Hello im new here. Ive been watching this topic since it first began and i only decided to join now because Im quite lazy.

For the first thing id like to point out is a change of logo

:wacko:I cant seem to post the picture of the updated version of the logo but just crop a logo from one of the toyfair pics and compare it to the original. So am I right or am I right? Also this has probobly been comfirmed but to the people who dont beileive, in the UFO ubduction or watever the heck it was called (sorry im not that good at remembering set names ) On the box it says Abduction function AND light plus I read something, somewhere, something about a guy who I have heard that works at Lego (some one mentioned this by the way)(forgot his name)(I sometimes buy those magazines for AFOLS at the Lego store) which this guy was talking about where Im not sure if he was intervewing the guy at LEGO (sorry my memory is quite a disaster ) where he said he saw the set or something and mentioned lots of small peices in the capture function. That rules out magnets, so im wondering if you fly over the fig, and press a button on the ship or what, and an arm grabs the fig (im not talking about the mothership). Im not very siked about having to fly close to the fig fig, but then again magnets wouldnt have a good pull with the level i wanted to abduct the minifigs, plus that means you could only abduct the farmer. Like I say, "If you just think a little, you can learn a lot". So any suggestions on the function?

Welcome bricker! :classic: You really don't have to be so specific with your comments or else it gets really confusing. I know what you mean though. I'm guessing that there's some sort of claw or shovel type object that comes down and grabs the minifig kinda like in the Pharaoh's quest bi-plane set, I can't really think of another way. :look:

That giant mothership is daft - huge but empty, takes up a lot of space for something that's basically just a cockpit

A cockpit with a rotating outer ring, a nifty sound effect, and a mechanism for abducting people, to name just those features we know about. If you haven't done so already, you should check out the ToyFair video; it makes (some of) the set's functionality clear in a way the photos don't, in particular the fact that there's more to that outer ring structure than just taking up space.

*sigh* I'm sadly more excited about the civillian figs than the aliens. Though I do like the aliens. I'm in love with the farmer and reporter and have to have the businessman. Which is grand because it seems to me that they'll be fairly abundant on bricklink while people army build aliens.

I agree. The civilians have printing that are just as good as what you get from the Collectible Minifigures.

Yes, but I think that the function will be far more advanced than as seen with the bip plane. The bip plane just has a foold out type of thing if I recall. I expect quite alot from the UFO. Im alittle bit disappointed that we keep getting claws, but it seems theres just no other good way :cry_sad: magnets havent been used by LEGO for a while, so im guessing they decided to completely stop the use of them, plus theres only so much distance you have to abduct a minifig :sceptic: .

Maybe a magnet dangling on a string would work, just have to implant a little magnet on the minifig somehow (or as an attachment around the neck?).

Hell, even velcro would work xD

It seems to me this will be the most popular theme in a few years. Is it just me or is the LEGO Group finally listening to fans and improving the set designs??

2011 seems like the year for answered prayers. Amen!

I must say in all my years of living... 2011 has got to have the best LEGO sets in history. No joke. I love everything. Im happy LEGO made the alien pet attatch to minifig heads without a stud. Since I was real small, I always wondered to me why LEGO would'nt make helmets like that. I was pretty stupid back then but LEGO has finally answered my silent call. People say that the alien pets suck out your brains but I know for a FACT, that LEGO would never do that. The theme is called Alien Conquest, not Alien Destructoids or watever. I know that the alien pets are used to control minifigs MINDS. Thats the point of the conquest.

Wow. I'm incredibly excited about this theme. It's not without it's "faults", but as an AFOL I've sort've gotten used to the idea that I'm not necessarily the key demographic. Reality is I'd buy all the kiddyish sets even if I'm not 100% into the designs mainly for new figs, parts, etc. and then end up modifying or MOCing anyway. With that said, there's some POTENTIAL in these sets, moreso than I've felt about Power Miners or Atlantis.

That truck is amazing - perhaps a bit kiddie, maybe needs modding - but it's a superb APC design. Think it's the set I'm most looking forward to this year

Agreed. And yes, I think we're relating on the kiddie-but-with-potential thing. The blue really reminds me of classic space sets, but now we're getting a nice big truck. The playability is through the roof, with the detaching sections, the alien containment cells (sorry, my German's rusty), the launching spacecraft, etc. Did I mention it's a big truck!?!

Agreed. I also agree that at first glance, it's definitely a big cockpit, but the rotating bit is nice and there's some great pieces there for round building. Love it.

I hope this is true, thanks Fugazi and Sajer. I would love to see another space theme, and more aliens :alien::classic::yoda: I really hope they can be friends with the humans again like Life on Mars or at least each faction has both humans and aliens. The colonial narrative of Atlantis and Power Miners gives me little hope of this though...

