Posted January 25, 201114 yr I just won a auction! well, what should I do with a unopened 8851 pneumatic excavator? should I open it, or try to keep it till I'm 70 and sell it then? What do you use to do with MISB LEGO? should I make the worlds only unboxing video? Some ideas or thoughts? edit: read to the end before commenting Edited February 3, 201114 yr by blueShinyApple
January 25, 201114 yr I always have that dilema, but then I remember sets were meant to be opened, and there is nothing like peeling the plastic cover off the special parts in a technic set, those special part trays should so make a return,
January 25, 201114 yr Author I always have that dilema, but then I remember sets were meant to be opened, and there is nothing like peeling the plastic cover off the special parts in a technic set, those special part trays should so make a return, mmmm...
January 25, 201114 yr open it when you are 70! You might mentally be at the right age again.. but seriously, nice find!!
January 25, 201114 yr I have won a few sought after MISB sets, and I never have that dilema, I just open them and build them wihout a second thought. Although with these sets I usually take them apart again and re-bag the pieces as if new, but I would never sell them so I might as well build them like they were meant to be. But for sure an unboxing video is a good idea so we can share it!
January 25, 201114 yr But for sure an unboxing video is a good idea so we can share it! I also always open them, but I agree with the video idea. Since no one may find one of these unopened again, it is your duty to record the state of the unopened packaging for posterity.
January 25, 201114 yr I guess it depends on the cost, or if you really could sell it winning lots of money... but... in a lego forum ... we're for the action So ... enjoy! Do you need another word?
January 25, 201114 yr I would say go ahead and enjoy it. I have accumulated a ton of MISB sets over the years and open them without a second thought, although I space out the builds over time. It might be fun to take a picture of the boxes with all the stuff in the parts trays. I've started doing that these days, just because the old boxes looked so cool while still packaged. I think the prices of classic 80s/90s Technic sets have actually dropped in the last few years, both new and used ones. The flagship sets will always command a high premium, but I got a bunch of nice deals on MISB sets last year.
January 25, 201114 yr Open it! MISB toy collectors are weird :D Toys are for playing with. Otherwise it's just a bunch of expensively-extracted hydrocarbons sitting in a pulped dead tree.
January 25, 201114 yr Toys are for playing with. +1 Buying toys to keep them MISB ? What for ? To make money ? Actually, the question you must answer is : "What do I prefer : money or Lego ?" Hope you know the right answer. :p Edited January 25, 201114 yr by Anio
January 25, 201114 yr Author Since no one may find one of these unopened again, it is your duty to record the state of the unopened packaging for posterity. wait wait wait.. Duty?.. I aint got no duties..! No, ofcourse I'll film it Make lots of filming, stopmotion spinnig box.., filming the opening second with five cams, so I can make it 3D, all the stuff like that and btw, can you guess what I paid for it??
January 26, 201114 yr can you guess what I paid for it?? You paid 50 Pounds for it (about $80.02) on this recent eBay auction. Good deal!
January 26, 201114 yr Nice buy. I bought one Technic MSIB before and it was opened when I got home. I don't think Technic is supposed to sit in a box.
January 26, 201114 yr Looks good I just bought a MISB #8829 Buggy for EUR20,- (sorry had to mention that ^^)
January 26, 201114 yr If you plan to open it: Sell it MISB on BrickLink, buy another copy used and spend the money earned on more bricks...
January 26, 201114 yr Why do the pneumatic cylinders only have one port in them or are they the old type ones?
January 26, 201114 yr Author You paid 50 Pounds for it (about $80.02) on this recent eBay auction. Good deal! WRONG! I bought it on the "swedish ebay", tradera, for 360 SKR (about $50 BUT a lego set costing 360 skr in sweden would cost $36 in america, so it was really cheap ) but THAT BOX! it's just beautiful! longing for the package to arrive
January 26, 201114 yr Why do the pneumatic cylinders only have one port in them or are they the old type ones? Read the explanation here.
January 26, 201114 yr I remember buying an opened but mint copy of this set for £20 not long ago and when I removed the tray, there was an extra full set of tracks undernieth! That was a good day
January 27, 201114 yr @ blueShinyApple: You really got a good deal on your 8851 set! In case you don't open your box, here is an excellent of the set done by redgoldeyes using Autodesk Inventor 2010 software:
January 27, 201114 yr WRONG! I bought it on the "swedish ebay", tradera, for 360 SKR (about $50 BUT a lego set costing 360 skr in sweden would cost $36 in america, so it was really cheap ) This one then: http://www.tradera.com/LEGO-8851-Gravskopa-Ooppnad-forpackning-1980-tal-auktion_180409_126093183 Good for you I did not see that one. I've given up on Tradera, too many people bidding waaay over BrickLink-prices. (Tips: Svenskt LEGO-forum finns på swebrick.se )
