I'm all over this theme. Absolutely love it. The Horus headdress is fantastic and I'm salivating over the Anubis head piece and scarab shields. the wings, new mummy prints just awesome. Johnny Thunder's desert adventure it definitely isn't but awesome it definitely is.

I don't get the gun thing too. Not only are there more, a good half of them are tommy guns! And we all love those...right?

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone; it's just hard for me to believe that the great pharaoh's last request was it to be buried in a tomb that will shoot his corpse halfway across the desert at the first sign of intruders.

I'll have you know it is in my will for an ejection seat to be placed in my coffin...along with live bees and individually wrapped candies....

Bahaha. That would actually be pretty cool.

It wasn't- the slaves waited 'till he croaked then put that together themselves. They only bandaged him so he would stop falling apart after they 'tested' the function out a few times.

:P

Back on Topic:

Those Anubis heads are droolworthy. I won't have anywhere near the money for the pyramid after I buy a few Atlantis sets and the race for the staff, but perhaps bricklink will pull through with somewhat reasonable prices.

What was the deal with the old mummies anyway? Were they undead? They looked like it, and the box arts seemed to suggest that, but the story never involved undead mummies or anything like that. :look:

Those are probably preliminary.

They were an occupational hazard lol.

I think they were there to add ot the danger, whereas the Pharaoh's quest series is focused on the battle between humans and the undead.

Hmm. I rather like the coffin piece in the pyramid set (and it's got a gold cover!), but I don't think it comes in any other set.

I may get the pyramid depending on its price. About one third of the actual pyramid is just the baseplate, so I wonder if it will be in my price range. Those Anubis helmets (or heads, but hopefully helmets) are quite nice as well. It better be a full pyramid...

I feel like you've strongly disliked every action theme to come out in the last several years that wasn't Wild West.

Sorry, but your argumentation is completely wron, Algernon.

Western was no action theme but a historical theme.

Which I really do not like is when TLG mixs up historical and action themes.

I really don't like Atlantis - but it's ok since it has not enough serious historical elements included. So that's no problem.

But Pharaoh's Quest includes that many great architecture and accessory that it is a shame that TLG didn't design it as a historical theme (similar to the one of Playmobil) or at least as a re-design of the Adventurers sets of the late ninetees.

But making a continuation of Atlantis out of it is really, really disappointing.

And one thing more:

If TLG released a new Western theme, this would for me be a dream becoming reality!

But if this Western theme included oversized animals and ugly stuff like that, I wouldn't like it, too.

I have to disagree with many of you guys, in that despite the big monsters this theme still offers something quite unique to the LEGO themes. If you prefer historic themes and aren't so much into the action-elements, you can quite easily remove the mummies from the pyramid set, for example, and get a great display for archeologists or explorers.

In general that's a good idea, Sandy.

But when I buy sets I want them to be (not 100 percently but in a decenet part) to be like I'd like them to be. MOCing is the one thing - but official sets are something other. I really dislike to buy a set and mod it.

Sure, none of these sets are really 100% authentic or historically accurate, but did someone really expect TLG to produce a theme like that? The target audience - little boys - love monsters and conflict, so without them the sets wouldn't sell.

Sorry to have to disagree with you here, Sandy.

But the Roman and Egypt sets which Playmobil released were complete historical themes with big historical correctness. And (at least from which I know from Germany) these sets were sold very well. So why shouldn't historical Lego sets wihout fantasy stuff be sold very well, too?!

Plus the success of the new Pirates and the new Kingdoms theme shows that kids do not necessarily want and/or need ugly creatures. They even buy the sets without these elements. How much playability a set includes does absolutely not have to do something about how many, big and/or ugly creatures there are included.

That I wanted to say for an addition.

But now I think we should stop this discussion since I don't want to corrupt the happiness of those of you who like this theme.

But nevertheless I wanted to give you and TLG a piece of my mind of that and why I don't like action themes like Pharaoh's Quest.

I think the reason Lego is going this route with the theme as opposed to a historic theme is because the historic options don't look too good. Thinking of the kingdoms sets, no particular European nation can be pinpointed as the nation from the sets. They all look Anglo-Saxon/ French but there are no clear correlations or religious elements involved. This isn't so for Egypt; so Lego would not make sets that single out nations and pin them against an enemy. (Except licensed sets) And for that matter who would the enemy be??

