Bfahome Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) Probably just some kind of adhesive stuff they use to keep the set planted, like they do at some toy fairs. Anyway the tripod is my least favorite AC set, because I think the leg design clashes with the smooth UFO aesthetic. And their placement is off-center, something which usually bothers me. But that's just me. Edited March 5, 2011 by Bfahome Quote
krystalKING Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I think the tripod invader separates! If you look at the prototype picture the top facing forward,in the official pic the top is on backwards! Quote
prateek Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I think the tripod invader separates! If you look at the prototype picture the top facing forward,in the official pic the top is on backwards! It's Lego, so it's obviously able to detach From what I can tell, it swivels around. Quote
Delta 38 Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) No, one of the legs of the tripod had what appeared to be real bubble stuck to it in some of the HQ pics. Ah, okay. That was probably unintentional, though. It's Lego, so it's obviously able to detach From what I can tell, it swivels around. It might be more logical for the laser-thing on the tripod to move around, while the cockpit stays in the same position. At least one part of the tripod should move like that, anyway... Algernon Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Anyway the tripod is my least favorite AC set, because I think the leg design clashes with the smooth UFO aesthetic. I don't see that at all, and I'm usually the one who gets in a tizzy about aesthetics. I think the tripod has a great look. But of course you're entitled to your opinion. I wouldn't be surprised if the tripod could separate from the body, after all it's a pretty logical feature considering that the cockpit looks like it could be a standalone vessel. The thing that bothers me most about the tripod invader is the trans-neon-green bubble sitting directly behind the trans-clear cockpit. It feels... inconsistent. But I can easily get over that since it's still one of the theme's standouts (and who doesn't want a War of the Worlds-esque invasion force? I'll take four.) As others have said, though, the Earth Defense HQ has been growing on me and it's probably my most-anticipated set. June can't come quickly enough. Quote

But of course you're entitled to your opinion. I agree, and I'm also usually a stickler for stylistic consistency. After all, the tripod legs kind of match the "framework" look of the mothership, so it's not totally inconsistent with other alien craft. It's kind of reminiscent of how Spyrius had two main vehicle "archetypes"-- robots and flying saucers (with a few tiny speeders)-- but there was enough unifying them that you could tell they were part of the same faction. Except here, there are even greater ties between the styles: everything belonging to the aliens uses the same sort of bubble-cockpits and circular structure, for the most part, and the color schemes tend to be organized in roughly the same way for every set. I'll take four.) The worst part is that it's not even Trans-Neon Green (Transparent Fluorescent Green). The bubble/pod behind the body is actually Trans-Bright Green, the color introduced last year in Atlantis-- and thus doesn't match any other Alien Conquest parts besides the "brains" of the Alien Pirate and Alien Commander. All the other Alien Conquest lasers, antennae, and so forth are Trans-Neon Green. Quote

But of course you're entitled to your opinion. I think it's just what I thought I saw in the first pics vs. what I see in the high res pics. I didn't notice the "heel spikes" or whatever they are at first so they sort of look out of place to me now. Of course, that's not to say it's a bad set, I just don't think it's quite as good as the others in this line. Quote

Although I'll agree that it could benefit from a few mods. I kind of wish the "body" was tilted forward more like the actual tripods from the movies: Although I'm not surprised that the menacing look was toned down a bit to keep it kid friendly. The 2005 War of the Worlds may have been a crappy movie, but the tripods themselves were terrifying. I'd love to see a more "serious" alien invasion theme sometime. Artanis I Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Whenever I think of War Of The Worlds, I think of the Jeff Wayne musical, and the associated artwork. UUULLAAAHHHHHHH!!! and that theme is now in my head... Quote
user Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 I'd love to see a more "serious" alien invasion theme sometime. Doubt it'll happen, it seems lego themes lately are never serious. I don't blame them since it's a childrens toy after all but I don't see that happening soon. Quote
Tony Almeida Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Well I like the designs of the Earth HQ and the chopper, but the kiddy colour schemes aren't really doing much for me. Quote

LEGOMAN132 Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I think the color schem looks kind of like classic space. Thats me though. Quote

