Praiter Yed Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 (edited) Updated Design September 2016: lxf file available from brickshelf.com Lego Luke's Landspeeder on flickr Original Post February 2011: I've been tinkering with this for over a year now, mostly in LDD, but partially in bricks too. I'm quite pleased with bits of it but other bits, not so much. I put the stickers on the front today and they're a massive disappointment, it looked better without them. I'm tempted to get some stuff to do decals and give that a go, but I'm also tempted to scrap the front end and try again. Then there's the colour, I had hoped TLG would bring out more pieces (tiles) in medium dark flesh but now I doubt they will. And the brick arch that forms the 'wings' at the back has now been released in tan - should I re-colour all the medium dark flesh & dark tan bits? I'm sort of against that, because if I ever do a Tatooine diorama the speeder will look camouflaged and I've spent WAY too much on this already. I just don't know what to do. If anyone would care for the instructions the lxf file can be found in KDM's excellent Eurobricks MOC LXF Index topic. More pics here when public. Edited September 9, 2016 by Praiter Yed Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Great job, Praiter Yed. The SNOT work is very nice, and I love the use of the printed Astromech torso from Bounty Hunter Pursuit. Quote
Rufus Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Wow, that's rather nice, Praiter Yed. Great SNOT work. I love how you've done the cockpit It looks like it might be quite fragile, though What are the tan pieces at the rear in front of the 1x1 black plates? Quote
prateek Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Awesome! I've been following your many versions on LDD, and I've got to say, this is the best one! I love the silver front, and the flashlight thing on the hood is good. Quote
Lord Of The Fries Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 Love it,Love it,Love it.Your so lucky to have that awesome landspeeder in your hands ! Love the design of the engines at the back (especially the damaged one ). Quote
Eichhorn Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Absolutely amazing! Love the colors (I'm a sucker for dk-tan) the SNOT and especially the damaged engine. Just an all in all wonderful build! Quote
Nightshroud99 Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Meh perhaps it's just me, but I think it looks horrible. It's a bit small and too SNOTy Maybe make it a little longer? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 What are the tan pieces at the rear in front of the 1x1 black plates? I think they're the new 2 x 2 tiles with one stud in the center. Quote
XimenaPaulina Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Excellent MOC Praiter! I loved this when I first saw this in LDD and it even looks better in real brickbuild. The overall SNOT build is just impressive, and this one puts the TLG model to shame. Great job! Quote
Fallenangel Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Meh perhaps it's just me, but I think it looks horrible. It's a bit small and too SNOTy Maybe make it a little longer? Considering the size of 7110 I'd say this is a bit too big. Maybe you're just used to the enormous model from 4501 and 8092. I would lose the tan... The side-mounted engines seem too far from the main body. Quote
Praiter Yed Posted February 6, 2011 Author Posted February 6, 2011 Thanks to everyone for the nice comments - but not you Nightshroud99 . I've cherry picked a few to reply to; Wow, that's rather nice, Praiter Yed. Great SNOT work. I love how you've done the cockpit It looks like it might be quite fragile, though What are the tan pieces at the rear in front of the 1x1 black plates? Thanks Rufus - It's actually VERY sturdy. Originally the rear tail fin had a very flimsy connection but now it's all held together by a pretty strong frame underneath, and the plates at the side. The weakest part is the floor of the cockpit if you give it a good push it will fall out, but it's strong enough to push a minifig onto without any trouble. Oh, and Brickdoctor's right about the 2 x 2 tiles with one stud in the centre. Awesome! I've been following your many versions on LDD, and I've got to say, this is the best one! I love the silver front, and the flashlight thing on the hood is good. Thanks prateek, I had no idea anyone was following my obsessive updates Love it,Love it,Love it.Your so lucky to have that awesome landspeeder in your hands ! Love the design of the engines at the back (especially the damaged one ). Cheers, I'm glad you like it so much - but you could have one too - just download the lxf and order the parts. Then make it better, post it here and I will copy your improvements. Meh perhaps it's just me, but I think it looks horrible. It's a bit small and too SNOTy Maybe make it a little longer? It's definitely not too small but I think I understand your 'SNOTy' comment. Personally I only count the rear as 