lightningtiger Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Every country town in Australia no matter how big or small has war memorial of some sort, mainly to do with WWI - in which we (Australia and not forgetting New Zealand) lost large numbers of men fighting in WWI. Since many of the fallen could never be brought back home, each town errected a statue or stonework with the names of locals who died in the great war. New Mannum is no different....... (Please note it is still a W-I-P, so get ready for updates later on) Things still might change so feedback please if you don't mind, I'm too use to making buildings and small trucks and alike....my worry is the cross - does it look okay ? Keep on remembering ! Quote
michaelozzie Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 This is a great addition to your town and just in time for rememberance day. You are very right about these being in every town in Australia Quote
Hinckley Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Things still might change so feedback please if you don't mind, I'm too use to making buildings and small trucks and alike....my worry is the cross - does it look okay ? Keep on remembering ! I love the shape of the park, I like the layout. I like the tiled ground. I really like that you put a pattern into it. I like when there is thought put into every detail like that. The archway looks a little thin for a stone arch. I would imagine it would crumble in real life. It looks more suited to the geometry of the LEGO bricks than it is to representing a stone entranceway to a park. The cross doesn't look like a cross to me. I think with the Technic pieces, it looks like it's supposed to be ornate, like a Spanish style cross, or something in Old World stone work. It doesn't work for me as a war memorial cross. The base is great. I really like where it's heading, I just think the cross is not great yet. My favorite part, though is the water fountain. Brilliant little bit there. Quote
greg3 Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Looks good to me.... I can imagine it being a nice peaceful place. Are you going to add some poppy wreaths? Every village/town here also has a war memorial, usually a tall obelisk structure with the names engraved around the base. In fact I'm working on one for my village... I might "borrow" some of your ideas!! Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 31, 2010 Author Posted October 31, 2010 Thanks for the replies 'greg3', 'michaelozzie' and of course 'Hinckley' - you're not the only one that's not happy with that cross, but thanks on the other comments too ! True also that arch way is designed to look like stone work, but I'll try and beef it up if I can get the right parts. A cover picnic area with a BBQ also a new public toliet will complete this one - oh yeah more 2x2 tiles ! Keep on watching......keep on remembering ! Quote
Legostein Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Hello! This already looks excellent, and I think this is going to be an outstanding diorama once finsihed. The monument looks nice with the TECHNIC® pieces. On the list for your further additions on the diorama, I would like to add some spotlights around the monument to light it up during the night. Cheers, ~ Christopher Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 31, 2010 Author Posted October 31, 2010 Thanks for comments 'Legostein', that cross has still got me thinking, so tomorrow I'm going to try a series of cross designs and hopefully out of those a cross which looks the part totally can be choosen ! Keep on remembering ! Quote
WhiteFang Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I like the curve front of the park entrance and the display signs by the memorial itself. Although it's only a WIP, but you are off to a very good start. Looking forward to the final product. Quote
The Soup Nazi Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I really like the water fountain. Good luck on this! Quote
prateek Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Best water fountain ever! Great job. That statue is nice too Quote
Mrlegoninja Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 I like the structure if the park. Nice work, wonder to see how it will turn out. Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 31, 2010 Author Posted October 31, 2010 Thanks 'Mrlegoninja', 'The Soup Nazi', 'prateek' and 'WhiteFang' for your very kind comments! I'm going to try to slim down the vertical, by trying to use Technic full bushes on a longer techpin....so it matches. More tiles, that's what I'll buy today.....so updating later on and everyone keep on watching ! Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 31, 2010 Author Posted October 31, 2010 Here's the next cross to try out and I prefer this one.....what do you think ? Wide shot now..... Comments welcome and keep on remembering ! Quote
greg3 Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 It definitely looks better (I've just Googled war memorial and it looks very similar to many of the real life ones).... not sure about the holes in it though, is there a way of covering them or using plain 1x1 bricks? Anyway keep up the good work... looking forward to seeing how it ends up. Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 31, 2010 Author Posted October 31, 2010 Thanks for the comments 'greg3', I'm not sure by adding plates over the holes.....my reason...it will look to top heavy. I'll wait to see what other people say about it before I make any more changes to the cross. Keep on remembering (11 day of the 11 month on the 11th hour)! Quote
lightningtiger Posted October 31, 2010 Author Posted October 31, 2010 As a cross, I like this one better. Thanks 'prateek', I feel this one is a winner, I'll wait for other replies. I'll start work on the public toliet and BBQ area today. Keep on walking in the park. Quote
drevim Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 Like the new cross, LT. Although I'm debating between leaving the technics side arms in the current position, or rotating them 90degrees, although that may be too "old school" looking for a war memorial. All your mocs make me wish midwest USA was more interesting, so I could create a local moc, but how many 32 x 32 baseplates of cornfields do you need.. Quote

Thanks for the comments 'drevim', I wonder what everyone else thinks about those technics pieces current pos. or 90deg. ? Oh, you only need Town Plan and there you have half a mid-west town eh ? Corn fields, mmmm, be interesting to see Lego corn fields ! Keep on watching everyone ! Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 1, 2010 Author Posted November 1, 2010 Update time..... you can see where the BBQ and public toliet areas are going to be, comments welcome and keep on sitting in the park ! Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 1, 2010 Author Posted November 1, 2010 Nice work! Thanks 'Flare' for your kind comment, the toliet will be on the right hand side of the cross with the BBQ area on the left, work starting tomorrow. Keep on waiting ! Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 I had to get this one presentable for tomorrow being the 11th of 11th.....so here's an update.... Here now is the toliet block....you see which one is the gents side eh ? More work of course to be done to the toliet block. Comments welcome and I'm a conformist! ! Quote
prateek Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Wait... Why is there a toilet at a memorial park?! Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 10, 2010 Author Posted November 10, 2010 It's the local public toliet block, needs to there because of the hotel near by. Old soldiers do like a drink.......to toast their fallen mates......lest we forget ! Keep on remembering ! Quote
