MattZitron Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I'm sure you guys have heard about the new Doctor Who building sets. Well they've released pics. I'm torn. On the one hand, I love Lego. I don't like other brick brands. But on the other, theses sets look great. And I LOVE Doctor Who. And all 11 Doctors in micro figure (Character avoiding lawsuits) form. It's almost a childhood dream come true (Offical Lego Who being the dream.) Please tell me I'm not a monster!! Quote
Peppermint_M Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Why do you have to be confined to one brand? If you like the theme, the lisence or some other feature, why not pick up a few? I picked up minimates for the characters, MB for the weapons, Cobi for accesories. Looks like I will be getting this for awesome Doctor Who stuff Go with what you want to do. I mean, you get your favourite brand cola because you like the taste, but if the rival comes out with a flavour you want to try, you wouldn't not get it out of loyalty to the other. Quote
prateek Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) Go ahead, who's stopping you? The quality of the bricks looks decent, but the figures look a bit below-par. Good luck finding these for a relatively low price Edited January 25, 2011 by prateek Quote
lightningtiger Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Impressive selection, it will sell in the UK well......but else where ? But I didn't see.....K-9.....what's Doctor Who without K-9 and his laser nose eh ? The quality seems to appear to be very good......I guess those of us in the land of Oz will wait to the ABC Shop's start stocking them to truly judge these sets ! Keep on time travelling ! Quote
Delta 38 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Well, I know what you mean. I've had strong urges to buy those Halo Megabloks sets (being a large Halo fan myself), but I haven't. It also just so happens that I'm a fan of Doctor Who as well. But yeah, personally, it doesn't matter either way. The only reason why I haven't bought the whole lineup is mostly devotion to Lego. Quote
sok117 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 That does look rather tempting, and I've had my urges to with the megablocks Halo as stated above, but usually things like these pass, but DW, now that is pretty flipping sweet, good thing I'm in Canada and won't come across these. For you, I'd say go for it, they look pretty cool and I bet have a lot of collecters value, Lets just hope those collectible figs have barcodes Quote
Siegfried Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 They look pretty cool. For now though I'm temptation free; I don't like the new show. That does look rather tempting, and I've had my urges to with the megablocks Halo as stated above, but usually things like these pass, but DW, now that is pretty flipping sweet, good thing I'm in Canada and won't come across these. I bought a Halo MB fig pack. Quote
SpiderSpaceman Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I bought a Halo MB fig pack. Same. the transparent soldier is straight up awesome. I can't see myself ever getting into Doctor Who, but that big yellow playset is right up my alley. I might hang on to the picture for reference, build some bits like it out of my quality Danish materials. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Go for it! Personally, my philosophy is that while clone brand pieces are out of the question for MOCs, they're perfectly acceptable for minifigs and minifig customization. Quote
Peppermint_M Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Another thing you've got to remember is that TLG won't do Doctor Who because the market is fractionaly small when made global. There is no profit or even many sales in any country other than the UK. Over here it is an inndelible part of culture, in the rest of the world it is cult and niche. Now, Character have had great success selling action figures and playsets based on Doctor Who in the UK, now they are sliding over to some building sets, a popular choice of toy with a popular theme will do well. There is plenty of source material for them to draw from. A thought to consider: If a customiser were to sell custom Cyberbaddies and TankSuits (after all, the BBC holds the rights to the actual names) would you buy them? I do believe this coming easter will be fun for me and my collection! I wonder how hard an army of Daleks would be to create? Quote
Eskallon Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Go get them if you like them, they seem good quality and let's face it, Lego are never going to produce there own sets so you may aswell get them while they last. I might even get a few, they look fairly good. Quote
Jargo Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Playsets look like they have some interesting parts. I'll probaly wait for reviews before deciding whether to buy or not. The plastic looks a little on the low end of quality in the pictures. Quote
Dunjohn Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I'm not a fan of Dr. Who so these sets hold zero interest for me. However, if I were in your shoes, I might get them and just keep them separate from my Lego. Probably not that hard to do. Quote
