Here is the wrong place to economize material. I'm dying to know what we will see inside the Black Pearl. I hope cannons "with" wheels... The problem is, if TLG puts all these extra parts in (cannon wheels etc) it pushes the set up into the next price bracket. Which reduces the potential target market.

Here is the wrong place to economize material. I'm dying to know what we will see inside the Black Pearl. I hope cannons "with" wheels... I have to say that I agree with you 100%. While I like to remain positive when I see Lego go for a certain artistic design I absolutly do not like it when Lego skimps on the quality. Lego could have done a whole lot better. The entire ship looks like an empty shell. There is no interior in the cabin, not even a door, there is no upper deck, and the cannonns don't have any kind of rig or wheels. Even the cannons on the Brick Beards Bounty had wheels. This is really beginning to remind me of the kinds of design flaws that Lego was making around 2004. I really wish that Lego would just push up the price bracket and give us at least a few more details. How many small parts would you need to make a doorway, a door, and wheels on the cannons. I mean that at least would push the ship up into average quality. I think that once the majority of people see this set in person and if the movie does not do well I think that this ship will not be a major seller.

February 19, 201114 yr I think the problem isn't details (to quote Monty Python, "Look at the BONES!") but that it's missing the RIGHT details, or IMPORTANT details. Well thats just it. The ship is an empty shell. It's got lots of details on the outside but, the inside is just well, empty. The cannons don't even have wheels. It's pathetic at best. I mean when LEGO did the PoP sets at least the sets had Ok interiors but, not even having a door to the cabin and wheels on the cannons is just plain pathetic. February 20, 201114 yr @ Jack Bricker: Absolutly right! I believe the Queen Anne's Revenge have place for 10 cannons. This ship would be a bestseller if every place have a cannon with wheels. That would be a ship including 10 cannons(!) Hello? And I believe these bricks would be not so expensive to produce. And now as your words would imply. This ship would be a bestseller (a expensive bestseller) if these would have more simple details inside this ship like doors, detailed cabin... (just see Imperial Flagship). But we talk here about "Pirates of the Caribbean" and no normal LEGO Pirates-theme. Here we have a exclusive expensive license-theme with "flash-heads" and high quality. And all fans of these license-series want to see high quality. Ok, and now also if I take a look of the Queen Anne's Revenge I have to say. Yes, the quality is very high, but if I see what is up inside the Queen Anne's Revenge... hmmm, not so much. My resume: This ship is a pre-product. And now the final-question! What is for this license-theme the right way to go. Have LEGO to go the expensive way? ->High quality, many details, design par excellence -or- Have LEGO to go the easy way. Good solid design, no much material, like the LEGO Classic-themes. I prefer the expensive way. I think LEGO have to make the best of every idea. Here is the wrong place to economize material. I don't mean LEGO have now to create only huge sets. But to meet the quality standard for Pirates of the Caribbean. Some examples: -Isla Muerta: Yes, that is a small nice set including important caracters. One boat, small rocks and some details. For this cave is the design "ok". But it could be better. -> I missing some dripstone columns, a small treasure-hill, ... if you watch the film-scene you will find more pertinent details. Now lets take a look of the minifigures. Yes, the design for every minifigure is very well. But what could LEGO make better. One look to Barbossa (skeleton) and you now what I mean. Yes, where are the excellente skeleton-torsos and skeleton legs for Jack-Sparrow and Barbossa. Torsos in skeleton-style including clothes in tatters and some pieces of meat. -> And now we would have a LEGO-set in a new quality. Plus it would give us a new perspective for the design for the other skeleton pirates. -> These skeleton pirates we would see including with the Black Pearl in another set. A real ghost-ship with sails in tatters with lot of ghost pirates and a frightened Maria Swan. LEGO, you have so much luck. You have the chance to create some of the best movie sailing ships of all time. Don't produce pre-products. Pirates of the Caribbean is worth much more.
February 20, 201114 yr To me it doesnt look like there is enough space for wheels on the cannons, the cannons are too close together.
February 20, 201114 yr Since most of the buzz is about the Queen Anne’s Revenge I would like to add my thoughts into the mix. The ship looks like a quite interesting ship to me, but it does have its pros and cons. Many of the flaws that people point out are nothing that hasn’t been seen before on other ships. People mention the lack of a deck, but among LEGO pirate ships it’s actually far more common not to have a deck rather than have one. The cannon system without wheels is rather similar to that on the Red Beard Runner. The cabin is apparently open with no doors and rather small, which seems rather similar to that on the Caribbean Clipper. I assume that sets are created with a balance between looks, cost and playability. A deck could limit playability a bit because most cannon systems requites the cannons to be moved. The deck might limit access to the lower floor if it is non-removable. The masts and sails can already be limiting the access, so a deck might make cannon movement even harder. There are also some other complains and some personal ones that I would like to add. The inaccurate flag is a bit odd, but nothing that can’t be fixed with 10min work on a computer. I’m a bit disappointed that 2 of the cannon ports on the side appear to only be there for show, but I have also heard that scare tactics like that were used in real life. I hope that the will be 4 cannons, but most pictures only show 3. On the positive side I also have a few things to say. 7 figures seem like a good number for a ship of this size. I prefer the old types of masts, but the parts that are used for keeping up the sails seem to be an improvement over the ones used on Brickbeards Bounty, castle the skeleton ship and troll warship. The figurehead looks really neat. The ship actually has an anchor too. The general level of detail is amazing to me at least.