Depending on the period they can pin them against middle eastern nations, or Romans and that's a whole lot of politics. Not to mention they'd have to make a Roman theme also. ( I also don't think Lego wants to copy Playmobil's themes exactly)

If they went the Adventures route, and simply introduced a group of "evil" explorers it would be a bit Indiana Jones'ish and they already had a theme like that. I think this is their break from the constrains of the old Adventures and the Indiana Jones series.

Is it perfect, no. I really dislike the statues coming alive business, but the explorers are great, the building and accessories are amazing, and if they want to give us a whole bunch of mummy figs in cheap sets, I say go for it. I could always get a whole bunch of collectible mini figure Pharaohs and swap out some parts and make an old Egyptian army.

That's how it is with most themes, I have yet to buy a set I/m fully happy with so I change things around; for all its worth this is a great theme and I hope they continue it for at least as long as Atlantis was out. :classic:

No, I remember you voicing similar complaints about SP3 and just about every new-theme topic I've seen you post in.

I don't believe the line between "historical" and "action" was ever as clearly defined as you think it was... when's the last time LEGO came out with a purely historical theme? The 2009 Pirates was an action theme. Castle is an action theme... or "Fantasy" if you want to be specific, but it's definitely action-oriented. Is your idea of a purely historical theme one that doesn't involve conflict? If that's the case, then... there were never any historical themes.

I'll grant you that the sets here are definitely a little far-fetched. The flying mummies and living Sphinx in particular. But the idea of action-oriented sets has been with LEGO for awhile (and I can guarantee you that if LEGO came out with another Western theme, you would be making the exact same complaints you're making now... violence sells and the Wild West is definitely violent).

Seriously, there are a lot of things you could say about this theme, like how busy all of the sets look or the absurdity of flying mummies dueling 19th-century biplanes (I happen to think it's awesome but I can understand seeing it as completely stupid) but if your major complaint is mixing history and action, I'd recommend you look into other hobbies. That's a trend that LEGO doesn't seem likely to veer away from anytime soon.

Well I have to say that in part I agree but, in part I disagree. Everybody has different opinions and I can see yours but, I personally like to just mod my sets. I hated the old Lego swords so I went to brickarms.com. I also disliked the new bucket helmets so, I went to brickforge and bought theirs. I did not particularly like all of the Indiana Jones sets so I did not get them all. While I would prefer a historically accurate set to what we have here I will say that I still see a lot of potential in this theme.

And another thing I want to point out. Neither the Lego pyramid or the Playmobil pyramid are really accurate in terms of what the actually pyramids would have looked like. The real pyramids were not multi-colored in any way and they did not have big statues of pharaohs chiseled on the sides. They were just plain, white with a gold painted point at the top. Not really a big seller. :classic:

The Anubis statues could benefit from using the long Toy Story arms and legs. I think they'd look better as taller figures. A little more threatening.

With one of those kilty skirt things. And in Tan for statues...

That would be really cool...

Historical sets don't sell! That's why LEGO makes things with "action" in them, LEGO admits that themselves. They are a company that needs to make money.

Also If no one likes the undead mummies, then just pretend they are dead, problem solved.

Adventures Desert years ago also had mummies and crazy "dead" things too, this is the same, but LEGO now goes more into the story mode of things.

I think that if you don't like the undead mummies, than you should use the helmet, sword and shield on a different minifigure to make a living egyptian army to use in an historical setting. That is what I plan on doing with my mummies! Also, do you think the mummies with wings have a different helmet mold than the normal one? It is dark blue, and it looks like it doesn't have a stud on the front. It would be silly of TLG to make a new mold for it, but it looks like they did.

Why would it be silly. I like the new mold. It destinguishes the pharaoh's headdress from the regular grunts headdress. Great for making Lego Egyptian armies. :sweet:

Personally, I like the mummies. I really don't look for how historically accurate sets are, because that doesn't really matter to me (with the exception of licensed themes, but those aren't exactly historical).

As for the new mould, I think I may know why there is a new one. Looking at the other helmets, there's a part that extends down the minifig's back. Maybe the helmet here has got the back part removed to fit in the wings easier.

Why the stud thing is missing, though, I don't know. I would rather have the gold version only to have the stud, because it looks more suited for leader mummies (generally, I assume the gold-plated characters to be the leaders ). Or at least a combination of the stud and no stud version for the more common black helmetted ones. Wait, there are in fact black versions of the studless helmet in the "sphinx" set! In this case, I assume it just to be a variant.

To me it looks like the new dark blue headdress has an eagle or falcons beak. Makes them look like the Egyptian Falcon god Horus. Could be why its only the winged mummies that are wearing the new headdress.
