vexorian Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 (edited) It seems the UFOs are going to put a certain 1997 theme to shame. Plus you wonder why didn't those UFO have at least one tripod. Too bad the only tripod is from a rather large box. I just hope this theme arrives to town, 2010's SP3 police didn't and I guess that's because they'd rather sell the over expensive SW sets >( The minifigs are a low point in this theme in my opinion, the aliens look sillier than usual and the defenders don't look like would defend anything, I guess it is because of the known effects that tone of blue has on people... I think I'll stick to the alien sets this time. Edited December 24, 2010 by vexorian Quote
michaelozzie Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Looks like we have several types of alien heads being used on the figures. Im not a big fan of the blue spacesuits being worn by the humans. Looks like they tried to create a hazmat type appearance. Not very millitary looking but thats what TLG would prefer I guess. Quote
brickmack Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Wow those sets look great (From what little I could make out from the pictures at least). Too bad its not until the 2nd half of 2011... And the trans yellow looks great. Quote
Baylego Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Yay! I am so happy about this theme. The aliens look absolutely lovely, I can't wait to see more. The humans on the other hand are pretty boring, and their vehicles look kind of awkward. Quote
Sirens-of-Titan Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Looks like the human in the UFO abduction set has some type of new double-barrel weapon in his hand. The theme is fantastic; its like a merger between classic space, UFO, and old 50's movies! It's meant to be cheesy, and indeed it looks like there are weird alien slugs that attack to human heads Now I know where the hazmat suit guy from Series 4 is going! Quote
Cutty Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Woah! This theme should have existed back in the 90's when I was all into alien invasion stuff and playing "UFO: Enemy Unknown" for obscene amounts of time! I'll definitly look into getting me that tripod-vehicle at least, just for kicks! Quote
robuko Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 (edited) Fantastic theme, love the vibe. Not sure about the Earthling blue tones, though blue and yellow together is of course The command centre is a great set. I presume the aliens are the invaders here, which makes a nice change; hope they are the good guys like the human invaders somehow were in Power Miners, Rock Raiders, Mars Mission, Atlantis I agree with others here, the UFOs are more exciting than the human stuff. But there are only so many ways to make a flying saucer, as we found out last time. Which ones I buy will be all about the minifigs Edited December 24, 2010 by robuko Quote
prateek Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 (edited) Yay! More aliens! I love it. I can't wait for better pics, although the most interesting set IMO is the Tripod Invader. Edited December 24, 2010 by prateek Quote
VBBN Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Have to admit, really digging these ones. I likes SPIII, but never picked up any of the sets as honestly it just wasnt my schtick, but I may get something from this line, Mainly interested in that mothership and the tripod(War of the worlds anyone?) Quote
user Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 I'm pretty happy with these sets, especially the mothership! And it looks like there are scientists and soldiers so it might possibly have an area 51 type set later on! And I'm really glad that this one takes place on earth (since the alieans are abducting a farmer in one pic and a business man is being chased by a brainslug in another) and for once the badguy color scheme isn't black! Quote
Rick Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 still I think it looks al little uninspirerd and more like a bad Hollywood movie They looks like something from the old space movies! I LOVE THEM ! I indeed think they're inspired by old 1950s alien invasion movies, with the typical 'flying saucer' type UFOs. Not that I'm getting any of these, but I do like the concept. in ufo abduction there is a farmer with what looks like the old picth fork! i am no expert, but i don't think that the pitch fork has been in production scince the 90's. The pitchfork in the Kingdoms' 'mill set' seems like a brown Atlantis trident. Chances are it's the same thing that's included here. Quote
Dannylonglegs Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 OooOOooh! Pictures! Fun! Well, now that the sets are here, I've got a question; If the "defenders" are on earth, why do they need space-suits?! They don't seem to protect them from the brain-invaders (see largest set.) This criticism belies my true opinion on the theme. Despite its being on earth, the theme does not look half bad! The sets appear well designed and cosmetically appealing. The backdrop, chiefly the darkness, fits perfectly with the models, and the alien faction is very cool looking! I like the head-crab like alien and believe that one alien has a tentacle for a hand (as per the prototype of many of the SPIII villians! I'm impressed. 'Sucks that it's not Insectoids though. Ah well, our time will come... ~Insectoid Aristocrat Quote
Zarkan Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Classic-Space inspired good guys with U.F.O inspired bad guys? If Ninjago hadn't been coming out next year as well, I would have declared this theme the most unusual hybrid of 2011. However, I honestly think I like Alien Invaders better overall, as it isn't saddled with an overpriced trading card game gimmick and seems to have more advanced set designs. Plus, you can't really beat the return of the original space color scheme - I was hoping TLC would take inspiration from one of their previous sci-fi lines, and sure enough they have. I still doubt I'll purchase any of these sets, but between them, Kingdoms, POTC, Star Wars, City, and even Cars, it looks like the summer 0f 2011 is a lot better than the first half of the year. Quote
