Hi!

I've stumbled upon several people talking about the Unimog being the return of pneumatics and others wanting a return of pneumatics. What rock have these people been hiding under?

Looking at the 47224c01 Pneumatic Cylinder with 2 Inlets and Rounded End Medium (48mm) and what sets it comes with:

2002: Dacta Service pack 970118 Pneumatic Cylinder

2003: 8455 Back-hoe Loader

2004: 8439 Front End Loader

2005: 8421 Mobile Crane

2006: 8285 Tow Truck

2007: none

2008: Dacta set 9641 Mechanisms Pneumatics Add-On Set

2009: none

2010: 8049 Tractor with Log Loader (also has "x191c01 Yellow Pneumatic Pump Small")

2011: 8110 Unimog (could be a different cylinder but it do have pneumatics)

Between 1985 and 2003 we had the "2793c01 Pneumatic Cylinder with 2 Inlets Medium (48mm) with Black Top" (kinda strange to have two different cylinders in production at the same time, but it was strange times back then). In that time the only years which did not see something containing Pneumatics was: 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990 and 1991.

Are people thinking that linear actuators = no more pneumatics?

I guess this is aimed at me :laugh:. By return I meant the return of large pneumatic sets in a similar ilk to the 8868. The last pneumatic set I really liked was the 8439 :classic: and that was 6 years ago...

I know TLG stated LA's are not the Pneumatic's systems replacement, I just wish they would hurry up with more pneumatic sets (and hopefully new pneumatic parts!)

I guess there is a lot of love for pneumatics then :wink:. I do think the LA's are a good addition to the technic world, and I think they would be particulary really suited in robotics fields along with the mindstorms set.

when the LAs were launched a lot of people (me included) were concerned that this could be the end for pneumatics, however with 8049 coming out last year and statements from Lego themselves thankfully we have been shown this is not the case,

But I agree, the Unimog is a fresh breeze in several regards: It's a new type of model (sort of) and it's the first flagship with pneumatics since 2006.

Since I got back into Technic this year (after 20 years of hiatus)..I haven't really had a chance to re-experience pneumatics. It was back in the early 80's when I played with Lego's pneumatic excavator. So yes the Unimog is highly anticipated, and exactly what I'll be getting once it's out on sale.

Well after 2006 pneumatics seemed to have disappeared from the mainstream (the Dacta pack not really counting) and during that time the new Linear Actuators were introduced and used in many models that previously would probably have been pneumatic. So it's easy to see why people were inclined to think they'd been phased out.

Really the release of 8049 last year was evidence that this wasn't the case, though many saw that as quite a disappointing model. Hence the excitement over the Unimog, a big, exciting looking set with pneumatics for the first time in 5 years.

Yes, Tobbe. You couldn't help thinking otherwise, could you ?.

If you refer to your own listing above (with my comments) 4 years passed by with Pneumatics out of bounds - the longest period of no Pneumatics since today's Pneumatics were launced.

And in the meantime it seemed like LEGO was so very keen on proving that LA's and PF's could do the job that Pneumatics used to do in the more complex kind of sets.

And the first revival of Pneumatics after this 4-year period of (LEGO's own) LA/PF-euphoria was in a mid range set only, that could suggest that it was launched only in order to get rid of the remaining Pneumatic parts in stock.

But now, 5 years later, LEGO has proved otherwise by launching the top-of-the-line and in some respects State of the Art #8110 Unimog (that very well might end on top of my own list of favorite Technic sets of all times!), where Pneumatics play a main role.

You see, that's the big news - on top of the Unimog being "big news" in its own right, of course.

I agree :classic: . I was in my dark ages in 2006 - and the 8285 really did not appeal enough to me to lure me out of the dark ages having only one differential and only one pneumatic cylinder,pump and switch :sad:. I am just very very glad to see the Unimog :classic:

I agree, I am really happy to see the Unimog coming out as a pnumatic system fan - despite what lego said it's future did look bleak. I just hope the Unimog has a decent compressor and PF controllable pneumatic switches would be pure awesomeness (best of both worlds!).
