So the digger. Two black gears on the roof control digging arm motions.

As pointed out elsewhere, there's a pin joiner by the rear right mudguard. This looks to be rotatable - it seems to be vertical in the smaller image. Wonder if it moves the outriggers directly, or if it shifts a driving ring, allowing the roof gears to move the outriggers....if it's a driving ring, the other gear might allow the digging arm to slew left/right. I can't see if that's possible, but it seems that the digging arm could be centre-pivoted.

Looks like the front arm is raised by the black gear, directly attached to the mini-LA. Brutally simple, but probably effective. Exhaust seems to control bucket.

About the Backhoe:

If you look at the back there is an UV joint leading to the lower LA. Behind the pole reverser (which controls the stabilizers), there seems to be another one for the second LA. As someone wrote these lead to the two knobs on the roof. This confirms that the digging arm is slewable, and if you see directly above them, there seems to be an 8 tooth gear underneath the triangle. Although you can't see a worm gear, I'm almost certain it is one and that it's connected to the black axle joiner behind the mudguard.

If this is right it's brilliant use of small space, and unlike the 8455 - there's even a seat!

btw, the front of the supercar is very 'aston martinish'

WTF? Is There any pact between Eurobricks and TLG?

This is unofficial lego message board...

Hi,

Even if this is an unofficial lego message board, posting CONFIDENTIAL and COPYRIGHTED material here would be illegal and could cause LEGO to send a Cease-and-desist order to the ISP or the owner of the forum, causing its complete shutdown.

We don't want that.

So respect the copyright and confidentiality rules

Thanks,

Noam

There is a discussion about that issue going on here. What TLG can do legally is honestly not clear to me. The confidential stamp means nothing in itself. However, EB does have its own rules on posting such images. I don't agree with them personally, but we have to abide by them. Linking to the images is fine as far as I know.

Back on topic, it's obvious now that the small LAs do in fact work. I believe TLG is thinking of LAs as a replacement for pneumatics at this point, in which case it would be logical to have small and large versions of them. I can think of many uses for those LAs.

Hi,

I agree that the topic is small LA :)

Just a few legal notes:

1) Linking to illegal content doesn't protect you from prosecution - see Torrent files, cracks for programs, etc

2) I don't think EB wants to go to court and prove that the images weren't on their site - lets help them by not giving LEGO any reason to get LEGAL

3) Final note on the matter :) if something is stamped CONFIDENTIAL you need to assume it is as such, you can't ignore it. At the very least it is copyrighted material that was SCANNED and is COPIED without permission, otherwise why the low-res pictures and the CONFIDENTIAL stamps? :)

But I agree, I enjoy the pictures as much as everyone else, but I want EB to not get into trouble.

Lego purposely lets these pictures get leaked out to build up hype. This same thing happens every single year. They let them get out and then demand that they be removed to build up the excitement. Then after they get pulled you have 100's if not 1000's of people scouring the internet trying to find them. It's a giant marketing scheme.

Check out few pages back...mods specifically told not to post any more CONFIDENTIAL pictures.

I want to see them as much as you do...I wrote that warning in a friendly manner to user icks.

I don't understand the assertion that it's an "epic failure" either. Without a doubt it's the closest thing we've had to a supercar since the 8466 Offroader, and, in my opinion, it's the best-looking of all the supercars. 8448 is the only one that even comes close, not counting the Ferraris, as they weren't supercars. It's hard to tell right now, but it may be better looking than even the Ferraris. Also, it has two completely unprecedented features: the hood and the spoiler. The doors are fundamentally different from the hydraulic ones in 8448 and 8466, and are nearly completely unprecedented. As others have said, a gearbox isn't all that exciting of a feature, at least for the target audience, which isn't us. Even for Technic and auto enthusiasts, a gearbox controlling various features is really more interesting than one that controls engine speed, especially since Lego gearboxes are completely unlike real ones and the engine is driven by the wheels anyway. I would, however, love to see Lego produce a more realistic gearbox, maybe using 24t and 20t clutch gears in addition to the 16t. But we will have to continue to wait and hope for that.

