On to more suggestions, in blue torso maibe you could recolor the gems, perhaps red,so it would stand out, right now it is just lost in the middle i think. Also you could try putting gems on the shields...looking at it in blue i noticed that the original shield as room for a gem but doesn't have it.try that if you like :classic:

The brown on the blue tends to clash a bit, maibe also a white cloak could look better:) also try gold instead of silver for the higher ranked elves.

You know, when I was making the blue torso my first thought was to make the gems red. But then I thought, well the official ones are green-on-green, so shouldn't mine be blue-on-blue to match? Plus if I wanted to make a red themed clan of elves, I'd be able to use the red gems there. But, seeing as you've brought it up I'm happy to go with my first instinct of red gems!

I fear that even fastidious elves would have a hard time keeping a white cloak clean!

Elf15.jpg

Just wondering, would you be able to provide the sizes for all the decals? (I know one of the indexes has most of them, but mainly for the belts, and legs.

Thanks!

BTW, your decals are amazing! Great job!

Thanks very much! I'm glad people seem to be enjoying them! :classic:

All the elven decals are in 600dpi, so it should work without a hitch if you're printing from an image editor, even something as basic as MS Paint. On the other hand if you plan to compile multiple images into a Word document or something (as I know some people do), I'm sorry but I'm probably not much help to you as I've not done that before. :sceptic:

I do make the images a fraction of a millimetre larger just to ensure print coverage to the very edge of the decal.

The blue shield should have a different animal on it. Something to do with the sea, or at least an animal that's associated with blue. I'm not sure what. Dolphins come to mind. One that looks as it has jumped out of the water. But then it might seem silly. A red and gold elf ensemble with maybe a squirrel shield would be pretty neat.

Good point. Lego's elk head emblem is perfect for the wood elves, but I was never quite happy with it on the blue shield. I took your suggestion and tried a couple of sea animals, but found that they just looked too hippy-like to work. :look:

So anyway I settled on a bird , which I based on some clipart I found:

Elvenshieldovalblue01.jpg

Elvenshieldtriangleblue02.jpg

Elvenshieldcircularblue02.jpg

PS: I like the idea of doing a red clan (or possibly more rufous), so I'll keep your idea of a squirrel in mind and see how that looks!

Finally tried printing again with the same results, lol. I should try some very smooooth paper, this plain junk ruins the printing because of how textured it is, makes it look fuzzy.

1.551cm width worked great, there's even a little bit of room for error.

Love the decals dude, I'm trying my hand at Red Sonja, getting used to using the Pen Tool over again is a pain in the bum!

Edit: printed on photo paper, much sharper! Though I see the problem with printing on white paper, it messes with some of the colors >_<

Woo, I'm very pleased to see some physical figures taking shape there! :sweet:

Are you tinting the colours yourself, or are the purple robe and orangish female torso some sort of anomoly? Of course I'm more than happy for you to tint them as you wish, and I'm hoping that you have - otherwise I can't figure out what would have gone wrong!

Also the problem with your average grade of paper is that it's usually porous enough to cause the ink to bleed. Not such an issue when looking at a whole page of course, but when looking at the tiny sizes of Lego figures it's much more noticable. So yeah, I find it's always worth using the better quality papers/stickers for this kind of thing, just to help keep things sharp. (That's also why I print on a laser!)

I'd love to see your Red Sonja when she's done! Are you intending to base her on the comics or movie? In fact, you make me want to go and make some decals of Arnie as Conan the Barbarian!

Best of luck with them!

My apologies, I meant to address this in the last post. But as you mentioned, the official Lego shield does not have a gem set into it, which was why I did the same in mine - just to try and keep them as uniform as possible.

And now that I think about it I guess it makes perfect sense, a sheild would take far too much punishment to warrant spending that kind of money decorating it!

Oops! Should have mentioned that I tinted some of the colors myself, like the purple dress.

The only problems I had were with the brown areas, they appear very reddish. I like reddish-brown, but the white paper makes the red really stand out to the point where it's distracting/over-saturated. It's a problem with my paper/printer though, not your designs. I still want to go to Kinkos and see if they will print on clear sticker sheets.

Now that you mention, you´re probably right a gem is too precious to craft into to something that is meant to take a beating

Also i think i understand why i thought the blue gems were off, in the official shield is green on green but the gem are the light green and scale are dark. in the blue shield the scales were lighter and that´s probably why... anyway the red ones suit perfectly.

Also the eagle "faction" looks stuning

After this ,and your conan design,i honestly do not know how to compliment you anymore :classic: i´ll just stick to comments and ideas from now on okay?

I'm very new to Fantasy wargaming with Lego minifigs and I was delighted to find your Elf decals almost by accident as it happens. I have ordered a new series III Elf, but there is absolutely no way that I would want to use him as the basis of an army at the prices that are wanted for these new minifigs here in New Zealand.

I wargame with other 'toy' figures too and lacking a suitable minifig to experiment on I tried out the printouts on another brand of very cheap playset figure that I use a lot in my games. Please don't cast me out or throw things at me for this picture; - but I will say in my defense that the printouts do make him look awfully good.

