Hey,

A BZP member has reported that they got a Patrick minifig in the mail, and...well, here's the page and here's the quote:

I don't know if anyone else has gotten this or not, but today I got a package from LEGO in the mail when I hadn't even ordered anything. After opening it, it had a Patrick mini-figure in it with a postcard that told me I was chosen as one of the first to be a part of the first "LEGO Pass-Along Patrick Mini-Figure Adventure." Basically, what the card says is to do something fun with Patrick, and take a picture of it. Then send the picture and a description of what you did back to LEGO. Then give Patrick to a friend to do the same thing, who will then give it to another friend and so on. Then all of the pictures will be posted on the LEGO Spongebob website. I don't know how many of these have been sent out, but I doubt there are many of them. I'll try to get some pictures of the figure and the postcard up later.

This sounds like an official Lego company deal, unlike the C-C deal, which, I believe, is strictly a fan based arrangement.

what if someone keep's patrick

By not starting a post with a large letter and ending a question without a question mark will mark you as a spammer, mark my words.

This is indeed interesting, I wonder how people are chosen, and why just Patrick (I guess some episode reference), is this a US only thing? Yet we are not sure if these licenses will even hit europe. Dora the explorer didnt (alteast not Sweden).

Let's view this objectively.

1. they gave out patrick and not spongebob, who is the main char, to lower the incentive to pilfer.

2. they gave out to respected members (or founders) of Lego fan clubs. There is little incentive for fan club founders to hog items because they are given exclusive interviews, sneak peeks, and other more valuable incentives than a patrick mf.

3. even if a member decided to keep patrick, once the SB line is out, he/she can easily get a set to replace the patrick. This is the primary reason I believe TLG sent out patrick and not SB. E.g., if I wanted blacksuit batman and already got the blacksuit batman from Lego, would I even want to buy the set? If I got two-face, I would still need to get blacksuit batman because he is the main character.

4. the respected members would only pass patrick to someone they trust. If the member can trust them not to keep patrick, the likelihood of the recipient keeping patrick is low (ie why hand over to someone else if you can keep it yourself? Unless the person can be trusted to continue the chain.)

so, what's the conclusion? the patrick chain is going to continue for a good while (maybe a year or two) generating good publicity and eventually wound up in a high risk individual who will decided to keep it for himself/herself. in the meantime TLG would have gotten free advertising for little to no cost (what's $2 per MF eh?).
