Henchmen4Hire Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) For the record, I think the models kinda suck too (I had high expectations ), not "suck" as in "OMG those things are crap", more like if I was expecting a tasty pie and got a muffin instead, not as satisfying. I saw them and was like, "meh". I like blockiness to a point, like older muscle cars and vans, but it looks bad on those models up close. I'm forgiving because I understand their ultimate purpose is to be seen at a distance. They're pretty from far away so the designers did their job. Edited January 27, 2011 by DrNightmare Quote
AndyC Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I really wish these models were displayed better so they wouldn't have to be so blocky... I mean, if they were to put these behind a glass wall, imagine how far out they'd be. 1/20 scale... Thing with that is, a lot of the people going aren't going to be mega Star Wars fans desperate to see super accurate models (those folk all gone to ILM or something) and what they're expecting to see at Legoland is something that looks like it's made out of Lego. Now AFOLs may well know just how un-Lego like some models can be, like Emerald Night, but your man on the street has other expectations. Quote
Fallenangel Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) But as far I can see, I didn't post in that thread, did I ? I am always pleased to see that some people notice that I try to do my best for my models to look good (at least to be well designed) both outside and inside. That's something important to me in the design process. But very detailled model outside and well optimised inside requires a lot of time. It is regrettable that this huge Millenium Falcon is not better than 10179 in term of design and detail. But I think that this is fully understandable : the goal of a model which will be displayed in a Legoland is not the same of a model which will be produced and sold in thousands of copies. :) That said, it is true that the Snowspeeder looks very weird. I think that it may be quite easy to achieve a better model, without spending hours and hours. As for a T-47, I'm quite satisfied with my 10129. :) Whoops, it was actually LoRd AmUnRa. I saw the Slave I avatar and for some reason I thought of Anio. Still, Brickdoctor is right in that despite the limitations Anio sets for himself his models are much better than anything LEGO has done. Eh, the nose on the 10129 is oversized, and the fact that it was based on the full-size mockups rather than one of the 21" miniatures means that fat bottom area, which in my opinion doesn't fit with the sleek profile of the rest of the T-47. But I will say that LEGO generally did a pretty good job with that particular set. Just because something has to look like it's LEGO doesn't mean it has to be blocky and ugly. For me all a LEGO model needs to look like LEGO is a bunch of studs. Besides, I doubt anyone's going to point at an X-wing with a Technic frame and hexagonal nose cross-section and get mad because it doesn't look like LEGO. I mean, Erik Varszegi's Venator... I'm not sure what you consider "super accurate" but I certainly wasn't expecting anything close to it, simply because LEGO is such a difficult medium to work with. I'm not complaining about the lack of panel lines or weathering on these models, because I know that's next to impossible with LEGO, even at 1:20 scale. At the very least, I would expect 1:20 models to look more like what they're supposed to be than their 1:42 System counterparts. And I think the Miniland T-47 may actually look less like the studio model than 7130. Now what's this about a Mississippi paddle boat? Edited January 27, 2011 by fallenangel327 Quote

When viewed from certain angles, especially the back 3/4, the System model id literally unrecognizable as a T-47 Now what's this about a Mississippi paddle boat? LLCA has one that's around 4 feet long. It's covered in greebling and detailing like you'd normally find on an AFOL's MOC. Genres aside, it puts the SW Miniland models to shame. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Sorry for the double post. Well, my LLC newsletter arrived today, and inside were some ads for the Star Wars Miniland. With new pics. So like any good, benevolent, philanthropic FOL, I took pics: (no access to a scanner, unfortunately) Dwarf Spider Droids! Theed Palace! Hoth Shield Generator! Juggernaut! I'm thinking these latest are much more accurate and do their 'real' counterparts justice. The Theed palace fits right in with typical Miniland architecture, and I'm lovin' the look of those Dwarf Spiders. Plus look at that Juggernaut compared to the boy - judging by the size of the bricks in the wheels I'd say they're to-scale with each other. Quote
prateek Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Juggernaut! A humongous one! I just love those wheels. I can't wait to see this thing completed, and hopefully in real life one day! Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Thanks for sharing this wonderful info Doc! Those SW miniland builds do look promising, hope to see them even only in pics (clear and close-up shots) soon. And now that is a Juggernaut! Quote

Luckily the 'Net will probably be flooded with pics once it opens. I forgot to add to the list of new things, you can see a P-tower next to the Power Generator. Quote
KimT Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 Wow, thanks for sharing Brickdoctor. I'll blog this in a hour or so. THat Juggernaut sure looks awesome. Quote
simonjedi Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Paging Doctor FallenAngel to this thread. Doctor FallenAngel to this thread please. Do you have a better pic of the Naboo Starfighter BrickDoctor? Quote
The Legonater Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 That's.... impressive. Most impressive. Seriouslyy, that Juggernaut is huge! Now, to get a passport and a trip to California... Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Do you have a better pic of the Naboo Starfighter BrickDoctor? Unfortunately not. It's teeny in the first pic and cut off in the second. Quote
Fallenangel Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Paging Doctor FallenAngel to this thread. Doctor FallenAngel to this thread please. Ha-ha, very funny... I have only a faint idea of what a Juggernaut tank looks like, so I don't see anything wrong. Of course, the proportions and size would be different depending on whether it's an A5 (small) or an A6 (large). On the other hand, I can see SNOT, greeblies, hinged bricks, and even some Technic on that Juggernaut. They can pimp an Expanded Universe vehicle but not an X-wing? Quote

Fallenangel Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 The Juggernaut has a cameo appearance in Ep. 3, so it wouldn't be EU. And apparently, the answer is yes. I knew that; I was referring to the fact that it was an Expanded Universe vehicle prior to its appearance in Sith, in the manner of the Octuptarra Tri-droid and other vehicles from the late Clone Wars. As for the latter... bad show LEGO, bad show... Quote
KimT Posted February 16, 2011 Author Posted February 16, 2011 On the 10th of February the official presentation of Star Wars Miniland in LEGOLand DK was held. Here's the pics from the press material. For high resolution go here Quote

Plus I want one of those Ultimate ATATs R2 doesn't look too hard to reverse-engineer. He's basically two cores with studs on four sides that are plated over and attached to each other. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 17, 2011 Posted February 17, 2011 (edited) Sorry for the double post. I reverse-engineered R2 for you, Solscud. I tried to use only sturdy techniques that the designers would use for LLC. The head does turn, but the third leg is static. .lxf file Edited February 17, 2011 by Brickdoctor Quote

Brickdoctor Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 FBTB posted an official video sent out this morning - so much new stuff to drool over! Banthas, Cantina, Theed hangar, AT-APs, Snowtroopers, Gungans, AT-TEs... The video itself is primarily a time-lapse build of the Geonosis Arena. Quote
prateek Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Holy whatever-is-holy! This is amazing. I'm sure that is more than 1.5 million pieces, considering that minifig scale aircraft carrier is 300 000 pieces itself (can't find the picture right now). Quote
