in income producing things. It would take some ironing out and some decent rules put in place but it could work. It would need someone to run it if not a few people. But is is a good concept which can be kept as simple or made a s difficult as you would like. The game moderator could also hand out bonus points based on Mocs or character designs made for the game or even send natual disasters like diseases or storms that wreck havoc on ship crews or merchants. I see something like this being a lot of fun if done properly with some good moderation. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted May 31, 2006 Governor Posted May 31, 2006 Mr Suvie D you have put some thought into this game. The only problem with being the Game Moderator is it can become very time consuming making things run smoothly, unless the rules are very strict which comprimises the fun factor. Anyways, I'll make an attempt at creating a game in November or December. It might not work out but I'll give it a shot... Quote
