Very interesting explanations! With a new Knight Bus to be released in 2011, I look forward to see whether TLG will have modified the set design in order to use fewer purple pieces or (as Nabii just mentioned) use other colours to visually separate larger purple sections.

Anyway, while I'm frequently complaining about TLG always using the same boring primary colours for [choose one: city houses/cars/Technic/Creator sets], I understand that it makes more sense in many ways. The same white or red part will be used in many other sets during the year, while the sand green one may not. Also, kids just won't have as much fun playing with dark tan, sand blue and nougat than with the more vibrant 'firefighter red', 'police blue' and 'construction yellow'. Luckily there are AFOL-oriented and licensed sets that use a more interesting and varied colour palette.