Now I wanna understand why in italian catalogue they tell a 4 speed gearbox, while in dutch catalogue (language that I'm enough able to understand if I read slowly) they clearly say the gearbox is useful for motorized functions :sceptic: .

It all depends on how you take the description: there is something between the seats that looks and works like a 4-speed gearbox, but the gearpositions are used to control different functions.

Keep in mind this is not a Technical description, but a sales pitch - it looks like a gearbox, you can shift the lever.

That's what i've been saying.

A clarification: the term 'epic failure' was already used by another EB member to refer to a kind of model like 2009 Tractor with Trailer and this year #8041 Race Truck, that were advertised as the UCS models of their year and, instead... I thought it was an usual catchphrase, at least in American slang, and I used it. I didn't know it were 'stupid' language used by teens :hmpf::blush: . But it's useful to give someone the idea of a... 'epic' failure, LOL  .

About the gearbox use: it seems TLG forgot their own product is an educational toy too; in these years they focalize the sets mainly on functionality purpose, leaving mechanical one often on the edge (with some notable exception, of course  ). As a Technic fan, this way makes me sad  .

'Epic fail' is like 'lol'. Invented in the world of epic-lol-i-net, and usually not very true.

internets FTW.

(More English manglage to avoid)

The supercar and backhoe look like some pretty good sets. I think I'll have to pick them up once they hit the shelves (If they aren't too expensive). Neither set is as good as comparable sets from the past, but still worth buying.

And about the supercar, a real 6 speed gearbox would be nice and would be more realistic, but I've got no complaints with LEGO using it to switch between functions. I think it would make for a more interesting build. The model not being 100% realistic doesn't really matter to me since I would take it apart within the first month anyways.

I'm disappointing that the helicopter doesn't appear to have any kind of variable pitch rotor blades or rotor tilt function. Bummer.

Anyways, it looks like there are some good sets coming out!

Bah, these sets are no good.

We get YET ANOTHER small helicoptor (in fact, its red just like the one from 2010)

We get YET ANOTHER backhoe (again, we just had one)

Yet another crane

Plus we get a "supercar" thats nothing like the classic supercars (8865 test car, 8880 supercar, 8448 super street sensation, 8466 4x4 off-roader). Not only that, its red (why is it that LEGO seems to think sports cars are always red or yellow?)

Why does LEGO keep producing the same things over and over? (and in the same colors too)

Why not some different colors for once? (for example, I think the supercar would look cooler say black)

True, the last backhoe loader was in 2003. But we have had a backhoe or front end loader of some kind every year since then.

There are so many wonderful things TLG could be doing in Technic (and have been doing in the past) instead of the same thing again and again.

Posted (edited)

I really don't mind having the same thing over again, as long as it's always an improvememt on the last. Sadley niether the backhoe or the "super"car is an improvement on what's been done before. But then these are only the first half sets so maybe that's being a bit harsh.

Yes, 2003 was yesterday :hmpf: .

I also feel the same, but remember that LEGO official sets are first in foremost TOYS meant for growing kids and ideas are coming out of focus marketing groups with a very serious approach onto the "sell-ability" of the same to the target people.

Kids usually do not have our adult kind of collections with 5 backhoe and 3 cranes parked on the shelves...hence because the kind of public they cater tends to change completely every 5 years or so (3?,4?,7 years?), things tend to repeat...also colors tend to repeat cause those are the colors that most impress the mind of a kid...Having said that the new set for next year so far are just a big disappointment for me too.

I agree, my kid likes cranes, trucks, extractors, etc and he is 3 years old

Last year, when he was 2, he liked cars mainly

I believe LEGO is "repeating" the items, as they note that people (parents) buy in cycles, and usually buy things for their kids, trying to aim at buying something different (type of "machine") each year.
