CP5670 Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 LUGNET became disused because of competition. Web forums up until roughly 2001 were pretty technical to set up. Lugnet's "forum" seemed to be essentially a newsgroup engine with a web interface tacked on. When you made a post, it had to go through your email and the newsgroup server, and the whole process took a few minutes. It wasn't really what we call a forum today, and even in 2000 I thought that the system was clumsy and outdated, as regular forums based on commercial forum software had started to come up by then. Fugazi Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 I've mentioned that before a long time ago, and I think the reasoning not to do it at the time was that the unwashed masses are dumb in the ways of LEGO. They'll enter incorrect colors and part numbers a LOT, and the admins were very worried that it would quickly become a mishmash of crappy data. You really have to know your stuff when it comes to LEGO colors and parts. While Peeron is still for the time being my favourite part and set reference, I must add that even with their introverted policies it still has a good deal of incorrect inventories and colour references. The frustrating part is that there is no way this is going to change if the admins don't acknowledge external contributions. I too was willing to help out with contributions or even administration, but alas Peeron is a closed box and this is what will make competitors like Brickset or Basebrick eventually supersede them. Legoist Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 After telling Peeron all my sets, as well as all my spares (terrible way to do it peeron.. probably there a dozen better ways... different topic..), it would be great if I could at a click of a button, and waiting, get a list of all the sets I can build using the bricks I have, alas the only option is to go through all the sets in the DB and for each see whether you can or not do it... I think Peeron is already a fantastic website, but I would welcome this further addition! I guess the algorithm shouldn't be difficult to develop, but perhaps it might take a while to get the results of "trying" building all the existing sets. I would also like Peeron to drop their "feature" of not showing building instructions for sets of the last few years. It's a "courtesy" that TLG really never asked for, and it certainly bothers a few users. Quote

Brickfactory is more comprehensive and loads faster, and for sets from the last 5 years or so, you can always just go to the Lego customer support site. On the other hand, Peeron is still good for catalog scans, as some of those are not yet mirrored on any other sites. (the ones on Brickfactory are often different) Quote
