Eskallon Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Hello all windows and mac users. I am currently using a 1 and a 1/2 year old macbook. However about 2 months ago I accidently dislodged the screen a little and at certain angles the screen display was very dark and now today I seem to have dislodged it slightly more abd now at 99.9% of angles the screen is dark and therefore the only way I am typing now is by the occaisonal bit of light when I give the screen a smack. So I am assuming that some kind of sensor has benn moved slightly or something so does anyone know if there is something I can do to make it work properly again. Hopefully I can find a solution without having to pay $$$ to apple to get it fixed or even have to get a new laptop. Thanks Eskallon (p.S- I can't see the screen really so there may be some mistakes in this post and I will try to correct it when I use another computer in the house.) Quote
OneSnowTrooper Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) It sounds like you damaged the video cable going to the screen. If your not afraid to open your mac you can try to replace the cable yourself. What version of the macbook do you have ? (exact number) Edited August 20, 2010 by OneSnowTrooper Quote

I just found that flapping the screen helps for aa couple of seconds. Quote

You probably checked already but make sure Enhance Contrast is set to normal. The flapping seems to confirm the faulty video cable, have you tried to slowly flap the screen in a postion in which it stays clear ? Quote
Siegfried Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 My best guess would normally be that you've damaged the power to the backlight... but the "very dark at certain angles" at first that then became "99.9% dark at all angles" implies something different. To my knowledge Apple put ambient light sensors in the keyboard so it shouldn't be that. I looked around and found this, which give some advice. Quote

Yes it must be the video cable, the flapping and smacking is hit and miss so it sometimes does it and other times dosn't. 10.5.8 thats your MAC OS version I assume, I mean Macbook Pro 15" 2008 or something like that. OneSnowTrooper Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 (edited) Ok. Ok. Ok. If it's a Pro version you can check here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Device/MacBook_Pro_13%22_Unibody for the standard model: http://www.freshwap.net/1bb/dl/Apple+Service+Source+Manual+MacBook+13+inch+Aluminum+late+200 Edited August 20, 2010 by OneSnowTrooper Quote
Eskallon Posted August 23, 2010 Author Posted August 23, 2010 I found out that I had a 2 year parts and labour guarantee with John Lewis and after ringing up they said they would fix it in a couple of hours or if not then they would send it off too repaired. I just need to take it into the MK store which also means LEGO. Thanks for all the help everyone, much appreciated. Quote
