Hinckley Posted December 9, 2010 Author Posted December 9, 2010 I never built anything with a brick count limit, how do you guys manage to do that? I find this rule very disturbing as I never paid any attention to how many bricks are needed to make a scene look nice... Any advice would be appreciated! My first bit of advise is don't take it so seriously. Being disturbed by this is a waste of your energy. I think I'm going to build the Quidditch stadium from the 4th book. That's a great scene. But in that way, 1000 pieces are not enough Oh well, there's plenty more to choose from. Does the chosen scene have to take place during Winter Break? Read the rules. Can I make a Quidditch Field? I'd like to know NOW, because it is actually part of Hogwarts (I'm already working on it!). Yes, make it. But why are so many people going to build Quidditch fields, pitches or stadiums? There's already a Quidditch set! Use your imagination and create something new! People will most likely pass over entries that resemble existing sets and vote on something else. Be unique. Yeah, sorry for the confusion; I didn't see that Hinck wrote that and was assuming it had to be something during winter break. Learn how to read. The rules are there for a reason. Read them! Especially if you have a question. Quote
Oky Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Learn how to read. The rules are there for a reason. Read them! Especially if you have a question. Geez, I said I was sorry. And I did read the rules, several times in fact, but the title of the contest and the first sentence of the description are rather misleading. Quote
indyman09 Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Jep, I do mean the world cup stadium. But that's impossible with only 1000 bricks. So I'm just doing a small part. Thanks for helping! Quote
Lord Embo Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 (edited) Since the Maze(Tri-Wizard Tournament 3rd Task) isn't inside Hogwarts Castle but outside of it, are we allowed to make it? If so, I'm in! Lord Embo Edited December 9, 2010 by Lord Embo Quote
Admiral Ron Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 I am so entering this! Just waiting for the Bricklink orders to come in. Quote
Clone OPatra Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Since the Maze(Tri-Wizard Tournament 3rd Task) isn't inside Hogwarts Castle but outside of it, are we allowed to make it? Yes, you can. Anything that isn't the Castle is fine. Quote
pif500 Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Good idea for this contest, where is the entries topic? Quote
Etzel Posted December 9, 2010 Posted December 9, 2010 Good idea for this contest, where is the entries topic? Why don't you read the rules to find out? 12. Create a separate thread for each entry. Subject should start with WINTER BREAK: (which means it should end with the name of your creation. Format "WINTER BREAK: Name of Creation" Quote
Vindice Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 MOCing hell! What a great contest! I've just started my first MOC which will be a large minifig scale hogwarts for my son. I'm actually going to do a blog from the start to finish (which will probably be a year away!) there are a lot of possibilities for this contest and as much as i'd love to win that Diagon alley, I'm most looking forward to seeing what MOC's people produce. It's been discussed on here already how the future of the HP line is uncertain so I think MOC'ing is the best way we can keep this going. I've shortlisted some possibilities and now I've just got to convince the wife to let me make another brick order! Bad timing considering she just authorised a big one last week! Quote
Alibabo Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 And can I build something, that happened in the story or in the film, or just somebody's house, shop or anything else? Corse, it must be is winter, not? And my last question: do I have to buid a building, or I can build a scene too? Thanks, and sorry, if something is in the rules... I cant read and speak english very well, so easy answers please Quote
Matn Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 It doesn't have to happen in the series, it just has to be a place or building in the universe of Harry Potter. The contest really focuses on buildings. And there are so many buildings you could make because the world is filled with magical places ranging from dark prisons and wizarding hospitals to bureaucratic ministries and majestic mansions, you'll definitely find a good choice. And don't forget all the houses the trio has visited throughout all the books, there are plenty of interesting ones. And no, it doesn't have to be situated in the winter. The name is just because the contest goes on in the winter. Anyway, I've started building on mine but it's going to take a while I think. Not wanting to destroy any of my earlier buildings, I'll also have to make an order. I'm trying to think out clever ideas because I base myself on the film rendition of the building, which is pretty wicked to be made in LEGO. I'm looking forward to the first entry. Quote

And can I build something, that happened in the story or in the film, or just somebody's house, shop or anything else? Corse, it must be is winter, not? And my last question: do I have to buid a building, or I can build a scene too? Thanks, and sorry, if something is in the rules... I cant read and speak english very well, so easy answers please Well, if you can read and write those questions, you should be able to find the answers in the rules. They use the same words you have just used. Doesn't have to be winter, has to be a building, from the books. Quote
LEGO Humor Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 If I make two buildings from one site, is it allowed? For example, if I make Flourish and Blotts and Florean Fortescue's shops in Diagon Alley, does that count, or can it only be one building/shop? Quote
Hinckley Posted December 22, 2010 Author Posted December 22, 2010 If it's under 1000 pieces, fine. Quote
JimBee Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 I'm in the process of building my entry, and it did occur to me that I'll probably need to scale it down in order to fall under the 1000 piece limit. So my question is, can I post a non-contest entry MOC that is a larger version of my entry as well? The reason I ask is because even if the larger MOC is not an entry, it might influence a few votes. Should I wait until the contest is over? Quote

lakers88 Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 (edited) yes, its in the book. You replied on an earlier post that it had to be a building. Just wondering. Edited December 30, 2010 by lakers88 Quote

Always good to ask to be sure. In this case the answer is, of course. Is it a LEGO piece? Why wouldn't it be allowed? Quote
The Cool Minifig Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 May we do more than one building attatched to a baseplate? Quote
Hinckley Posted January 12, 2011 Author Posted January 12, 2011 May we do more than one building attatched to a baseplate? It should be only one building. But if a location is two buildings, I may let it pass on a case by case basis. If you are doing Tom Riddle's house, you may put the house and an outlying shed in the same creation. Or if there are two stores in Hogsmeade that are attached, but you can't build the entire town of Hogsmeade for your entry. Quote
JimBee Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Does the extension of HP month mean the deadline of this contest is extended, too? Edit: Sorry, never mind. The two contests have the same deadline. Quote
CorneliusMurdock Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 In the course of building my entry, I've been building it in LDD as well to keep track of piece count. Is it okay to put the lxf file in my entry post or should I hold off on that till after the contest? Hopefully, I can finish in a few more days and can start work on my Original Wizard entry. Quote
