Cyclonis Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Hey all, For my story on my site, It is a medieval story which is based both on land and sea. I know I am giving away alot, but I'm planning on building an old ship/galleon for my story for the Royal Knights. What parts do I need to build this? I only want a small little ship for a couple of knights. What peices and certain parts do I need for the ship to look more medieval Royal Knights, than just Pirates? Anyway Thanks for your help. Its greatly appreciated. -Cyclonis. Quote
Jipay Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 The hull should be the same as for a pirate ship. The sails are the main difference IMO but I'll rather let mister Phes answer to your question :-P Quote
natelite Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I think the Viking ship/boat looks medieval. Pirates' ships look too high tech for the medieval era. Quote
Sir Dillon Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I'm not really sure what size you want it, but maybe something like this? http://peeron.com/inv/sets/6057-1 If that is what you want, you can just look at the inventory. Quote
Evil Willy Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I believe natelite might be right, but the only problem is that you cant really build apon a viking ship. As for me I would use a normal pirate hull. A brown one preferably, depending on what your looking for. The only necisary pieces I would say you need are the hull pieces, one large mast (Consisting of 3 pieces, bottom, center top.) And atleast one more little piece of mast (One's used on the merchant ship in the imperial trading post) for the front mast of the ship. like so... But of course the look of the ship is up too you. If this is your first MOC ship I suggest starting with something like the Carribean clipper, and changing colors, and modifying over time. So you get a nice structure. Now remember its all up to you whether your ship will look medieval or not. Useing the right colors is a huge part of it. Good luck, hope this helped a little. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted May 3, 2006 Governor Posted May 3, 2006 First of all, by medieval exactly what does that mean to you? How old did you envision? By definition the Middle Ages started in the 6th century and ended in the beginning of the 16th century, so even though there were no radical technological advancements ships did evolve over that period. If you follow Mr Natelite's suggestions then it might look something like this: Or if you wanted something that looked more like a galleon, then perhaps this: Quote
SuvieD Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Go with something like the first picture in Phes' post. It is very middle era. The fighting top or crows nest is an important feature for archer defenses be sure to include one. And rememnber to include long oars if you have them. Quote
Norro Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I built a medieval ship ages ago, (not a realistic one), the only thing I would suggest is keeping the deck low if you are going for a smaller ship so that you don't end up with a galleon... my poor effort. I'll have to try a ship again some time. God Bless, Nathan Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted May 4, 2006 Governor Posted May 4, 2006 You haven't shown us this MOC before have you Mr Norro? Quote
Cyclonis Posted May 6, 2006 Author Posted May 6, 2006 Not only is it my first boat MOC, it's my first boat. Full stop. Of course I own the Viking longboat as I said before, but I don't actually own a ship so I wouldn't have a clue as to parts or anything. Thanks for the help, but I need further discussion. I guess I'll have to go with Phes' first picture, but what about a boat like that, but with a flat, square-shaped kind of back? Here, I'll give a pic of what I mean: Like that...kind of. I'll have a play around on MLCAD/LDraw and I'll see what I can come up with. I'll shows you all once I'm done the main bit and I'll play around with the colours and see what you think, etc. Well thanks. -Cyclonis Quote
Norro Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 You haven't shown us this MOC before have you Mr Norro? No, it is very old and not of high enough standard to be worth showing about... God Bless, Nathan Quote

Sir Dillon Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 It's made by brickshelf user DYuhas, who I believe is a member of FBTB. His gallery: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?m=DYuhas Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted May 8, 2006 Governor Posted May 8, 2006 I hear a lot about this FBTB message board... All bad of course :-D One day I must launch an operation to convince their members interested in historic themes to move over here... Quote

FBTB doesn't like it when people advertise other sites though, so you'd probably end up getting banned. :-P Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted May 8, 2006 Governor Posted May 8, 2006 Advertising? What kind of fool do you take me for, Sir Dillion? I have much more cunning methods than that... Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted May 8, 2006 Governor Posted May 8, 2006 This is not the thread nor the moment to divulge in such information. Anybody could be reading... Even them... Quote
The Hordesman Posted May 8, 2006 Posted May 8, 2006 When building ships, Im never satisfied with galleys since they looks boring, and cogs are... Uninteresting. Me like cannons! So therefore, most of the ships Ive built have been early Galleons, now these ships have an unique appearance: The back and front of the ship has a number of levels, and lots of holes for cannons. The middle looks rather flat in difference to the rest of the ship, and the ship is very cramped. Its a sort of cog, but looks more menacing... And tall, plus, theres tons of cannons for all your sailory joy. Never succeeded in creating an actual ship of this type, since it requires alot of cannons, men and something bigger than a little ship base. Most of my ships have been in the style though, even converted the Durmstrang ship into one. Aye matey, I love them beauties! Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted May 8, 2006 Governor Posted May 8, 2006 Hordesman, you got pictures of your converted Dungstain, I mean Durmstrang! Anyways, aren't cannons a bit too modern for European medieval ships? Quote
The Hordesman Posted May 9, 2006 Posted May 9, 2006 Hordesman, you got pictures of your converted Dungstain, I mean Durmstrang!Anyways, aren't cannons a bit too modern for European medieval ships? I should take a pic today, probably. Needs some modifications first... As said, It is a late medieval ship, a 1400's, so cannons were used. Cannons were actually used alot in the late middleages, replacing ballistas and catapults. Due to their small size, heavy damage and mobility they began being mass produced, and they were perfect for ships. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted May 10, 2006 Governor Posted May 10, 2006 The Hordesman, after you take pictures of your ship feel free to create a new thread for it and we'll give it a good discussion. Meanwhile it would be good to get an update from Mr Cyclonis... Quote
Dreamweb Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Here's another cog I came across today while browsing recent brickshelf folders. Folder. Quote
Norro Posted May 13, 2006 Posted May 13, 2006 Here's another cog I came across today while browsing recent brickshelf folders. That's quite good... nice find. I'm still not a huge Lego cog find but perhaps I'll try one eventually. God Bless, Nathan Quote
Cyclonis Posted May 13, 2006 Author Posted May 13, 2006 Here's another cog I came across today while browsing recent brickshelf folders. Folder. Aaaa-HA! That's exactly what I want! something that is a grey/black ship hull, with the classic royal knights style to it with a dash of castle still on the boats (battlements) and I'll add a sail to it. That's the very thing that I'd like. I'll have to see what ship hull peices he used and try to make one similar for my story. Not a complete copy...but quite close ;-) My knowledge of Pirate ship peices is very small, could someone help me out and tell me what hull and mast peices were used, and if I can add a sail to that mast peice/s, etc. -Cyclonis Quote