Thank you. 'Nuff said. An unfortunately reality I've learned to lament, though there's always hope if we keep pointing it out. I have a baby boy on the way. This sort of narrative is definitely something he and I'll have to have some fun thinking about critically.

All that said, I'm super excited about 2011 LEGO. We're getting some pretty fun stuff from TLC.

I realized last night (should have realized sooner, what with my member title) that the new blue color for the Earthling spacesuits is probably one of two unreleased blue colors-- 321 and 322-- that were on the LDD color palette in version 3. They can still be downloaded in Version 4-- I recommend my Complete LDD Color Chart, which includes both of them (along with four other unreleased colors) in the bottom row.

It should be noted that color 325 also seems to be making its debut this summer, in Collectible Minifigures Series 5. The fitness trainer has a lavender boom-box that seems to be that color. Thus, the rest of those six unreleased colors are probably just over the horizon. I expected them to make their debuts in a designated "girls' theme", not in a Space theme or in the collectible minifigures, but it seems that with the rumored upcoming "girls' theme" delayed until at least next year, some of these colors are making their debut this year anyhow.

Im not sure I said this before, but if I did sorry, the logo has been updated, look at the new pics of the boxes and compare the logo to the old one, a bit diff right?

Regarding the abduction feature of the UFO set: i think it will use transparent cylinder pieces and a light brick that will give a sort of "tractor beam" effect - the cylinder would close around the minifgure (similar to the SP III Prison pods)and light up, giving the impression the the figure was trapped in a beam of light.

Of course, it would have to retract back up and somehow hold the minifigure, and given the price range of the set, it's unlikely there'll be much of a complex mechanism. But maybe it'll be something like that.

Since all the cool kids are doing it...

Whatever abduction mechanism is inside the UFO Abduction set has to be able to fold up inside the underbelly of the UFO. That rules out anything too grand or large. However, this is likely a $30 set, and it's not terribly large, so the abduction feature is going to be its main selling point. So I suspect that the designers were given however many technic parts they needed to make it work. So given the reports that it involves many tiny pieces and that it's, to quote Huw, "clever", I supect a rather complex but also compact technic mechanism is in the offing.

From here it's mere conjecture, but given that we see what is clearly a new, strong, long type of clear piece in the boxart for the Podrace set, I'm going to make a leap of logic and say that that piece will also be present in this set, perhaps as an X-arm type of extender controlled by a knob somewhere on the ship (or if they're feeling really clever, by spinning the outer rim of the ship itself!) As for grabbing the minifigure, again this is mere conjecture, but the solution that presents itself readily to my mind is putting a pair of the 2 x-axle holder rubber pieces on the ends of the extenders.

So if I'm right, you would twist the outer rim, the red light would turn on, the clear arms would extend down from the underbelly with a scissoring motion, grab the farmer using friction from the rubber pieces, and then fly away. If I were a Lego designer this would probably be what I would do, but then again I'm not one, so I'm probably completely wrong.

Hopefully the NY Toy Fair can put all of this conjecture to rest

Unfortunately, examining the box art of the UFO Abduction set doesn't yield many clues as to how the abduction function works... I imagine its something fairly simple, since the UFO isn't terribly large, but I do notice it's slightly taller than average (possibly to make room for the abduction mechanism?).

The more I see this theme, the more I like it. Just about every set I've gotten a decent look at is awesome, even the smaller "throwaway" models look worth picking up. I can't remember the last time LEGO Space has gotten a theme with such consistent quality. I can see why the mothership is somewhat more hit-or-miss but frankly I'd pick it up just for the alien Emperor- he looks awesome. Same for the Earth Defense HQ, the Alien cyborg has got to be the coolest minifig LEGO's come up with in years.

The UFO Abduction and Tripod are definitely the standouts though. They look to be reasonably priced yet incredibly fun models.

I'd like to get a better look at the jet-copter encounter. From I can tell from the box art, it includes TWO small UFO fighters. That's new.

I probably missed something, but where has it been said that there's an actual mechanism? I'd think it would just be a light brick or something to create the effect of the classic conical tractor beam.

On Brickset.

I think the abduction feature will be made with a technic brick with holes in it and a piece of bubblegum on the tip. And the bubblegum lights up!

Very funny.

Excuse the ignorance, but where on Brickset? I checked the product page and all it said was that it contains a light brick.

hate it when this happens :sadnew: *sigh* If you accually LOOKED at the box carefully at the bottom corner, where it says in HUMAN words, that there IS a "ABDUCTION FUNCTION AND LIGHT EFFECT" (EXACT WORDS).

KEY WORD: AND

ALSO this has been discussed a few times and I understand sometimes people dont look at a topic sometimes but you keep on asking for needless proof.
