Sisco Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 My name is Hinckley and it's my job to crush creativity. Yes, yes it is. Just kidding. Too bad though, that was my favorite Vignette. It'll still look fine, it just won't have the wooden planks. I'm glad you enforce the rules though, this could turn ugly without that. So... My entry is posted. Any feedback is appreciated. I always listen, and do my best to answer. Quote
Tazmaniac Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 So... My entry is posted. Any feedback is appreciated. I always listen, and do my best to answer. Your creation is great with a detailed back story expaining every thing from his choice of clothing to the reason for the two tone floor But even with these explanations I'm still not getting the wizard vibe from your minifig... but that's just me. best of luck in the comp ps @ Hinckley does my top hat count as overhang ? it's not fixed to the Vig but to the MiniFig so if it's in question I'll move him and re-shoot the entry...cheers Quote
Sisco Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 1. Your creation is great with a detailed back story explaining every thing from his choice of clothing to the reason for the two tone floor 2. But even with these explanations I'm still not getting the wizard vibe from your minifig... but that's just me. Thanks for the feedback. 1. Thanks for liking my backstory; I knew someone as odd as Cecil Saneworth was going to need quite a bit of explaining! 2. I understand that. I was going to include his wand in there somewhere, I just never could find a place. Pretend it's in his pocket. Good luck to you too! I really enjoyed your entry. Quote
Tazmaniac Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 is that a wand in your pocket ? or..... Quote
Sisco Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 is that a wand in your pocket ? or..... !!! Oh, I didn't even think of that when I posted. Good one! I was thinking more of Mad-eye's comment about Wands in back pockets and blown-off buttocks, personally. Quote
Admiral Ron Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I am enjoying everyone's entries quite a bit! Mine was just posted, so any feedback will be greatly appreciated! Quote
Sisco Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I am enjoying everyone's entries quite a bit! Mine was just posted, so any feedback will be greatly appreciated! Very nice entry! I see that everyone is putting that Arabian Face to good use. I like your Vignette as well. One thing; could you perhaps expand on your backstory? It's very nice the way it is now, but you have me intrigued. Did he get booted from his post after Voldemort's demise? Were there any repercussions at all? You don't really have to answer these questions if you don't want to, it's just that you've piqued my curiosity. Quote
Tazmaniac Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 (edited) I am enjoying everyone's entries quite a bit! Mine was just posted, so any feedback will be greatly appreciated! By my count you must have about twenty or so bricks left, try to squeeze in some more detail maybe? apart from that I can't say much it looks great, very middle eastern. As far as your photo it looks a little grainy , I know flashes can be bad on lego but if you flood it with natural light and then use the flash it seems to help alot. Geertos13 Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 The Creations are wonderfull ! Cralegoboy, that Teacher is really great ! As some have already said though, I don't get the Wizard feeling. You might want to put him some more wizarding looking clothes. I know it's a muggle studies teacher, but I still think he woudn't be wandering around wearing Jeans and a T-Shirt ! I liked Admiral rons creations very much too ! The Idea of that Foreign Minister was great, and the "persian" arch makes everything look absolutly accurate ! It seems a bit empty though, you could try to put some more detail into it. Because of the arch there is a new void created making it look even more empty, so you should defenatly put in some new objects and stuff. The Minifigure on the other hand is perfect ! Nice creations everybody ! A little question though, for my personnal creation, some has stated the backstory was great, but the minifigure isn't great... What could I do about it, it's not to late, so I'd be absolutly willing to chnage, the vignette/character looks and maybe even a bit of the Back Story ! What should I do ? I have thought of destroying the whole Daily Prophet Idea, and focusing on the in,vention of the Quick-Quotes Quill, making him a more crazy man.. ? Quote

My advice would be (and take what you will from this as I'm pretty new to all Mocing) HEADS! try every one you've got on until one says "hello" then yoy'll be sorted. I feel the face can make or break a character and with all the heads to choose from these days there's infinite possibilities. Quote
Izzy Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Oops, never mind. Now I've seen Cutlass IZ's entry, I understand Apparition. Duh. Sorry! IZ, you're going to kill me, but those wood tiles are overhang. Sorry, a rule is a rule. Please revise that for the entry to be valid. My name is Hinckley and it's my job to crush creativity. Your name is Hinckley and your job is to push creativity. I read the rules and tried my darned hardest to push the boundaries and get away with that 1/3rd of a brick overhang. Naughty naughty Iz. So now I had to be all clever and figure out a way to fix that but still keep my (printed )wood tiles! Quote

