Hinckley Posted January 12, 2011 Author Posted January 12, 2011 Does the minifig have to be fleshie or can I make him yellow skinned? Either. Sounds like a great contest, Hinckley! I'd love to enter, but I have two problems: 1. I only have a phone/ iPod touch camera. 2. I don't have a studio. Can I still enter? You can easily make a studio out of poster board or a white sheet you have laying around the house. If not, take it outside and do natural lighting in a natural setting. The iPod touch has a pretty good camera, so just as long as the picture is good quality it should be fine. Quote
Geertos13 Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 So Hinckley, are we allowed to make two different vignettes for out Minifigure ? Or is that against the rules ? Quote
Gregorovich Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Either. You can easily make a studio out of poster board or a white sheet you have laying around the house. I'll try and enter. Now to think up a character... Quote
Sandy Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Thanks. I did edit it a bit. Do you think it's enough? Yeah, it should be clear to everybody now. Quote
Izzy Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 I'm not trying to come across as rude, I'm just saying a lot of people made up wizards for their avatars, and now to think they can't be used, it seems a bit strange. No need to yell. I think it's a good idea, I'm just saying it could have conincided with the avatar contest nicely. Now I am confused. The avatar competition was to bring Harry Potter into your avatar in any way. So very simple. If some people created an original Wizard for that, I was unaware. But it is another very easy task and fun to boot. Plus "no need to yell"? Really? If you are referring to my capitalization on the letters O, M and G. That is not yelling, just abbreviation. Quote
Forresto Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 I was just curious if I could ask to takt a cell phone picture? My camera on my phone is a hundred times better then the 100* year old one I rarely use *Alright more like 7 years. Quote
Hinckley Posted January 12, 2011 Author Posted January 12, 2011 So Hinckley, are we allowed to make two different vignettes for out Minifigure ? No. Quote
prateek Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Do we need a vignette or can we just post the minifig? Quote
Sisco Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Great contest! I do enjoy making my own characters... But all the books are original, there is no expanded universe like Star Wars. Is there? Actually, there kind of is. They're not really well known, but there are a few books that were mentioned in the Original 7 that were made into books for us muggles to read. Here we have Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (a textbook carried by Harry while taking his 'Care of Magical Creatures' Class), Quidditch Through the Ages (a book written by Famous Quidditch Expert Kennilworthy Whisp in the First (?) book), and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. (The Wizarding Fairy Tale book that 'Deathly Hallows' is centered around.) These are actually great companion books to the series, and I enjoy a copy of each. Ceroknight Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Oh..ok thank you, hmmm I'm not sure if this makes it easier or harder.. Quote
Tazmaniac Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 is the whole vig judged or just the MiniFig ? Quote
Hinckley Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 Do we need a vignette or can we just post the minifig? The vig is optional. Great contest! I do enjoy making my own characters... But they are not Expanded Universe as they are in the opening of the Star Wars license. Other authors wrote the stories in the Expanded Universe. The books you reference are written by JK Rowling and are therefore considered canon. is the whole vig judged or just the MiniFig ? It's hard to pretend the vig isn't there, isn't it? Quote
Geertos13 Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Entry Posted !( available HERE ) I noticed the topic said we had to comment in this thread so I just wanted to say that I really liked TazManiac's entry ! The Wizard looks Nice and that Ministry fireplace is sweet ! Some more background info about the Character would have been nice ! But it's up to you ! After all, he's just a random worker ! Quote

The Wizard looks Nice and that Ministry fireplace is sweet ! Some more background info about the Character would have been nice ! But it's up to you ! After all, he's just a random worker ! Cheers "Geertos13" It's still a wip, but meets the max part count so now the tricky task of swaping out parts to add detail. with a 10 piece count on the Fig alone I've only 90 bricks to work with ( never had to build to a buget before ). As for a back story I could give you pages and if the comp was scored on concept I would indulge you but I think it will come down to the best Vig/Fig with the best photo. "geertos13" you photo is awesome the angle and lighting are great but I feel you need a bit more feeling to the subject, even just posing your wizard a bit, rather than looking as though he just got slapped with a wet fish (it may be just the head that makes me think that).Great back story!! I hope your links are ok for the comp as they add some real depth to you character, but also leans toward the "Two Vig" question which is not allowed. Thanks "Hinckley" for this comp! updated entry do my lamps count as over hang? they are 75% with in the base, but you said "NO" over hang so I'm checking. Cheers Edited January 14, 2011 by TazManiac Quote
Ceroknight Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 Hello, before I start what those 'overlapping' mean? And this will be voted by members not judged? Quote
Mr.Brick Posted January 14, 2011 Posted January 14, 2011 I love both entries until now. TazManiac's fig is really dynamic and fits well in it's vignette. But I think the 'serious' (stiff) pose of Geertos' entry is very well for the character. It looks like a photo of someone in his study, like you see more often taken after interviews or in biographies. Great work both! Quote

