Aethersprite Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 That is very cool, and a great link-up. I have watched the Atlantis take off from Cape Canaveral and it is an awesome sight, makes you feel very small. You realize the pun there, with the new Space sets using the Atlantis helmet, right? Anyway, cool stuff! When I first saw the title I thought, "they're going to send a Lego shuttle into deep space?" This explains the return of the Space theme next year. Woohoo! Quote
Aethersprite Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I don't recognize the smaller shuttle and the rover. Are those yet-to-be-revealed sets, or just MOCs? Quote
Hinckley Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Thanks to prateek for the pictures. Check them out and continue the discussion here And, prateek, I did a search. EDIT: On second thought, I'd like to leave the topics separate. That way people can discuss the possibility of other NASA sets and the specific news about the space launch, etc... Quote
bricked one Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 The shuttle looks a bit small, but I'm still buying. Quote
lightningtiger Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Okay, so I'm going to buy all these now.....but why doesn't say NASA on the images we have seen so far, unless the box art will change. Keep on.....looking for Major Tom ! Quote
Fuzzylegobricks Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Hey Guys this news is actually explained more at Brothers-Brick.com here Also lego will be aloud to make sets of nasa for 3 years, and they will be building the 4 new sets in the international space station in February 2011. Keep the excitement up! Quote
LegoDad42 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Wow...this is fantastic. NASA and LEGO. Amazing. Def. want to pick up these sets! Kid's can really up their grades building and doing reports on this. I wonder if the sets will come with booklets to show details and history of each model. Quote
Fuzzylegobricks Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I wonder if the sets will come with booklets to show details and history of each model. i like that idea it was in the town plan and i think some of the 2005-2007-and 2008 sets. great idea 'LegoDad42' Quote
Alywin Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I don't recognize the smaller shuttle and the rover. Are those yet-to-be-revealed sets, or just MOCs? I have the same doubt. Actually, if you look at the second photo, there is a blue plastic box which looks like those used in Educational series, and it has a set number of "968x"! So, any implication regarding any new NASA sets? Quote
Hinckley Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Apologies to grogall for not seeing this topic in the first place. I first saw the news on Brothers-Brick so I credited them for my finding it. Grogall had posted this in the Sci-fi forum and I searched only the Town forum. I have merged the topics and moved them to the Town forum as this will be a LEGO CITY line of products. Thanks again, so much, to grogall for bringing us the news and the excellent pics. Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Very interesting news indeed! Not only the is the possible Lego NASA sets interesting, but the fact that these sets will be actually built in space is a momumental event in Lego history. Now what other toy can boast and say "I have been to space!" Quote
GRogall Posted November 4, 2010 Author Posted November 4, 2010 (edited) Very interesting news indeed! Now what other toy can boast and say "I have been to space!" Well actually Buzz From Toy Story went up with the space shuttle a couple of years ago! and clips of this are on the newly released Toy Story 3 Blue Ray and DVD My story about that here (Upcoming Pixar) Edited November 4, 2010 by grogall Quote
Aanchir Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I don't recognize the smaller shuttle and the rover. Are those yet-to-be-revealed sets, or just MOCs? They're actually from this Dacta set. Anyway, some of those press releases indicated that the LEGOspace.com website will be updated with games, activities, etc. in the coming months leading up to the sets' release I look forward to seeing what LEGO has up their sleeve! Quote
freakwave Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Well if those set would be "certified" to have been in space, I wonder what they would fetch on BL :-) Quote
Tyrann Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I think it's really cool they're teaming up like this. But I'm a little disapointed at the apparent simplicity of the Shuttle(s). Might be because I own the 10213 Shuttle Adventure, but the sets just don't appeal much to me. Especially the larger set. Looks like the entire nose-piece is a solid piece. Quote
Mr. Elijah Timms Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I wonder if they'll get printed bricks-- stickers are hard enough WITH gravity, couldn't imagine putting them on without it Quote
Aanchir Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I think it's really cool they're teaming up like this. But I'm a little disapointed at the apparent simplicity of the Shuttle(s). Might be because I own the 10213 Shuttle Adventure, but the sets just don't appeal much to me. Especially the larger set. Looks like the entire nose-piece is a solid piece. It's actually two solid pieces: an upper piece for the top of the nose, windscreen frame, and cockpit roof, and a lower piece that forms the cockpit floor. A lot of AFOLs complain about its use on aircraft, although it's technically a lot less specialized than the larger 8-wide aircraft nose pieces that were used before, since the 6-wide nose is stylistically compatible with regular slopes (as you can see on this shuttle where the curved cockpit roof meets with the rest of the fuselage). Granted, a lot of AFOLs prefer brick-built noses like the Adventure's, but I've seen just as many AFOLs complain that the Shuttle Adventure's nose is too blocky for LEGO sets in this day and age. Myself, I think the new nose used for next year's shuttle (as well as several helicopters and planes this year) is a wonderful part. When you consider that prior to the 8-wide specialized aircraft nose pieces, jet aircraft were built at the completely infeasible 4-wide, and that almost all of their noses were built the same way anyway, I don't see anything being lost by switching to more aesthetically pleasing shapes. If LEGO can come up with a way to built a smooth, brickbuilt nose for jet aircraft and the like, then by all means they should use it, but I have never seen an AFOL MOC or official set that was able to find that happy medium. And from a play standpoint, I'm far happier with the larger, specialized pieces that allow for a spacious interior and reasonably-sized windows than I am with the Adventure's nose, which while brilliantly designed does not end up looking all that attractive. Just my opinion, of course, but I'm sure there are people who share it. It all comes down to opinion in the end. I'm a big fan of the Adventure, but this new shuttle is also very appealing to me and I look forward to its release. Quote
Front Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I was glad to see the Atlantis suit in white, used in the City line as a space suit. Now it's going to space. Mind you the piece was never engineered for zero gravity. Quote
yumiyoshi Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 This an amazing news! I love the minifig helmet..it's so Red Planet travel! Maybe it has something to do with the new Mars project! Quote
tl8 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 (edited) I joined just to post this. Poking around from the NASA side of things (Spaceflight is my second hobby). Found this page: http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-110410a.html And it revivals, a large Lego ISS. Looks to be up to the current specification (Not hard with only 2 major components remaining). Edit: As far as I can tell it is in the complete configuration. I am not able to confirm that all items that are docked to Node 1 are present, but it seems all others are present. Includes some Soyuz and Progress spacecraft, and the 2 arms (The main one and the one off Kibo) I hope this will be an official set, it looks to awesome not to be :P And now we know what shuttle will be flying, probably. Yeah, I was thinking of the recent Space Shuttle I picked up in July for my son. We'd put it together and Moc a crawler for it and he can research the history of the shuttle since the final launch is soon an this can be his year end Science report. Now with these newer NASA sets...it's be great to include some educational booklets with it. I'm hopin'...;) Quote
Ignited_Impulse Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Does it come with a private sector spacecraft for my NASA minifigures to use? Quote
CommanderFox Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Wow! These do look like pretty decent sets! Thanks for showing tl8 and welcome to EB!! CF Quote
