Jargo Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 (edited) yeah I mentioned that a few pages back. It's a nice touch. That minifig has more sense than to carry lots of banknotes. the plane looks odd with a white tail. all the other airport planes bearing the bird in flight logo have had coloured tails of either red or blue, oh with the exception of the seaplane in yellow, but they've all been coloured. to reverse the colours seems odd. doesn't quite work. It's a nice little plane of course with the ubiquitous pilot and man in open blue jacket, (who appears to do a lot of travelling judging by how many transport sets he appears in), look forward to bigger pictures. Fugazi Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Nice classic look! Reminds me of this, only slightly smaller: Quote
Aanchir Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 That bank looks absolutely wonderful - the color scheme is very unique and striking, and the armored car is exactly like I imagined it. I'm especially glad that the interior of the bank has a vault, and the way the set designers incorporated a criminal is brilliant. We're even getting several green suitcases and what looks like a new printed tile of some sort; overall, it looks like a complete deal, and if I hadn't already revamped my old Town Jr bank to look a lot like this very set, I would pick it up for sure. On the other hand, the police chase is okay, and it will probably be a good present for kids, but just... what is the deal with that trike? I thought we had gotten over the age of silly unrealistic "touches" like that - a recolor of the modern City bike in blue would have been a much better conclusion, and would probably push at least a few older buyers to pick up the set just for that. As of now, it's a fun playset for young lego fans, but hardly up to the level of what we've come to expect from the theme. So, a hit and a miss, which pretty much describes City 2011 as a whole for me. For every set that I like, there's one or two sets that I'm either indifferent on or just don't like at all. This is in stark contrast to the last few years, where there's only been a couple of genuinely bad sets IMO. I don't mind the trike piece in and of itself... but in my opinion, having it in blue is overkill. Most of the police stuff is white with blue accents-- even the car in the very same set! If the trike were in white, I don't think I'd have any problems with it. Quote
Derek Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 The airplane set is the 2011 airline promotional set, meaning 98% of Lego fans probably won't have direct access to it... Quote
Ogre Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 That plane looks really good actually. Very simple but effective deisgn, and not too blocky either. IMO, it looks much like a shorter version of the one from the 'City Centre Airport' set. Quote
Zorbas Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Great looking plane. The blue-white colour scheme looks beautiful and the silver turbines are a nice addition. My excitement however didn't last long because... The airplane set is the 2011 airline promotional set, meaning 98% of Lego fans probably won't have direct access to it... ...and this landed me at the Cruel Reality International Airport. Quote
prateek Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Lego's making a huge mistake by making that plane an airline exclusive. I'm sure if it was released to the public, it would be the most popular set of the year. It will catch the non-AFOL adult, because it looks like the plane they had as a kid, kids will like it because it's a plane (duh ) and parents wouldn't mind buying it since they had the same toy as a kid. Yoiu forgot to mention it would be quite cheap, so parents would rather buy it instead of 3181 or something else. Also, it is small and the wings are not that wide, so it would take up less room in a child's room, but still having all the playability that a bigger plane has. buddy Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 I'm not sure if anyone's noticed/posted, but it appears as though that new bank set has a 1x2 printed tile of a credit card! I noticed it in the large version of the pic on brickset. That's a nice touch, I agree it is more realistic than the minifig carrying around lots of cash. ~buddy~ Quote
autobrick Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 The airplane set is the 2011 airline promotional set, meaning 98% of Lego fans probably won't have direct access to it... Does anybody know how airline promotional sets work? I assume that they sell them through those catalogues (the ones filled with watches, perfumes and other things) found in the back of the seats (?). I've never seen Lego in those catalogues, but it's been years since I've been on a plane and I guess the promotional set would only be available through specific airlines in Europe (?). I really like the look of the Bank transfer set (almost certain buy), but I find the police chase to be a bit disappointing (certain pass). It is interesting how the built a sidewalk corner for the speed camera and traffic lights in this set, when they usually would have these free standing in previous sets. Quote

L@go Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 Does anybody know how airline promotional sets work? My experience is that airlines typically sell these on intercontinental flights, although I may be wrong. I picked up an airline exclusive on the plane from NY to Amsterdam a year ago (KLM), and when I was in Africa this summer with Lufthansa the Lego exclusive was in the catalogue. Forgot to buy one, though, and I keep regretting that... Quote

Delta 38 Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 (edited) Well, the bank looks a lot better, but I did like the older dark colour scheme. It looks more realistic this way, though. Are the green suitcases meant to represent large stacks of money, or something? I'm a bit confused. I like the credit card piece though, it's more practical than carrying around a $100 note. I wonder if the bank will be affordable (to my standards). It would be nice to get an affordable bank and an affordable prison set. I wouldn't normally be interested in City buildings, but those two would be exceptions. Edited December 20, 2010 by Delta 38 Quote

I think the green cases are money, but hey, at least we get a bunch of green suitcases! I dare Lego to put coins in this set. That would be awesome. Of course, we need a huge safe in the bank to to put the coins in, too, like in Spiderman 2. Quote
ACCURATEin Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Did you see the safe in through the window in the bank on the second level? Quote

Klaus-Dieter Posted December 20, 2010 Author Posted December 20, 2010 (edited) Looks good, but we need coins! I completely agree with you, prateek! But since there are no coins pictured on the box art pic, I fear that there even will be no included. Klaus-Dieter Edited December 20, 2010 by Klaus-Dieter Quote
Mr. Elijah Timms Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 We could always use pirate coins-- but they are gold. Some nice shiny silver would be nice as well. What I'd really have liked to see was some gold bars, for the more seasoned criminals of the city Quote

RoryoCox Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 I think the new bank is great. Finally, a design which I actually want to buy. These sets look to be promising and the bank makes it for me. The two levels look great. The traffic cop set is nice and it is great to see a female officer. The plane, however, does not do it for me. It looks to much like every other design we have has in the past Quote
Enpaz Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 (edited) What I like most of the new sets is definitely that awesome new plane which is, coincidentally enough, very similar to 6368 Jet Airliner from the mid-eighties. The new Canine (K9) mold with print is great too, although the previously-issued dog is a bit more classic. I still need to get that one in gray. (The Grimm) Also great is the (rather) small Space subtheme. The buggy and the space shuttle seem to be very cool. Well, the big base is also great but I'll most likely not buy it as I can already imagine the price tag! Cheers! Edited December 20, 2010 by Enpaz Quote
