Billius Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 Hi, hello this is my first post after just joining EB. My apologies if this has been covered before but I can't see a previous posting... As a family we've just received TS3, HP Hogwarts Express and the Emerald Night (EN) Lego railway sets for Christmas. I also have multiple PF/IR accessories - 3x#8882 Power Functions XL Motor, 2x#8878 Power Functions Rechargeable Battery Box, #8887 Transformer 10v DC adapter, 2x#8884 Power Functions IR Receiver, 2x#8870 Power Functions LED Lights, 2x#8879 Power Functions IR Speed Remote Control and #8885 Power Functions IR Remote Control + battery box and 'old' non PWM Power Functions IR Receiver. Obviously i can use the PF set to motorize the Emerald Night - which I will do in the next day or so. However what I really need advice is how to motorize the Hogwarts Express and the TS3 sets USING PF XL MOTOR - not using traditional #8866 9V RC motor (available from S@H) The reasoning here is that i have the XL #8882 motors already and also its hard to get hold of the new more efficient '#8866 like' 9v PF Train Motor without buying the #7938 Passenger train. Plus I'd like to use a similar wheel and piston setup as the Emerald Night on the TS3 and HP Hogwarts Express. I know the wheels are small on the HP hogwarts express so I also bought an extra TS3 set for the parts (it was half price) - so I have another set of the large steam locomotive wheels. Please can anyone advise how to go about motorizing these two sets with the PF XL motor ? (or tell me I'm barking mad and should wait for the #8866 'new' 9V PF Motor Thanks, Bill Quote
The Yellow Brick Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 If you want to know how to power the Toy story train your best look here. The best way to power the HP train is to either use a 9V motor in the tender or hide a battery box inside some rolling stock and put the Power Functions motor underneath it. But I'm not really a train nerd person so you might want to get a second opinion on that . Quote
Cwetqo Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 HP train: possible, but with major modifications. I plan to do this, with similar mechanism as in emerald nigh. TS3: IMO its boiler is too slim to incorporate any kind of motor or mechanism, so I think that only way is PF train motor. Quote
Billius Posted December 27, 2010 Author Posted December 27, 2010 HP train: possible, but with major modifications. I plan to do this, with similar mechanism as in emerald nigh. So - basically I need to copy the EN gearing mechanism etc - do you or anyone else know of someone who has done this already? TS3: IMO its boiler is too slim to incorporate any kind of motor or mechanism, so I think that only way is PF train motor. Right - I think you maybe right. So - where can I get the new 9V PF Motor without buying complete Passenger train? Thanks, Bill Quote
hoeij Posted December 28, 2010 Posted December 28, 2010 Right - I think you maybe right. So - where can I get the new 9V PF Motor without buying complete Passenger train? They're listed on www.bricklink.com for $14 and change. Quote
______ Posted December 30, 2010 Posted December 30, 2010 I hear that next year they are selling the motors they use in the cargo train and passenger train separately, I plan to motorize my little brothers HP train like this. Quote
jojo60 Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 (edited) Hello, This is my first train modification. I have bought 7597 only as a base for moc. It is based on a mixture between Emerald night and TS3 train. I am mostly interested in Technic and Mindstorms so I had to find extra components in my bin : XL motor, PF receiver, and (to big) battery box. The drive train copied from the instructions of the "Emerald Night" is incredibly powerful : it can haul all the cars I own without a problem (7597 + 7939 +7938 = 8cars) The cars were also lowered to make them minifig compatible (woody is to tall for my taste...) I have just bought a second 7597 to make it better with a tender and bigger cars (maybe with bogies)so more mods are to come soon. http://img844.imageshack.us/i/dsc7970.jpg http://img828.imageshack.us/i/dsc7971.jpg See you Jojo60 Edited January 14, 2011 by jojo60 Quote