Oh and here's a tip, - I'm using ordinary A4 sticker paper, but I paint it with waterproof PVA to give it a durable surface.

It looks really nice Nun,it honestly does :classic:! But why does he look sad? Is he getting his megablocks kicked on the battlefield?

Hey Ed guess the blue colour scheme is gaining quiet a fandom . How far are you from showing us your own mighty elf army?

Cheers

I'm not really sure how he ended up looking sad, I used the printout with the stern expression too.

I assumed you recoloured them, I can't see any set of circumstances where the colours could come out like that by accident!

But yeah, they look good; I want to see how the purple mage turns out!

Cool blue elves! I like the eagle faction that has been created, it could be useful for other races as well!

Hmm... could form the basis for an updated Black Falcon decal?

I totally agree with you about the gems, I hadn't realised it until you pointed it out but the difference between the armour and the gems on the green decal was much greater than on the blue. Lighten the blue gems too much and they start to look too similar to the silver elements - you were right, red is the best choice. :classic:

LOL, well thank you very much! Some occasional words of encouragement and an endless supply of new ideas is all I need!

Wow! The eagle design looks really nice! Great job! (Now I just need to make some blue elves..)

Thanks! I look forward to seeing your elves!

Hello White Nun, and welcome to the board!

I think your figure turned out very nicely, despite not being Lego!

I'm not familiar with the brand, but curiously it almost looks like a miniature Play Mobile figure.

While I don't wargame myself, I'm thinking about remaking the old Milton Bradley board game "Hero Quest" with Lego. Just for fun really. Do you customise your wargaming minifigs? You should post pictures of your army if you do!

Oh, and the PVA trick sounds interesting - do you water it down at all?

I think he looks sad either because of the way the light catches his forehead, or the way his helmet crops his eyebrows - the first face I posted is just a straight repro of the official one, I swear!

But yeah, obscure the eyebrows and all you're left with is a mouth that's turned down at the corners. Not that I think there's anything wrong with that mind you, he almost looks like he's tired and saddened at all the pointless barbarism of war. Or am I reading too much into his little featues?

And Aveal, I just received my BrickLink order today! And while I won't have an army, I should have a small group of stealthy elven rangers to show on the weekend.

Me thinks he is just sad he´s not a Lego minifig

Elf armies aren´t usually large in numbers anyway right?I´m dying to see them

And about Milton´s game...It is curious that you mention that now, cause I spend the last couple of days looking at Brickquest and thinking about how can I update it. Brickquest is pretty much HeroQuest with minifigs(slightly simpler perhaps)but looks old and out of fashion. If you decide to work on something like that, and feel like co-operating you have my help fully at your disposal!

No I use the glue just as it is without any dilution and smooth it on carefully. The brush I use is a nicely sized soft bristled brush intended for water colour painting. Afterwards I wash the brush really well in running water and it's as good as new.

Nun, have you tried using Mod Podge? It might give you a different finish, never hurts to try new stuff :)

No, I haven't seen it around before, but it does sound like it's useful stuff.

I have a steady group of players for Advanced Brickquest (campaign rules). They love it! I run about 7 large adventures per real year.

I've been meaning to post some of them here for ages. I'll try to move it higher on the "to do" list.

(EDIT) I forgot to add, to get the proper reflective property from printed torso stickers, I cover them with clear cellophane tape(scotch tape)before cutting them out. I often use Sharpie on the edges as well. Be careful with the Sharpie as paper can be very absorbant.

Ahab out...

Thank you for the offer! I hadn't thought of modifying the game at all, simply replacing the plastic figures with Lego ones, but I suppose the sky's the limit in terms of what one could create... hmm... I'll have to put some thought into that!

I've never really gotten into Brickquest, but I'll obviously need to take a closer look at it now.

So, my Bricklink order arrived earlier in the week - and much to my disapointment I had stupidly ordered the wrong angled slope to make the mage's robe. :cry_sad:

But while the mage will now have to wait for my next order, I was able to get some dark green torsos to make my elven scouting party!

I've now got 15 of the official elves, who will form the warrior ranks in my little woodland army. I'm picturing my five rangers here with five warriors, just for comparison.

None of the faces are all custom yet, I'm going to see about printing them on transparent stickers, as all the printing will be darker than the plastic.

As always, any feedback is most welcome, cheers!

Now that´s a way to start my morning :classic: they look really nice! I like the faces you used instead of the original in some of them, good job.Now we just need more hair pieces  but even that didn´t look as bad as I would think. Too bad about the mage,I was curious about how that one would turn out.

As for Brickquest/Heroquest, I not sure about the rules of heroquest cause I´ve never played it,this sort of games is extremely rare in my country and people to play them with even rarer. So I thought of using the brickquest ones. Now only I need is someone to play with. Actually as I write this, next to me in the desk are four minifigs adventures, three monsters and a chest full of coins and jewels i set aside yesterday to give a try at the mechanics today, but it´ll never be the same thing with out a full build dungeon.

