That's a good news, I hope they use this time to improve again this version 4.0.

I ever hope in a portable version.

You could always jailbreak an iPad, and install Windows on it. There are plenty of videos on YouTube as to how to do this, but it's a scary, warranty-voiding process, and the programs won't run nearly as fast as on a computer.

Perhaps there is some issue with my English!

With "Portable" version of a software (for windows) I mean a software that I can put on a device suck as a pen drive or an external hard disk and execute it on every machine compatible with that software (every windows machine), because it works only inside its folder.

It would be very very useful for me, but it seems it was not on the roadmap.

Maybe this additional time could be used to make a portable version available (it is not too difficult to obtain a portable version from a standard one).

A version for a mobile device (based on android for example) could be interesting, but now I have not a device capable to run that.

Couldn't you just copy all the System files that LDD needs to a flash drive and then redirect any links between files?

What do you mean exactly?

Obtain a portable version is not so simple if you only have the binary.

There are software that "emulates" a virtual environment, other than track what the software writes in other places than the software folder and save and restore that every time you close/open the application.

So, with a bit of work you can obtain a sort of portable version, but it is not a real portable version for different reasons.

I have a LDD 3.0 portable version of this kind. So I'd like a true portable version for LDD 4.0

Well, I've been noticing since Wednesday or so that the buying process is having the hiccups. It keeps on telling me that I can't order my modell because certain parts (especially the train buffers but also the occasional grey plate for some reason) are unavailable. It doesn't do so when I click onto the Buy-button but only once I'm on lego.com. This could mean that they're already changing the inventory for LDD 4.0. But then again it doesn't necessarily need to mean anything, maybe the new trains are just selling unexpectedly well and they can't produce those parts fast enough...

I hope the buffers are coming back, though, because I need them for my current project...

Oh, I see what you mean. Sorry.

Hi all,

Let me first say that we in 3D Studio (informally known as the LDD team) are very happy and proud that the new release of LDD, version 4, is so eagerly anticipated.

I wish I had more concrete news for you (the reason why I have not posted earlier is that I hoped I would have), but what I can essentially say is that LDD 4 is pretty much done but we are waiting for a "launch window" where we can put it online.

We were originally scheduled for a late September launch but, as another member at the site correctly guessed, LEGO Universe is pulling a lot of resources these days, and this has made it necessary to reshuffle our launch plans. Of course we would like to get LDD 4 out now that it is done, but LEGO Universe is a very important project to all of us, and launching it successfully, which we are very much on track to do, has top priority.

I will let you know when we have an update for you on the launch date for LDD 4.

Best regards,

Claus Toftegaard Matthiesen

Technology Manager, 3D Studio

I have the promised update for you: The launch date for LDD 4 has been set to this Friday, the 29th of October.

Great news! That was sooner than I expected.

Sadly it can't be my top Friday priority because the day's quite packed. Taking a Thermodynamics exam and hoping to catch MUSE perform at a music fest in New Orleans. so I'll probably be downloading when I wake up Saturday afternoon

I'm thrilled that y'all could move it out so quickly. I'll save most of the congratulations for after I've tried it out

Interersting subject. Specially the history of it and Maxwells' demon.

Good luck.

Thanks, Superkalle - for the link and the luck. I should pull through fine, just gotta catch up a bit over the week. I love all the physical phenomena that contradict the expected. Its like the LDD bugs of real life

I couldn't be happier! I had given up on seeing this any time soon. I'm praying for improved hinge tools, then maybe I can rebuild my Venator model and *enjoy* the process. However, I'll be content if half the stuff I've seen in the videos work.

The only problem is that a new Minecraft patch is coming out the same weekend... I'll have to take Monday off.

:oh: Finally. Only 2 days left! I just hope I'll be able to upload my old models from V3 and LU mode

Upload to where? The DesignByMe gallery? Not a chance. The DesignByMe gallery is only open to things that use the DesignByMe palette, and that's not set to change for months. A new version of LDD has nothing to do with what's in the DBM palette; it just changes the interface you use to build with those parts (and possibly improves the quality of the building experience in other ways, like correcting programming errors in how parts are rendered).

The DesignByMe gallery certainly wouldn't be opened up to models built in LU mode unless they strictly use parts from the DesignByMe palette. All that would do is confuse and irritate kids who have no idea how to access LU mode-- and while LEGO's OK with people using this mode, it's not about to publicly release the details on how to unlock a mode not covered by their own customer service department. From a business angle, it would also be a poor decision, as it would draw attention away from the DesignByMe mode which directly influences sales, or the Creator and Mindstorms modes that promote sales in other themes.

But if you're talking about just loading older, 3.0 files on version 4.0, I'm certain it would be possible. Nothing we've read about the new mode hints that there will be an overhaul in the data structure. Rather, 4.0 just looks like a more streamlined version of 3.0 with better graphical capabilities and some additional functions. It's possible that there might be larger changes, but that seems doubtful especially as it would make it impossible to download and open the files of models featured in the DbM gallery.

This one

Well thanks for a thorough explanation

Well dude the LU creation lab gallery is pretty robust, you can link a selection of files to any models you put on there, LXFs included

This one

oh, haha. gotcha. I got caught up in the misunderstandings too. it's weird though, what I can and can't load from the older older versions, all things I know I started making at the same time, but probably made changes to some in a later middle version - and I can still open those by keeping them alive thusly, the other's no such luck. so if you're gonna worry about any of your stuff make sure you save what 1.X and 2.X models you're lucky enough to be able to.