I'm glad you liked he creation, as for the picture itself, in y sotry, that picture was taken for the Dialy Prophet when it hits a best selling record, which means it was a professional photograph. That's why Nuntius is standing quite calm, and almost petrified on the picture. His face isn't that Happy, you're right about that, but as he was heading 68 years old, it seems obvious he wasn't in such a powerfull and moving stand, as your minifigure. On a different subject, the Links posted are there to give some more depth to the character indeed. I know two vigs are not allowed, but I thought, if we are allowed to send the audience to our flickr account than it would be ok. after all, I could have put these pictures on Flickr without linking them directly, but once on my flickr account, the audience could find them anyway. So one quick Question Hinck', to be sure... Is the linking I am doing Allowed ? If so, there is more to come ! Just another thing on your creation TazManiac ^^ If I were you, I woudn't make to much Backstory, I did it for mine because he is supposed to be a famous Wizard and because a random Daily Prophet reported wrote an article about his Death. Your lack of information about this Wizard is great, it describes the ministry worker perfectly. In the world we live in, every collegue of ours seems a stranger, nobody actually has a real "identity", anonymous people we see everyday but we don't pay attention to them because of our own blindness and self-conceitedness. Hinckley Posted January 14, 2011 Author Posted January 14, 2011 Hello, before I start what those 'overlapping' mean? That has already been answered. updated entry do my lamps count as over hang? they are 75% with in the base, but you said "NO" over hang so I'm checking. Cheers Oooh, sorry. Yes. The lamps do count as overhang. As much as I love them, you'll have to move or remove them. A rule is a rule. Sorry. Quote
Dan the Brickman Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 That has already been answered. Oooh, sorry. Yes. The lamps do count as overhang. As much as I love them, you'll have to move or remove them. A rule is a rule. Sorry. What if you move the wall, so its diagonal across the base? Then the lamps would fit inside, and we could still enjoy the awesome design. Great entries so far. I hope I can think of something as neat. Quote
Geertos13 Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I've just seen, Cutlass Iz' entry ! Great Job ! I loved the Vignette ! The Backstory was interresting too, I still do think it seems all a bit unlikely to have a full time Apparition teacher. BUT, why not ?! Good Job and best of luck in the contest ! Quote

I completely agree, great entry Cutlass Iz. Both the back story and the vignette are excellent. ~buddy~ Quote
Sisco Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Wow, great entries all around! I believe that my favorite so far is TazManiac's Jade Rip-Snorter. I really enjoyed his backstory, and his character is very pleasing to the eye. However, Cutlass Iz's Cryil Craven is a very close second. Great vignette! I like all the curios from around the world. Geertos's Daily Prophet editor has the best backstory, IMHO. Also, there's a great vignette to back it up. I'm not too keen on the minifigure, sorry. He looks nice, and fits the part, but he just isn't the whimsical and slightly insane person I imagined as the Daily Prophet's editor. My entry will be up soon, so keep a lookout! Quote
Ceroknight Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Is Cuttlass Iz's vignette over hanged at the bottom? All of them looks fantastic so far Quote
Tazmaniac Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 (edited) Is Cuttlass Iz's vignette over hanged at the bottom? All of them looks fantastic so far yeah It is I was about to give her the heads up on that one, but you beat me to it ..... now to fix my entry. ok updated again, my only concern now is my MiniFig's hat just pokes out slightly from the 8x8 cut-off but as it is not part of the Vig I thought I'd get away with it...... I will again hassle Hinckley to ok it for me ...Cheers Great to see some more entries up , should I elaborate on my character? Edited January 16, 2011 by TazManiac Quote

Isn't Professor Binns, History of Magic a ghost? Aha, yes. Oops, never mind. Now I've seen Cutlass IZ's entry, I understand Apparition. Duh. Sorry! IZ, you're going to kill me, but those wood tiles are overhang. Sorry, a rule is a rule. Please revise that for the entry to be valid. My name is Hinckley and it's my job to crush creativity. Quote