IAmWillGibson Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I got some of the blind-packed HALO figures, mostly because I'm kinda slutty for blind packs, despite hating them, AND I was trying to find LEGO minifigs at the time. I also have a number of the C3 sets that go with the Minimates. The quality on those bricks is generally fairly okay, but the designs were sorta crud. Still, the C3 Batcave I have does the trick when I get sad I was unable to afford the LEGO one. I still have a real love for Minimates, too. But yeah, don't feel bad. Do what you like! To be completely frank, while I'm not in love with Mega Blox by any stretch, I find the anti-Mega Blox sentiment around these parts a smidge off-putting sometimes. LEGO is clearly the superior product, but we can and should love the lesser makes when they offer something like this: stuff LEGO can't or wont. Quote

A lot of it is because this is a LEGO site, not an it-works-with-LEGO site. It's not "anti" as such, it's just off topic. Quote
vexorian Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 (edited) Well, my experience with things like spiderman tells me that no matter how much you like a license, brick sets are not worth it if they are not LEGO. Just the visual incompatibility between the mini-figs reduces the worth of having such figs a lot, for example, in this case, what fun would there be without civilians? . But it is up to you, if you actually like those uncanny figures, go for it. I think the dalek would be much better brick-build instead of a single mold. Edited January 26, 2011 by vexorian Quote
Enpaz Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 If you really love Doctor Who, then of course you can buy them! But don't see them as additions to your Lego collection - because they aren't. Assemble them and have fun, but don't mix them with Lego. That'd be nasty. My advice is: Think about them they way you think about other toys without a relation to Lego, e.g. action figures. Keep 'em seperated and you'll live a long and happy life. Quote
Plissken Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 They look interesting, but I don't think a german seller will pick them up The more I look on the pics, the more I like it. I think I really need the 11 Doctors set Quote
Dunjohn Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I think the dalek would be much better brick-build instead of a single mold. It is brick-built. Quote
Zeya Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 My two cents: wait about three weeks to let the novelty wear off a bit. If the excitement and appeal hasn't worn off, then go for it. But keep in mind that their bricks probably won't work with Lego so much. Dr. Who isn't as popular here in North America as it is in Britain. I know one or two people who watch the show. I've seen a couple episodes and it was pretty cool; at least it's one of the few outlets for science fiction right now. (I mean what else is there, maybe Stargate in its fifteenth season? lol). I personally love Top Gear and can't get enough of it. They just started airing an American version of Top Gear by the way... but now I'm rambling. I love cars. Quote
Ceroknight Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 (edited) Im hoping those will in Canada! I sometimes buy other brands if I really like them, Halo MB for instance. What I don;t like about the picture is the multiples of the white and other daleks. there is only one supreme dalek!! Edited January 28, 2011 by ceroknight Quote
Mr Spielbrick Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Heh... Been hoping for official LEGO Doctor Who since I found out about the show in 2007. (Yeah yeah, late to the party, but I'm not from Britain!) And now there's this. Which means, in my opinion: - The figs don't mix well with LEGO minifigures (downside), but are compatible with LEGO bricks (upside). - Probably not available directly in my country. BUGGER! Thank heavens for internet shopping, though. - The actual brick-built parts of the sets look mostly uninteresting to me, for lack of detail. Especially the interior of the TARDIS doesn't whirr my sonic screwdriver. However, the exterior blue box looks iconic and beautiful and exactly right for the microfigs. Must have. - Battle packs! Cybermen! Daleks! Don't personally care for a whole army of Weeping Angels, but they look good too. - In reaction to an earlier posting member: there seems to be a civilian in the Cybermen conversion room set. - We get: all Doctors from 1963 to now (!!!), Amy, Rory and River Song. Niiice. Already mentioned the Cybermen, Daleks and Weeping Angels. Plus there'll be Smilers and Silurians. So, lots of figures with which to make various stories. All in all, it looks good to me. If they become availble through online shops, I'll definitely be buying the blue box TARDIS, the eleven Doctors (swoooon!) and a bunch of Cybermen and Daleks. I guess there'll be more waves to come, so here's hoping for more future and past stuff. Ood? Former companions? Please? As for the original question that started this thread, HELL YES, buy as much as you need. Because we NEED it. (Cue discussion about capitalism and creating consumer desire.) We love the Doctor too much to let brand wars get in our way. God knows I bought MegaBloks Pirates of the Caribbean when I thought LEGO would never get to make their version. Didn't feel bad about that for even a fraction of a moment. Still glad I have those, as they're little works of art in their own right. Quote
Izzy Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one or two of those Daleks. And I definitely want a sonic screwdriver. I do so hope it is compatible. Because if it is, I will definitely be mixing it with my LEGO. Of cousre! Why the hell not. Does anyone else find it funny that is it blind packed? Quote
Peppermint_M Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Kids love a mystery Myself, I love the thought that I could pick up an entire box and make my money back selling to uptight AFOLs as "custom" Doctor Who Lego figure parts. Quote