Yeah in the interview about the approach to targeting girls, (there's a thread somewhere), the Lego guy said adults would just have to accept whatever they do for kids. In other words, take what they produce and modify it to your own tastes If you want it more scary or adult. I prefer the cartoony child friendly approach. The expressive minifig faces and brighter colours bring it to life. I'm sure that has to be a big contributory factor to the upsurge in Lego love in recent years. Quote
stayunspoiled Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 I am very much looking forward to this theme, I just hope it blends well with SP3 when I actually pick them up... Quote

The Crazy One Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 If only Battle Field Los Angeles realease date coinsided with this lines release. It would be so perfect. Quote
benhead Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Neeto!New parts! The color schemes on the earth vehicles are`nt quite to my liking, they should have been army green or navy blue. But I like the mini figure blasters and the new windshields. There better be a military battle tank later in the theme, not a half tank with wheels but a full tank with treads, even a troop transport with 6-8 foot soldiers that can sit inside the rear would be great! Quote
Artanis I Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 War of the Worlds, The Musical!?!? Lovely! You haven't heard of it? The theme was quite well-known I thought, although 1978 is a while ago so I imagine it would've missed some people's radar. Full album version. There was a radio version, it was on many instrumental compilations over the years... Sorry to get a bit off topic again... Quote

The theme was quite well-known I thought, although 1978 is a while ago I recognized the tune instantly but had no idea where it came from. I was born in June 1978 so despite actually breathing for at least half of the year I might have missed a cultural event or two. Quote
Esser-Z Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I am in love. Lego Scifi is consistently my biggest love, and this is no exception. The new human armored troopers look great. Space Police and Collectible Cyborg (grr at never finding the previous Minifigure waves) have totally sold me on the new helmet piece. It's a great powered armor sort of thing. Liking the new human gun mold quite a bit, too. Be nice to have some molded weapons that aren't just the Star Wars ones (not that I have anything against more traditional scifi armaments). Set by set, 7049 looks like a nice little impulse buy. Liking the new alien head quite a bit, and I've always liked multi-minifig impulse level sets. Minifigs are the best thing. Impulse pricing might make it my default 'get more than one for more minifigs!' set. 7050 is a nice looking little truck, and another pair of interesting minifigs. Not much to say. 7051 looks incredible. Lego has always been great at mecha and walkers, with no exception here. I'm very interested in the headsquids. 7052 is actually the set I'm least interested in from the line. True, the farmer is a great looking civilian minifig, but I'm not quite sold on the ship. It's nice enough, but not super exciting like the others, at least in the official photos. In general, I'm quite fond of the blue coloring for the military vehicles. It's sharp. 7065, on the other hand, is beautiful. It's nice to see the Cthuluman legs being used again. The alien leader is a fantastic looking minifig, and the reporter looks cool. Spinning ring is glorious. Really wish it had some traditional minicraft gimmick. I've always loved those. 7066 is hands down the set I want most. The truck looks very tough and well armed. Nice and solid looking. Nice looking little fighter jet, too, and as I said above. I love docking vehicle gimmicks. Nothing really notable about the small saucer. Now, the minifigs... Doctor looks nice, soldiers always good--and one's an elusive female minifig, yay. One of the cool looking aliens and... a cyborg alien pirate! That triggers more than one layer of awesome. I picture him buddying around with the Minifigures Cyborg. 7067 is a really sweet vehicle, too. Nice assault chopper-jet. I love the splitting alien pod vehicle, too. Quote
Vindicare Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 I'm looking forward to getting 7051, putting it right in the middle of my city and causing panic to the citizens! Quote
Esser-Z Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Oooh. Now that IS a good idea. I was just going to integrate it with the rest of the mecha (mostly Exo-Force and MOC, with some exceptions) in my Space And Related set-up. Hmm. Perhaps it'll be time to rebuild some of my town and set it back up. Been awhile since I cycled the display table... Quote
Tony Almeida Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 How exactly are the color schemes kiddy? I think the color schem looks kind of like classic space. Thats me though. Well now that you bring that up, I suppose it works out with all things considered. I just preferred the colour scheme and direction that Space Police took last year. Quote
seba Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 This theme is cool.I am probably going to get most of these sets. If i can get all sets i want i am gonna get: Alien encounter, tripod invader, ufo abduction, alien mothership and earth defence hq. The "story line" is bad.Aliens that have more knwledge than humans stealing humans knowledge. There are some awesome new molds too. Quote