Keep them coming!

The rules for Heroquest used to be available for download along with the dungeon tiles and other bits. I have the game and all the expansions packed away in a box somewhere, but I'm not sure just where they are at the moment.

UPDATE! This website has just about everything you'd need to play the game available for download. My link

Wow! the sight of all those Elves is seriously amazing Ed.

Wowww! Awesome, thanks alot Nun  the package is downloading as I write. Now I need to convince someone to try it with me. If any of you ever in Portugal let me know

I hope you enjoy it! It really is a fun little game. Ideally if you can get four other people involved, it makes for a better quest. I played this game a lot with my brothers and friends when we were kids, has a lot of fond memories for me!

On a side note, these are the Lego versions I made of the four player pieces; the Barbarian, the Dwarf, the Elf and the Wizard:

LegoHeroQuest.jpg

A little generic I know, but that's kind of the point in the game I guess. I'm most happy with the barbarian, and I'll surely be replacing the elf with one of the Collectable versions from now on! I'm not really happy with the wizard (there is literally no change to him except a staff in place of a wand, otherwise he's directly out of impulse set 5614).

hi there Ed-209, i loved your idea of elf sticker and decal torsos, and some of your design templates look good. i did some myself, but instead of the printers i uses good old paint brush, some acrylic and enamel model paints. here are the results. some edited and based on your designs, others slightly modified.. Thank you!

Mods I do not know if I should start a new thread but since this is simliar I have posted here.

can't get a MF3 elf? make you own!

DSCN9094.jpg

how about elf tunics, without armor. Elite Forest guard.

DSCN9095.jpg

the elf king of the woodland realm

DSCN9096.jpg

how about some elf common folk?

DSCN9097.jpg

in the forest, there be hawks and falcons too

DSCN9098.jpg

Doe a deer a female deer, but this is a stag. I made this for the elf king, since on the shield of the MF3 minifig is a stag. Antlers are made from epoxy putty, and painted when hardened.

DSCN9115.jpg

a mounted stag, something to outcool the barding horses out there.

DSCN9114.jpg

DSCN9113.jpg

the current small forest guard..

DSCN9099.jpg

An elf scout, ranger. Minifig torso is custom painted, note the dagger inspired by Ed-209's design. Quiver is standard, but with a scabbard mod to hold a sword ( for close in combat)lossley based on the Prince Persia's katana holder. Lucky red Parrot upgraded to a hawk, by painting in brown, with feathers.

DSCN9103.jpg

Elven citizen militia. Scratchbuilt elven sword, uncomplete wip as yet, going to make the hilt and blade blend in nice curve. I know brickarms and brickforge make nice elven swords, would love to order from them, but at the moment DIY suffices. Shield is from vintage forestman set.

Elf elite forest guard.

DSCN9106.jpg

The MF3 elf archer was brickverted to a Elf Army man, with the bow as his main weapon, and the modded scabbard quiver holding the sword of his choice. All the torso is handpainted. no decal or stickers.. hence the lousy armour chain mail pattern :(. The one on left most has golden thigh armour, acting as the captain/prince of the Army.

DSCN9108.jpg

Tthe pretty elf witch. Completely painted, including 2x2x2slope brick. Instead of ED-209's full long dress, I opted for the lighter mini-skirt found in games like Warcraft, Warhammer and the like.

PS - I am slowly converting the minifigs to flesh heads and hands. It might take a while as they are hard to come by in loose and very high in demand. The Yellow heads are temporary.

Thanks Ed-209 for the inspiration, would love to hear from you guys for constructive feedback on how i can improve. I am going to work on blue themed High Elves next.

Wow Tomcat, they're incredible! I'd never have a steady enough hand to paint detail like this in that scale!

I'm thrilled and extremely flattered that I was part of the inspiration for these works of art!

I have no problem in the least with you posting them here, but have to agree with Baylego; they deserve to be in their own thread for higher visibility.

The custom weapons and quivers look great, and the idea of a Lego deer is fantastic! I look forward to seeing the blue high-elves too!

PS: I really hope the guys from BrickForge take notice of the deer idea!

I have been following this thread with some interest. Everything is really nice..

Just had an idea for you in terms of choice of head. I thought the pharaoh head from Series 2 could work well for a high elf or elf mage:

The Earth Blue (BL's dark blue) makeup he's wearing seems a bit garish for an elf. Elves in both traditional mythology and many modern fantasy stories are perceived as nature spirits or at least a "close-to-nature" race. So I can't say I feel the Pharaoh's face would work particularly well.

Ideally I'd expect other male elves to have similar Medium Nougat (BL's Medium Dark Flesh) cheek lines to the actual Elven Warrior minifigure. Medium Nougat works a lot better as shading on Bright Yellow minifigure skin than previous attempts such as Bright Orange (BL's Orange) or Black. Minifigures that demonstrate this include the Hula Dancer and of course our friend the elf. Now if only that would make its way to mainstream themes...
