Hey, thats a nice little ship ya got there Evil Willy!

The dark red and black color scheme goes well together,.

And the sails look great of course.

Ooopss...I somehow click on report instead of this...

So i will repeat my message...

As I ow just Santa Cruz Ship :'-( I never made some effective MOC...

And Willy's is perfect...It's a good looking lil'ship...I think you better try with sails like 6286 have...

And,sorry mate, but the name lotus is never going to be a pirate-ship-name...

Everything else is perfect....

Greetings from Serbia

Thanks for the comments, I have to say that I agree the name isnt perfect... When I come up with something better ill change the name but I wont force myself to figure out a new name..It will come. As for the sails I love them. And I would not change them for any in the world. That of course is my opinion.

Honor is for the samurais. At least offer some kind of nominal prize.

As to evil willy, well that ship is stunning. Brilliant colors, heavy armament, and a smooth design. But might i just see the captains quarters?

This isn't a contest but I will make you this offer. If you can build a ship better than I can I will give you a prize. A very nice prize. Since Phes is the pirate expert around here we will let him decide which of the ships is better. If I build the better ship all I ask is that you put a line in your signature that says "Honor is better than prizes."

oh its just so far there havent been many replies, so i was suggesting you raise the stakes, or rather make them. Anyway i didnt mean that i would be interested in competing. So i am going to decline your proposition and put that line in my signature anyway.

This sounds like a cool idea... I may try it. :-)

How will this work if there's no deadline?

Or we could create a poll so the decision isn't in any way bias. But if there is no deadline then when shall it be decided who has the best ship?

That is why it was a challange and not a contest. This isn't supposed to be a who has the bigger and better collection or who can spend more time building. It isn't who has the best MOC skill either. It is about seeing what other people have done and then trying to do something yourself.

This thread is about learning to build better. Learning more about ships and maybe even more about historical pirates and the era they lived in. I never intended this to be a contest of any kind.

I issued the challange to Mr. Cleese as he wanted a reason to build. Having LEGO, a little spare time and some imagination is reason enough for most people. I am just trying to make it easier for people to step out and try building what they may not normally build. Or maybe even get them to look at it as a friendly competition.

No deadlines, no specific rules, no prizes. Just building fun and getting better at MOCing.

I have a few things to finish up before I can start on my ship. I am looking at starting this weekend hopefully. If you really want to challange me to a build off I'd suggest you start soon as well. I will be completing my ship before July ends. It is only fair to have restricted build times for such a challange.

Build for fun.

MOC on!

So if there's no deadline then when do I (or whoever ends up being involved) determine which is the best ship? Or is it whichever ship is the best at the time which mean it could change from day to day?

This is a great idea nonetheless!

Well, I have gotten started on my ship. She is going to be huge once she is done.

I am skimping on the lower deck details for a few reasons. Firstly, I don't have any cannons to put down there. I also don't want to try have a special way to lift up the upper decking as the ship need to be playable and sturdy versus playable and detailed but fagile. Lastly, I don't want to waste parts on an area that is little more than filler for the model. Guts are not needed for this ship beacuse they will never be seen. Another good reason as the ship will not be built for very long unless I like it very much. That rarely happens with any of my MOCs so I would say scrapped for parts in 2 weeks once completed.

I am enjoying the challange and I am thinking of how I will build the upper decks and what to include in the cabin. I am not sure what detail I want for the rigging yet either. Some detail but not like those accurate ship models.

I am actually looking forward to making a land based pirate scene or docking area to go with this or maybe in future. So little time, so many ideas.

Anyway, check out the little picture I made in paint below to see what I have done so far. The green is sand green which looks like oxidized copper and the gray is infact iron plating to protect the first of the lower decks. The rest of the ship will feature similar colors when completed and the sails will be all custom made with custom patterns.

I also have a ship started, I'll get pictures in as soon as I actually have a front for it haha. It has 2 mid sections.

By the way, what are the classes for ships? I only know of Frigate and Man O' War.

Thanks.

Ok, I have some preliminary pics of the "Jolly Roger" ghost ship.

No sails and removed some rigging for a better view. Some of the pics are blury, sorry.

I'll work on some new photos soon.

This is ship from my Governors Mansion Work In Progress is the only ship I have...

Is it elligble?

I would think so. Sort of small and not much of a build but it is a ship. Did you add any details or improve it from the similar LEGO version?

Sailed ships (those used by pirates)

Barque (pronounced bark) is a three masted transport type of ship

Clipper (so named for speed) is a multimasted transport ship usually smaller in size (not in sail)

Dinghy (or rowboat) is a small craft that is either oar powered or sail powered (most large ships have one)

Keelboat (similar to a river boat) is a smaller ship used to navigate rivers

Catamaran (or multi hull) is a fast and small craft used for quick travel, large sail, more stable

Schooner known by having the sails in a line with the ship as opposed to across it (think windwaker not raft)

There are a lot of names but these are the basic types. Any one of them could and at one point probably were outfitted for war. Most ships were merchant or transport vessels though. There are other types of ships that are oar based such as a Galleon or the Viking Longboat also.

I think this ship is great. It has that spooky feel and look. The only thing really missing is the ghastly crew and some tattered sails. Be sure to make a separate thread for this once you get it finished. This is nice!

Ahem... Where are the Frigates and Galleons?

Wow that ship ,Ghostrealm, has to be the nicest ship I have seen, probabley ever. I love every detail of it the colors are perfect and the 45 degree railings up top are just beautiful. It certainly lacks sails but im sure that this ship will win over mine. Good job too you. I also love all the little details the skull in back, the bell in the ship(On deck) Superb!

Ahem... Where are the Frigates and Galleons?

Well the Barque and the Frigate are very similar. As times change so do names and just about everything else. The Greeks had galleons as did others before them I am sure. As ships progressed everything about them did also. The ships commonly refered to as pirate galleons were a form of Barque/Clipper/Schooner as all ships with sails are closely related. From what I have read it seems ship size, rigging type and purpose determined its name mostly along with the language the design originates from. So technically you could have a huge clipper though most were not huge or even mix the styles and create a new type of ship.

If we wanted to strat listing the ship types and names you would have to begin with "a log" and work your way up to hovercraft listing so many varieties and contry specific styles that you would have a list too long to bother reading. And that doesn't even begin to touch the developmental, futuristic or scifi type of stuff. *wacko*

As long as you know what you ship does it doesn't really matter what it is classed or called though. All proper ships should have a specific name of their own anyway. ;-)

Build what you like, call it what you want, geek over how many LEGO lives it took to adequetely feed the plastic sharks just off pirates cove. As long as it is fun, MOC on!
