So how is the steering mechamism transferred to the chassis from the axle?

See my picture. It is the yellow marked axle, that transfers the steering momentum to the wheels.

Gerhard

Conchas/ Conchinhas has a 7-part video review series of the Lego 8110 Unimog U400 set. :cry_happy: Here are the first two YouTube videos -- click on the hyperlink to have the option to view them in High Definition (HD):

of 7 -- The Portal Axles:

of 7 -- The Chassis Internals:

These reviews are wonderful! They let us see, how this sweetness will work later in our own hands!!:thumbup: Many thanks to Conchas!

It seems, as the front axle has less travel than the rear axle. Is it like that?

Gerhard

Cant wait to watch the movies 4 to 7.....

Conchas has taken the time to show us the complexity of the 8110 unimog!

(Even when it shows us some of the limitations of building with lego parts)

so @ conchas: MORE MORE MORE

I remember reading on another forum where a poster critiqued another builder's all wheel drive model and claimed as a purist that they were "shocked a little" that it used 2 different types of differential boxes. And yet 2 years later, TLC is doing the same thing.

as seen from the video the portal axle system must have huge friction because when conchas was turning the wheel it drived the transmission rather than the wheel directly across from it, i suppose it must be the wheel adapter, the grey piece that has the pin connections snaps into the light grey portal axle part the adaption must be super frictiony D: sucking more power from the motors, alas i think i will stick to the proven method of using the technic triangle pieces to create a portal axle

It is unleashed! The Unimog is said to be available in the German LEGO stores (seen at Hamburg, MUC)! :classic:

Yup, it is already on Bricklink from German sellers!

ALL of the new parts for the 8110 will be available from Lego Direct on July 2nd... They have all of the prices for the parts now... None of them seem to be too high... The new shocks are $1.91 USD, The Hub is $1.04 and the new portal part is $2.08, I believe the new tires were $4.54... They also have the prices for all of the new orange parts too...

Just thought that I would give everyone a heads up in case they wanted to try out the new parts before buying the set....

Yup, I saw it in the Oberhausen Lego store on Friday the 24th

(the other two new trucks too as a matter of fact)

Looking at 0:49 at video 2/7, he turns the front axles, which in turn turns the engine but also the rear axle, indicating that the rear axle at least has very little friction. In the other video when he turned the wheel and the other one didn't turn, looking at it I suspect it's nothing more the the other wheels inertia preventing it moving. There was no engine attached at the time so the transmission had hardly any resistance to move. So I am still hopeful that there is very little friction in these new parts. We shall have to wait and see, but if the friction is low (which I think it is) then these are gonna be way better than the triangle pieces for making portal axles, i'm already planning a monster truck using these!

BTW am I the only one who is gonna wait till christmas day to build this beauty? It's gonna drive me nuts

Sorry for offtopic, but where do you get those prices?

Just came across this interesting illustration by Barry Bosman (Barman):

Looks like the new parts fit great inside the power puller wheels too :cry_happy:

It looks like these would indeed be useful for those huge Tatra 8x8 Trial Trucks!

In regards to the possible friction issue with these new parts, one could always LUBRICATE them with the 20-weight RC Shock Oil, or (heh heh) with Extra Virgin OLIVE OIL. :classic:

Contact Lego Shop at Home, ask for replacement parts and give them the 7 digit number from the back of the instructions book scans.... Prices may vary by country...