Just because it's the angle of the body. I don't want to see anybody putting an entire house on a fig's head. Your name is Hinckley and your job is to push creativity. Don't forget: the rules state that your first picture posted in the entry thread will be the picture used in the voting thread, so make sure your first pic is what you want! Great work so far, guys. I love the creativity going into these. Quote
Tazmaniac Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 "The Lanterne Rouge" your Charcacter is by far the most original and what a beautifully constructed body best of luck in the comp!! might want to check your "over-hang" with those leaves it would be a shame not to have this masterpiece valid for voting over a bit of greenery. Quote
Sisco Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I've updated my entry to make it seem more 'Wizard-y'. Lantern Rouge: Wow. That is one beautiful centaur! I only wish there was a longer backstory to accompany. Quote
JaseTJ Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Just double checking: we can have stuff change on the fig, like if they have hair and a hat, right? Can I take that further, as long as it's the same character? Quote

Admiral Ron Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Wha??? I believe JaseTJ is onwdering if you can give your character a different set of clothes, or have it with a hat and hair. Quote

Gregorovich Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I've done my entry, and have uploaded my photos to Brickshelf. But my problem is that I can't upload them to EB. It just comes up with the message "you can't use image extension on this board". Does anyone know how to fix this? Or would I be able to just post a link to my Brickshelf folder, but write my character's background on my post? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Oky Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Great entries so far, everyone, keep it up! I'll enter when I get the time too. By the way, The Lantern Rouge's entry looks very nice, but doesn't your minifig have to be a wizard? Quote

The URL's for your pictures are actually NOT the direct links to the image. They are URL's to the page with your picture. You can see this when there is a '/' at the end of the URL. Be sure to copy the direct link (which ends on .jpg or similar) of the picture. Quote

Haltiamieli Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 By the way, The Lantern Rouge's entry looks very nice, but doesn't your minifig have to be a wizard? Can't speak on the behalf of the organisers obviously, but I'd think the important thing is that the creation is an original Harry Potter character. Even the acceptability of female characters would be (theoretically) shaky if the contest name would be taken very literally, as female ones are usually called witches in Harry Potter. Anyway this competition is a great idea, I may consider entering if I come up with some not-too-bad way to represent my ideas in Lego form (with my restricted amount and variety of bricks). Quote

Hm, yes, I guess it would. The rules only say "character", so I guess you're right. That opens up a whole lot of possibilities. The question now is: What's the limit? Does a dragon count as a character? Quote
Admiral Ron Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Thanks for all the advice everyone! I have updated, so any more comments would be lovely! TazManiac: I love your entry! The character is very wizardy, and the scene is perfect, though I wonder how he floo-powdered into the Gryffindor common room Geertos13: Your character is very well thought out, and though he does look rather stiff, he is an editor, so I think that fits. The vig could use a little more details on the walls though. Cutlass Iz: You stole my head Just kidding! I like the look of both your character and the vig, the only thing that bugs me is his blonde hair, but that's just me! cralegoboy: Your entry is very interesting, he is the epitemy of crazy Muggle-loving wizards! Your vig is very nice as well, with all the stuff on his shelf, but I dont know why those cheese slopes are there. Matn: I love yours as well. The vig is very nice, and I love the pose you put on your character, care to reveal how you did that? I love the backstory, I believe that event happened in the books too, which gives you a Venetan: What can I say, your character is absolutely amazing! I would really like to know how you made him! turambar: I like the idea of the character, but I think your vig could use a little more detail. Gregorovich: I would love to comment on yours, but I am afraid I cannot see your pictures kevin1990: I rather enjoy your entry, and the technique for those sunflowers are amazing. Your character's backstory is pretty good too, though I dont know how I feel about the use of nearly all of McGonnagall. Quote
