Skafte Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 (edited) Hi all, I'd like some help. In case you haven't heard, there is a CubeDude Vignette Contest over at FBTB. In short the rules are build a 16x16 vig (no overhang) with 2-4 CubeDudes from a licensed theme (or Power Miners). Here are some pics of my work in progress, it shows the scene from The Last Crusade when Indiana Jones and Elsa Schneider go down in the catacombs beneath the library in Venice. Marcus Brody is waiting for them, but Kazim of the Order of the Cruciform Sword sneaks up on him to steal the Grail Diary. Overall pic. I notice now that the bricks and plates are not put together properly, but these are not the final pics, thankfully. Indy and Elsa downstairs. Do you think I should add water and/or rats? Both don't appear until later, but I have already made some changes... The skulls in the walls are made CubeDude style. "What's this one?" "The Ark of the Covenant." "Are you sure?" "Pretty sure." A bit cheesy effect, but I started in pearl gold and realized how much more trans-yellow I had. Needs proper lighting. Boys on top. I'm happy with the gold thingy Indy used for cracking the floor, all nice and chrome! C&C welcome, the deadline is this Sunday... More pics on Flickr Oh, one final thing. Should I keep Kazims square fez or should I give him a dk red cone instead? I have one on the way from BL, had to go with a black for now. I'm thinking of a way to attatch a tassle to either fez. Oky Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 (edited) Very nice! The characters are spot-on, and there are some nice details in the scenery! My only complaint is that the arms are one stud too long. I can understand if you don't have the right pieces in to right color to make them like normal CubeDude arms, but I think you should definitely shorten Indy's and Brody's right arm. And yes, I think yous should give Kazim a cone fez! I'm not sure if that takes away from the cubeness of the head (I'm still quite sketchy on the style-rules for CubeDudes myself) but I think it looks much better. As for the tassle, I'd try to attack a lever to the fez somehow. Good luck in the contest! I'll be entering too. Edited October 25, 2010 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 This is an excellent CubeDude MOC entry Skafte! I'm no so much of an expert in CubeDude-building, but I think they all look great, the vignette is also very well-done. I personally like the squared fez, gives it more of a variation together with the black coned one. But it's just me. I wish you all the best for the competition. Quote

Yes, the arms... I have given this a lot of thought (about 35 seconds in all) and decided to go with what I thought looked good. But you are right, the CubeDude movement seems a bit adamant in how things should be. I guess I'll change them all. For a tassle, I'm actually considering a black Clone helmet antenna or what you call 'em. Any opinion on the water/rats thing? Thanks for the input, and good luck to you too! Oh, and thanks to KielDaMan as well. If I go for a cone fez, it will be dk red! Edited October 25, 2010 by Skafte Quote
Oky Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Oh yes, the water and rats are practically a must for this scene! Just a layer of transparent plates/tiles will do. Hm... I don't think the antenna will work, mostly because there's no easy way of attaching it anywhere. Can't you just use some Lego rope and have it hang out of the fez? That would be both easy and authentic! Quote
Skafte Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 (edited) Thanks again! I have ideas with trans-black tiles for water, and also tiling the ledges for a smoother look. I'm also thinking about ways of making the walls a bit more interesting, log and grill bricks etc. Should I close the back portion with a third wall? That would give more space for more skulls and give it a darker look, but would also crave better lighting for taking pics. A quite dark ref pic: Another one for top floor: Note that Indy has a dk red tie, Brody a blue one and Elsa's sand blue shoes! Oh, just noticed: should her dress be dk gray? I'd also like to exchange Kazim's red stud flower for a , but I don't know how to attatch it. The antenna says pretty secure in a jumper plate. Not properly connected, but it looks quite good. Rope is the obvious solution, but I dont really like strings and rubber bands in LEGO... And have you any idea how much a in dk red sets you back? Or how rare a simple is in dk orange? I am BL:s best customer right now. Edited October 25, 2010 by Skafte Quote

It would certainly enhance the look and feel of the MOC, and there's always to find the right lighting. EDIT: But if you're going to do that, I'd leave Elsa gray since she would become nearly invisible in such a dark scene in dark gray. I'd also like to exchange Kazim's red stud flower for a , but I don't know how to attatch it. Simply use one of these: And have you any idea how much a in dk red sets you back? Well, as I said, it would be fine if you just leave most of the arms as they are, but sounds like you already ordered those pieces. Edited October 25, 2010 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote

I figured I wanted it the other way around, and was thinking about small pieces with a thin part for the flower. Yes, those pieces are for Indy's tie and Kazim's face. Thanks for all your help! Will you show a WIP or just go WHAM in the entry thread with everything done? Quote
Flare Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Nice work! I like the figures so far, I'd say go ahead for the water and rats Quote

Well, I'll try get it to look somewhat finished, kinda like you did, but yeah, I'll post it here before I enter. In fact, you can already find a WIP pic of my entry if you dig around in my brickshelf. Quote
Skafte Posted October 30, 2010 Author Posted October 30, 2010 Thanks for all kind words and tips, especially to Oky Wan! This is the vig as it turned out eventually: Some more pics: A couple more new shots can be seen on my Flickr Quote