'proper' SNOT work but I suppose strictly speaking the nose & sides are SNOT too. But I guess you mean the combined smooth finish of SNOT & tiles. When on display it doesn't look much like Lego and I do generally prefer more 'studs up'. With this in mind I tried using plates rather than tiles on the bonnet but it just interfered with the greebles in front of the windscreen and didn't match the rear. Considering the size of 7110 I'd say this is a bit too big. Maybe you're just used to the enormous model from 4501 and 8092. I would lose the tan... The side-mounted engines seem too far from the main body. 7110 was my first lego Star Wars set - a friend bought it for me as a Joke - of course I loved it but it wasn't enough to drag me out of my dark-age (I'm sorry to say fallenangel, it was 6212 that did that (and I still haven't forgiven you for making me hate it )). I agree, mine is too large - my aim was to get something closer in size to 7110 (which I think is about the right scale) but with more detail. It's smaller than 4501 & 8092 so I'm part way there. Also I've done a comparison with the schematics on Wookipedia and you're also right about the engines. I'm now wondering if I can pull the 'wings' in a stud each. If I lose the tan, what would I replace it with? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 If I lose the tan, what would I replace it with? The correct color is sand red - if you can find any. Quote
Brickus Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Excellent Landspeeder Praiter Yed, one of the best I've seen. Quote
Legostein Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Hello! A lovely speeder! The half arches really do a great job at the rear of the speeder. My favourite detail is the open patchwork engine which makes it perfectly authentic. Cheers, ~ Christopher Quote
Praiter Yed Posted February 7, 2011 Author Posted February 7, 2011 The correct color is sand red - if you can find any. No, the parts I need aren't available in sand red. I was hoping for more parts in medium dark flesh because I think it's just as good as sand red - I'd say the actual speeder is a dirty light orange. I used the dark tan because I felt it complimented medium dark flesh well in the POP sets. At the time of ordering parts I could only get the arches at the back in black, white and medium dark flesh but now I can get them in tan - so I could now go down the route TLG chose and do the whole speeder in dark red and tan. It's a dilemma. Excellent Landspeeder Praiter Yed, one of the best I've seen. Hello! A lovely speeder! The half arches really do a great job at the rear of the speeder. lightningtiger Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Excellent work 'Praiter Yed' - I really like the tiling to give a smooth appearance in places and the odd features like the hood headlight piece that actually makes this MOC pop ! Great job and may the brick be with you ! Quote
DS2626 Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Great job! But I was just wondering what is this SNOT everyones talking about? is it some sort of modeling material or glue or something? Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Great job! But I was just wondering what is this SNOT everyones talking about? is it some sort of modeling material or glue or something? Studs Not On Top. Refers to basically any brick turned on it's side or upside down. (because the studs are no longer on top) You can use it to achieve more complex shapes, intricate patterns, or smooth surfaces, to name a few uses. It's nearly impossible to make a good model without some use of SNOT, however small, but the technique has it's downsides, notably that a panel will turn out much thicker than it would if a plate was used. Fallenangel Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Is it some sort of modeling material or glue or something? Nooo.... most of us wouldn't dream of gluing our LEGO together. Quote
thelegomaster100 Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 thats awesome, actually I think it's better than real set well done! Quote
Cutty Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) Although I'm quite disaffected to Star Wars nowadays there's still some sympathetic nerve for the OT and especially "A New Hope" in me. May I say I like your rendition of the Landspeeder far more than all of the official versions ever released? You captured the basic shape and proportion while doing so in a fresh and very very effective way. In fact I froze for a moment looking at the pictures and thought to myself "Hey! This makes you want to watch Star Wars again!" which is a RARE occurrence with me, really and quite an unusual one as well! If you take this as an indication for quality I don't dare to impose, but you made a former fan very happy with this build. Thank you! Be well all! Cutty Edited February 9, 2011 by Cutty Quote

The Builder Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 I like how you've added the "Titanium" look. Overall, its really good. Well done! Quote