ZO6 Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 These sets look like a lot of fun! If these sets use studded wings similar to these and these as opposed to technic panels like these then I'll be sold on the theme. Guess I'll have to wait for better pics to see what kind of pieces are being used here before I decide whether these will be purchases or not. In any case, these prelims look great. I guess I'll have to hold out for the second wave before I get my big base, but this first wave looks pretty neat anyways - especially the alien faction. Bring on the high res. images Quote
Delta 38 Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 They looks like something from the old space movies! I LOVE THEM ! My thoughts exactly. Overall, this is great. Actual classic-styled flying saucers (as opposed to strange vehicles mainly comprised of rockets) complete with new aliens and a nice colour scheme! Is it just me, or is the "tripod" a lot like a recoloured three-legged version of the spider droid released earlier in the Star Wars lineup? It's a shame the tripod isn't like one of the War of the Worlds ones (flatter disc head). I do like the presence of civilians being abducted and stuff, which makes it really seem like an old sci-fi movie. I want every set from the first page, plus maybe the alien mothership. Despite all the other themes I'm interested in, I can't resist having a proper alien army to terrorise my minifigs. Quote
Algernon Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 These look fantastic. Way better than I hoped for. The Tripod set in particular looks like a gem. The alien mothership looks amazing as well, and I'm loving the aesthetics on the Defense HQ. I can't see the jet chopper too well but it looks like it has potential. I am REALLY stoked for this now. mathias Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 OK, seriously. For me this could actually be Lego heaven. I realise that I am slightly (he he) older than the primary target group but: Hello! Using these sets I can probably recreate hundreds of scenes from my favourite movies. UFO:s, tripod, slugs, abductions... The only thing I feel less extatic about are the humans. However, the collectable minifigs can easily pose as gullible victims. Fingers crossed for a domed (?) marsian... Quote
Solitary Dark Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 (edited) This is the first theme for ages that I genuinely might pick up a few sets and keep them intact for - I'm more interested in the Aliens - they look very cool, and the new space helmet goes a long way for me. I'll probably just pick up a few of the smaller sets for minifigs mainly, but this does have some fun MOC potential. I just hope this theme gets into regular stores in the U.K - I never saw a SPIII set anywhere other than a Lego store, if I did I would have picked more up. I've never seen a World Racers set in the U.K. Edited December 24, 2010 by mookage Quote
Oky Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Cool. I like the B-Movie vibe of them. The alien sets are certainly more interesting than the human sets which look like slightly recolored Agents sets. Don't hate me for saying this, but I have never been a big fan of the Classic Space color scheme. It's great that these sets come with civilians for the aliens to terrorize. None of these sets seem to be the battle pack described in the first post though. I tried to enhance the pics as much as I could. Enjoy! Page 1 Page 2 Quote

Jargo Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 I'm not terribly impressed with the human side vehicles but the alien one's look great. I love the tripod. I can see a few of those stampeding across my city. love the new dome piece. The aliens look quite cool. Compatible with power miners and space police. Nifty. Quote
Delta 38 Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 (edited) Hey, I just noticed something... Look at the aliens in the images. They appear to be different than the one we saw earlier. On the first page, you can see that their heads are elongated, and they have sticking-out eyes. The abduction set has a pretty good view of the alien head from the front, and it is definitely not the same head as the alien seen earlier. Hopefully, this will mean that there are various styles of aliens in the sets, which are all part of the same group but look different. I can't tell if the circular base of the mothership is just a large gap or made of large transparent pieces. Probably a large gap, unfortunately. The helmet in the smallest set is also confusing, because it appears different to the others. Hopefully it's a blue hazmat helmet, or a new helmet altogether. I'm now certain that the tripod's design is definitely taken from the Spider droid. It's too bad I don't have the Spider droid though, because it might be possible to make a large hybrid one or something. The tripod is definitely smaller, though, and it's good that it comes with a saucer as well. Edit: Oh, and about the battlepack, I don't think it's a minifigure pack. Would civilians be included if it was one? You can't really build an army like previous knights or skeletons with them either. Also, the original post mentioned that the aliens had different heads, so my theory is probably correct. Edited December 25, 2010 by Delta 38 Quote
Ceroknight Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 Mixed feelings with these, the new aliens look fantastic, but I don't like the blue suits Reminds me too much of Jayko As for the vehicles, the human's remind me of the Agents vehicles, similar colour scheme while the aliens have classic cliche types of vehicles. robuko Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 That big ugly green guy reminds me of Vogons! constructor fleet approaching I already have my series 1 Marvin, now how to make Zaphod? Quote
