frontier74 Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) Same size as the 8258? I'm looking at that right now and to me it seemed like the Unimog was about the size from the cab to the grey barrier-thing. No wonder it has so many pieces... Edited July 25, 2011 by frontier74 Quote
davidmull Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 this isnt looking good for the 1st of august, toy shops here never heard of it and other dont even have it on there website but do have 8109! Quote
frontier74 Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) Yeah, I saw the bucket truck at Toys R Us. Anyway, has this happened before last year with the 8043? Was everyone in the dark too? Edited July 25, 2011 by frontier74 Quote
Sokratesz Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Intertoys, a major dutch toy store franchise has them listed for €190 but 'not yet available'. Quote

censtar Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I ordered my Unimog on July 7th on buch.de (German online bookstore that sells toys as well) because they had 20 % discount on all toys, and now I just received the shipping notification. So I get my 8110 for 139 € (they normally sell it for 173,99) tomorrow :-) I could've bought it back in June in the Lego Store coz I live in Frankfurt and the Lego Store here had some of them when I was there back then, but the 190 € price tag was simply too much... I went to pick it up and the lady was really nice. So I have no experience with her shipping, but I have confidence she will ship in an acceptable manner. I would definitely take my chances! The box is now in front of me, eagerly awaiting to be opened. Btw, I noticed the box is German/English and not Dutch/English, but I couldn't care less. That's probably part of the reason the price is pretty low. OMG the Wheels!!!! P.S. I hope you mean your August salary, not September Edited July 27, 2011 by Gekke Ted Quote
AndoS Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Do you think that the "new patch" of improved Unimog with redesigned parts are already on sale or there are still risk to get "old" version of Unimog. A. Quote
Pauger Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 (edited) Are the unimog's tires the same size as the old 24*43 tires? Edited July 27, 2011 by Pauger Quote
Nazgarot Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Are the unimog's tires the same size as the old 24*43 tires? They are bigger. About 12,5 studs vs the old 24*43 tire with 10,25 stud, and a slight bit wider as well. -ED- Quote

There might be a risk, but ordering them at a store which has received their supplies recently (i.e. since yesterday), I think you're pretty safe. They are bigger. About 12,5 studs vs the old 24*43 tire with 10,25 stud, and a slight bit wider as well. -ED- Indeed Here are two pictures I snapped yesterday. Maybe they give you an impression. Quote
Sokratesz Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 I will definitely have to get two sets then just for the tires :D Quote
Jim Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 (edited) I will definitely have to get two sets then just for the tires :D Same here! It's nice to see there finally is a replacement for the old truck tires, dating back to 1975 or so. I wonder if Lego will release other sets with these wheels. Working in a larger scale opens up new possibilities. I also like the new Steering Portal Axle Housing. I heared some complaints that they can only be used for a single purpose, but I think they fit that purpose really nicely! The possibility to alter the gearing ration is a very nice touch. And they allow for a very easy, yet sturdy construction!! I am a big fan already. Another reason to buy an extra set Edited July 28, 2011 by Gekke Ted Quote

Jim Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 (edited) To be honest, I think it could have been much better. The turning radius of the vehicle is awfull. Maybe you are right. I only got to the rear wheel suspension yesterday Tonight I will finish the front wheel suspension and the rest of the midel. I did read that the turning radius is awful, but there would be a relative easy fix to this problem. Is it because of the design of the part or the implementation? What I really don't understand is why they didn't create two seperate parts for the Ball Joint and C-shape. In my opinion this would have been fairly easy and we would have a multipurpose Ball Joint and a multipurpose C-shape. Too bad. Edited July 28, 2011 by Gekke Ted Quote

Jim Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 I'm sure there will be plenty of modifications to fix that. My guess was indeed that's it's more an implementation issue, than a design issue. I will find out tonight Quote
Jim Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 (edited) So I have finally finished building the Unimog. Yesterday I teamed up with a buddy, but the total time to build the model should be around 7 hours. I'll just throw it out right away......I am not entirely enthusiastic, that is, I am not thrilled! However, every fan should have this set!! Let me tell you why.... The build of the model is fun, no more no less. There is nothing really special going on, besides the independent suspension usng the new parts (which is not that special either). It starts with the center of the body, much like the 8258 Crane Truck. Since the center is kinda square and you need to rotate often, it was sometimes a little bit confusing on which side you needed to work (this was also aggravated by the fact that I was using digital instructions). No biggie however. Attached to the center are the rear and front wheel suspension. The flexible rear wheel suspension is really awesome!! The front wheel suspension is a little bit sturdier, probably because of the angle of the suspension. Should have been as flexible as the rear suspension, but it's probably because the cabin will come on top of this. The steering takes a little too much force in my opinion. Sometimes I turn the knob, but the wheels don't even turn, which means the axles are torquing. The turning radius is poor, but this can be easily improved by removing the four 3/4 pins. However the steering of the model is an issue. After some hours you will have a nice looking body with lovely suspension and great wheels! After that it's a pretty standard build. Cabine, nothing new. Flatbed, nothing new. Crane, nothing new. Wrinch, nothing new. That sounds not too positive....well it just isn't (imho). However, the new orange parts are looking great, so that's a plus on the cabine! So, how is the playability? It's a little below par, compared to other models, like the Bulldozer or Excavator. Maybe it's not fair to compare the sets, because these are remote controlled sets, but they were also flagships, so why not. Controlling the Unimog with the battery box is cumbersome. Also switching between functions is not entirely intuitive. I found myself pulling the levers while I should have turned the switch on the battery box and so forth. My overall opinion is that is absolutely a great set! Buy it today if you have the opportunity! The new parts are great, the parts in new colors are great (the orange parts are great to combine with NXT models, which is nice) and did I mention the Wheels?! However, the set does not have the magic vibe, the Bulldozer and Excavator have. The Unimog lacks in finesse and playability. I will probably start deconstructing my Unimog today and use the parts to build other models. Preceding the build I was almost sure I would buy two models. Afterwards I will probably stick to ordering some new extra parts online or at Lego Direct. I need to think about it. So should you run off and buy it?! Absolutely!! Jim Posted July 29, 2011 Posted July 29, 2011 (edited) U don't at all sound very positive about the unimog,so thanks for bursting our bubble I didn't mean to scare you off or burst your bubble. Overall it's a great set! Absolute a must buy! Looking at it is just awesome! However, I don't have that Bulldozer or Excavator feeling. But maybe I am the only one. Hope to hear what others have to say about the Unimog. Is it against this forum policy btw to write a review like this? If so, I am sorry, I can remove it and I will never do it again On a positive note; I like to downplay your expectations, so afterwards you can say; wow this is better than I expected Edited July 29, 2011 by Gekke Ted Quote
