Thanks for the review, TheBrickster.

Of all the new PQ sets, this was the one I was most looking forward to. Now, I'm not so sure. I had hoped that the 'bullseye' markings were printed but, alas, they are DSS. :hmpf_bad:

I think the bi-plane looks 'okay'...not 'great', just okay. Thanks for including shots from all angles because the box art made it look pretty awesome.

Now, when you say that the prop interferes with the guns, do you mean it HITS the guns, or that the prop passes in front of them? Because, if it's the latter, that's perfectly normal...the guns were timed to shoot between the blades as they passed in front of the barrels. If it's the FORMER...well, that speaks to a major design flaw.

I was looking at picking up two of these sets but, now I'm not so sure.

Love the leather jacket though.

Thanks for the feedback all. I'm glad you like the review. Despite the short and stubby bi-plane, it's still a nice aircraft.

Excellent review again. Thanks TheBrickster.

Thanks for front-paging WF. :classic: Happy Holidays!

Just passes in front of them. Also, it would have been nice for the gun to rotate.

I think the most disappointing thing about this set is the price. While this set does have a lot of rare pieces, it looks too small to be worth $20 USD. Only 125 pieces at this price range isn't exactly the best deal - there are some sets at the same price with twice the amount of pieces. If I were to buy this set, I think I would buy it for the mummy wings, since those seem to be hard to get.

I just built this last night, and I'm pleased with it overall. It's a nice, classically styled set that makes sense in its own context..the flying Horus-helmed mummies placed their treasure too high for Jake, who, in turn, must make a go at it with his little modified bi-plane. IMO, the stickers bring out a little more character to this set. I love ancient stonework, so placing the heiroglyphics on the tower was a no-brainer for me. Jake's bomber jacket is a great period detail; however, it seems to be the only thing he wears throughout the entire theme. Some diversity in torso designs would have been nice, but I digress. While the Spirit of Luis , barring no better explanation, may be a tip of the hat to Charles Lindbergh's famous plane, the wing markings are clearly classic British, and look great against those dark red wings. I'm also curious about the "SMH" on Jake's jacket. With any luck, the theme will continue, hopefully into Greece, and perhaps some of these little details will be revealed.

Overall, I like the little bi-plane for the rounded-ness in the design. The upside-down mounted tommies don't bother me much, as it lends itself to the extended barrel design. It's a cheap design that's easily modded out if one chooses. The two, make it three, areas I'm not crazy about are: 1) no clearance between upper wing and fuselage to allow Jake to see where he's flying; 2) the prop design just doesn't look right to me..it juts too far forward and just doesn't really complement the rest of the design, IMHO; and 3) no instrument panel..instead, Jake gets to look at a yellow technic brick with a + shaped hole, simply b/c it was probably cheaper for LEGO to put two of that piece in the set rather than putting a regular brick in there in a more complimentary color. I'm not a fan of yellow, and I really dislike TLG's annoying use of inappropriate primary colored bricks as structural parts when they clash with the model's overall scheme, so it bugs me a little. He does have a control stick, however.

While small stickers don't bother me, some of the odder shaped stickers , i.e. the rudder stickers in this case, would make life much grander if they were printed. Attempting a symmetrical application on both sides is a maddening task at times.

Thanks to my wife, I have the entire collection. Having not bought any of the original Adventurers Egyptian sets, I've anticipated a return to Egypt for quite some time. Despite a minor irk here and there, IMO, TLG have done a good job.

A great review, thank you very much for doing it.

Getting 2 mummies in the set is nice! Not to happy with the rounded wings on the plane as it makes the plane look "bird like"

Don't know if it's been said yet(I have a limited time to post.)but the stickers say "spirit of Louis",not "spirit of st Louis"!

"Spirit of Luis"

Interesting thought - you're the only one that mentioned this. The SMH really has me wondering.

Good eye - I didn't look at these closely. - stranger still.

I do like how there are no printed pieces except for the 2x2 round flat plates. Those should have the printed targets especially since they've printed those in the past. Small pieces generally should be printed if those same unprinted pieces are easily available elsewhere.

I feel the large pieces are actually ruined when printed because you can't use them for a different theme. So knowing that I can reuse those columns makes me like this set more. The brick red pieces are to die for.

A very nice review!

Although this is mere speculation, the initials 'SMH' on the back of Jake's jacket could be the initials of the minifig or set designer. I believe I've heard that TLG has been allowing designers to place 'easter eggs' like this on several of the Collectible Minifigures. Perhpas this practice has extended beyond that line?

Alas, unless there's an insider among us, or someone is aware of a designer with these initials working at LEGO today, we will never know...

Thanks for the review! From the boxart, I somehow hadn't even noticed that it included the obelisk. I was going to get this for the figures and the printed 2x2 round tiles -- though now that I know they're just stickers :hmpf_bad: I don't think I'll buy it. I think this is my least favorite of the Pharaoh's Quest sets.

As for those lovely minifigures, I'll wait for this: http://lego.wikia.com/wiki/853176_Pharaoh%27s_Quest_Battle_Pack

Thanks for the great review Brickster!

The set looks alright, but I agree, the Biplane is alittle to stubby, but I really like the colour, love that dark red!

Im not a big fan of the obelisk. Its kind of boring.

But apart from that, not a bad set, love the figs!

I have to say I don't quite buy your criticism of the bi-plane. I like it's more playable than realistic design, and I think it's size gives it a lot of character, something some sets in new themes starkly lack.

However, I can see why some would not exactly adore it.

I'll be getting this set though. Seems to me like a cool plane with great minifigs and some interesting pieces.

Good review and such, but I do have 1 thing to point out.

The propellers DO sweep in front of the guns in real life. Early on, there was just a special metal bracket or something on the propeller strong enough it just deflected the bullets  . In later planes, they timed the guns to the engine, so you shot between revolutions  .

EDIT: Here it is: Interrupter gear-wikipedia

I just did a quick google search to show you some examples of real planes  :

(forgive me if the size is off, I didnt check that, it may be scaled on the websites.)

...I do appreciate the review though! And hope this fact doesn't come off in any way rude. Just stating the history folks!

I have to laugh at that description on the product page..."several new weapons". Umm...I see ONE new weapon, plus a spear. Not exactly "several" by any stretch of the imagination.

Totally agree. I think the plane is an awesome set and a pretty neat addition to this line. All of the sets have excellent playability in mind which in the end matters most for its end consumer. I am tempted to get this set today but TRU's markup makes me not want to get it :(

Awesome review though, the bomber jacket is pretty sweet.

Thanks for the review! It was good, although I would have liked a few more pictures (for example, the plane with the minifigure in it, or a closer picture of the grabbing arm). I think I like the looks of the set a bit better than you do, and may pick it up if I have enough money. I do think it odd that they chose to include a window, though--it only draws attention to the fact that there's not a place for Jake to look out.

Sure, it's not as large and detailed as the IJ bi-plane, but for an affordable little set, it looks very good. Much better than the old adventurers planes anyway, which may have been cheaper, but also more <insert that tiresome argument>.

Out of curiosity, how were the Adventurers planes <insert that tiresome argument>?

Overall I have average feelings about this set. The color scheme is nice and I'm really digging the pilot minifig but the flaws seem to outweigh the good points :sceptic:

The Lego company could have made the design of the plane better. Wider/longer ect.

I'll buy it, but only because I'm a bi-planes fanatic.
