Posted January 12, 201114 yr I just had to post on this build it was so good,iv just finished my crane truck which I got for Xmas along with my 8043'i have to say it was a good chalenge and took my 3 nights to build which show the amount of parts in it and I also took my time,I'm well impressed as it looks great and all functions work perfectly too,it was a longer build than the excavator for sure but well worth it,I'd recommend it to anyone.

At least 80% of the enjoyment we get from a Technic set is actually the building process. Which is why I love huge sets, and the reason we always 'crave' for a new set once the previous set is done. You should do the dual rear wheel mods to make the truck look more realistic. You can search this forum, I recalled seeing a post somewhere about it.
January 12, 201114 yr Yes the 8258 has a great building process And it looks very good next to the 8285 tow truck!
January 12, 201114 yr I also very much enjoyed building this set. I refused to look at any pictures on brickshelf of it's inner workings so that I could "discover" them for myself when I built it and I was very pleased with the complexity and at how well everything worked, and surprised at how big it was.

Davidmull, thank you for posting that web site. Its fantastic! Lots of great pictures and information. I like seeing vehicles from other countries besides my own. Thank you again. I myself received 8258 as a present last year. Did a few mods such as dual rear wheels and hooked up the rear axle so it is now a driven axle. Defiantly one of TLC's best technic sets.

However one thing I notice that on some trucks, the purpose of having the boom is to lift ballasts, usually concrete ballasts on top of the bed or the trailer to aid traction when pulling heavy loads. So seeing that the 8258 has a fifth wheel hitch, I suppose it's not a cargo carrier, it's actually heavy duty 8x4 tractor. David, you should lube the LAs too..I was surprised how much friction there was on the old LAs compared to the new ones when I built my 8265 loader. I used silicone oil.
January 13, 201114 yr Author Ye I oiled my la,s on the truck with silicone spray oil.5th wheel should be removed from 8258 and a flat bed put on like the real thing I think.
January 13, 201114 yr I also got 8258 short after christmass and build it two weeks ago. I was very amazed about that many parts! I didn't expect THAT many parts! The first time I thought that the box could NOT have been smaller to fit the parts in. The build was very great and the functions are OK. But it's very difficult to play with it for my kids. It's almost to complex for my kids to play with all functions.

Some of the European crane trucks can attach a box or flat bed over the fifth wheel. The box/bed is demountable so that the truck can be used to pull a semi-trailer with the 5th wheel. The 5th wheel is not required to be removed. http://www.ditzj.de/html/en/events/hodel08/hodel01_850.html I stuck a box on top of the 5th wheel on my 8258. I have a L beam on box bottom that goes into the 5th wheel.
