We're seeing lots of reviews these days on EB, which is very good! :-) However, may i ask to all of you who are thinking of doing any in the future:

1) Check to see if there isn't already a review of the set you're reviewing. If so, please add your contribution to the already existing topic

2) Be creative if you can. Posting pictures of a set, claiming it's a review, is not really what we're hoping for. EB is not a Brickshelf gallery, it's a forum for people to talk about sets, mocs, ... So add comments, thoughts, remarks, whatever, just do something with the photos you're posting...

3) try to take photos of the details you're talking about. We can't really add much if you're talking about a cockpit interior with only photos of the exterior...

To pursue on this topic, I would say that a review is one's view/interprettion of a set. Therefore, I don't mind a couple of reviews on the same set but those reviews need to reflect the member's personnality !!

We don't need the same pic posted like 10 times of one minifig (...).

The personnality is reflected by different points such as:

* personal written comments, ideas, humourous thoughts...

* clear pics taken from different angles

* emphasis on different details / aspects of the sets...

I think what comes to mind when wanting to express thouhts/share pics on a set is this: do I want to do a full extensive review (which is a lot of fun but time consumming - taking pics, chossing pics, sorting pics, uploading pics, creating the written part of the review and deeplinking pics to go with the text) or do I just want to add something to an existing review ??

Be creative and please do take good & clear pics, especially when you post a couple of hem in a review ;-)

Norro,

I haven't looked into them because I am truly not a Castle fan (even if I hade some Castle sets as a kid). Castle nowadays just do not appeal to me ;-)

But since your last post in this thread, I took a closer look in order to give you an answer/my point of view.

I think your reviews are original because you give us your thoughts on the set and the MF's thoughts !! (thats a nice idea ;-) ) + some other goodies as price and all (a good database for fans and collectors).

I would love to see actual pics of the sets and interesting close-ups though, instead of just the box pics ;-)

Hope that helped ;-)

Would you consider my recent castle based ones original enough?

God Bless,

Nathan

yep I would.

Besides, there's no quality check or anything, it doesn't have to be candidate for a Pulizer or a Nobel prize. I think Yoda exagerated just a little bit. Do what you want to do with your review, but it would be nice if it's more than just a series of photos, that's all...

and it seems they're keeping castle forum active, so you won't hear me complain...

i think it was just one individual who kept posting pictures and didn't say much. i am not going to name names but i think we all know who that individual is. ;-) maybe it would be more constructive to pm this individual and say "i like that you are posting reviews. here are the steps you can improve on them..." then proceed to list down the needed items. just my thoughts.

I kind of disagree. I mean, what's wrong with different views.

Nothing, that's not the point. Different views are very well appreciated (if you read the first post again). The point is, if a review for a set/model/whatever already exists, post your view there instead of opening another thread (with blurry pictures).

Excatly :-) Add points to the review already done.

How hard can it be?

If one has new pics to add, well then do so...

Exactly, a review in my opinion is something that is meant to contribute to the boards, to help people decide whether or not they like a set or want to buy it, not just something to do to kill time. That's why it's I think multiple reviews of sets are fine (like with the Batboat for instance), as long as they're significantly different and cover different aspects to give one complete view. I think if someone added their review into that of someone elses, it might get overlooked.

Speaking of that I can't wait till some of the new sets come start coming out

shame! X-D but I'll let you off based on the next sentence...

Sorry for opening the can clearly labeled 'worms'*, I figured this thhread was meant for one user in particular, but I didn't want to be accused of flooding, so I thought I would ask...

Thanks and God Bless,

Nathan

*This obscure reference to an old irish/american saying may not translate well...

nono i didn't start the topic for anybody in particular. I started this because I wanted to prevend EB from getting overflooded by "word-less" picture reviews, that very often don't lead to any discussion what so ever... and out of fear that in the end we wouldn't even be able to control it all. For instance, I can see a moment when the first page of "Lego theater" only has about 5 pic reviews of the isd and another 5 for the sailbarge,... without anything else going on... And unfortunately, we do have members who do not always think or look before they act and sometimes we do have to write things down because some members don't think of ... whatever... without us pointing it out...

so i was basically refering to a phenomenon, not a person...

I have enjoyed the castle reviews very much.

I think reviews of old / classic sets serve a different purpose than the new set reviews. The new set review clearly are to help us decide what to buy or not. I have used them in that way, and they have saved me tons of bucks (for example, I will NOT be getting the new ISD or any of the batman sets so far except maybe the Batmobile).

The reviews of oldies I think is more of a reminiscence of our earlier years, like a bunch of guys talking about their old girlfriends - who was hot and who has not, who put out and who gave you blue balls. This type of review fun just for its own sake, and the castle reviews have been funny in particular (the minifig's point of view is great). I think on occasion I will probably end up buying an old set I didn't have based on a review (I have been looking at 6079 very closely) but that's not the main point.

Being "flooded with reviews" is like having too much Lego. Not really possible, but it can be a bit of a pain to store it all, although clearly truly useless reviews with fuzzy pictures are to be discouraged.

News and reviews are what set Eurobricks apart from all the other general Lego sites.

I was thinking...

Eurobricks has reviews as just one element of the whole forum. How about seperating it from the forum main and have a directory tree to access themed reviews. So, like:

Eurobricks

- General Discussion

-- Theatre

--- Etc

- Reviews Area

-- Theatre

--- Star Wars

--- Batman

--- Etc

-- Castle and Pirates

--- Castle

--- Pirates

-- Etc

--- Etc Etc

honestly, i don't think we need to do anything special, just do what we usually do, and rely upon a little bit of self discipline from our members... nothing more than usual... :-$

When all is said and done if people don't like reviews or the way a person does them then simply don't spend time looking at them. As far as reviews go I have to say I like Norro's the best as they list more of the facts such as price and other ratings but he also makes them personal and funny with the figure comments. If I want to see a new set though I check out Yoda's as he takes great pictures and list all the little details.

It is nice to have variety. If someone is making tons of unneeeded reviews admin will let them know.