While I do agree with you on some of that I would like to point out that the RBR is not one of LEGO's better ships and considering that this theme could be a major cash cow for LEGO I would expect that they would want to put as much detail into the ships as possible. I hate to say this but, the Queen Anne's Revenge reminds me of the Mega Bloks Pirates of the Caribbean ships which had a beautifully detail outside but, the inside had absolutly no detail at all. It's almost like an Easter egg shell; nice on the outside, empty on the inside. So, I do hope that LEGO will not botch up the Black Pearl and maby increase the parts cound before its release this fall. Slim chanch but possible. Edited February 20, 201114 yr by Jack Bricker
February 20, 201114 yr I just wanted to point out that the cannon system problem wasn't anything particularly new. Nor do I think that it's particularly good, while I do have a soft spot for the RBR, the cannon system only gets the job done on the most basic level and nothing more. In general I guess I have lower standards than some people. Although if you compare it to say the Indiana Jones sets it could be a little better, but it is quite similar to traditional pirates theme.
February 20, 201114 yr Personally, I don't care whether the cannons have wheels or not, but I will be disappointed if there's no interior. When I first saw it from the back with the magnificent window, I thought that there must be a grand interior, but now I'm not sure. I really hope the BP has an interior and comes with a human crew and a small amount of skeletons, not just a full crew of skeletons (please have Tia Dalma!).
February 20, 201114 yr Personally, I don't care at ALL about interior. It's all about how the ship looks on the outside to me. However, for those who do, you could probably take the QAR and add all the parts from the Captain's Cabin set to get a mediocre interior. That, or you could just make your own. I really like that window though, and I'm still eagerly awaiting (just as everyone is, I assume ) for pics of the Black Pearl.
February 21, 201114 yr Some of the sets are from the previous films. I would like to see the Singaporen ship and Davy Jones.
February 21, 201114 yr c-c-c-combo breaker. The smallest set, Captain's Cabin has the ship in the bottle and globe elements that are hard to ignore. I've already got a huge wishlist for 2011, but I've been planning a MOC of Mr. Krabs's house when Spongebob and Patrick go inside to paint it. Krabs has those ship in the bottles! The 12 dollar price tag is also drawing me in!
February 21, 201114 yr Maybe the QAR's cabin is so small is because - - the stuff from Captain's Cabin is supposed to go in the captain's cabin! This is a note of brilliance. Rather than having a cheesy small set and a more expensive ship, they've cut off $10 from the QAR and put in a small set. Just like the Classic Castle days' blacksmith shop and guarded inn. Good work, LEGO.

Good work, LEGO. Just form a pure mathematical point I doubt that this would work, I mean the shelves with the platform it is standing on is 14 studs wide, and the standard big ship-hull is 12 studs at it's widest point. Although most picture I have seen aren't particularly good for judging this I doubt that the cabin will be deep enough to have it standing along one of the sides. It might fit if you remove the plates it is standing on and switch the 1x4 slopes for some 1x1 bricks, a 6-8 studs wide shelf should be possible to fit in. I don't know how well the skeleton leg table would align with studs, but there is some wiggle room. The globe does not look like it could attach to a plate unless you extend the golden "pole" in the center.
February 21, 201114 yr It can fit easy if you take a few pieces off. I don't mind about that though, I just wanted them to make an actual door into the cabin. I could always make one though.
February 22, 201114 yr Wow not sure how I missed this! Been out of the loop for a bit so I must have missed this - 93 pages is a bit much to catch up on though, I'll just have a quick flick through. The sets look pretty good, I might even review one sometime! :p
February 26, 201114 yr Great pics! I want to have London escape immediately when they are released! I like the mill but it's too simple, a few stickers over there and a few over here. Thank's for the pictures!
March 1, 201114 yr Maybe this is crazy, but after reading that the Black Pearl is only going to be 800 pieces, I started amassing parts to do a Captain Green Hair-styled rebuild of it. Of course, I can't do TOO much until we actually see the ship, but the wheels are turning in the old noggin already. These sets are taking FAR too long to come out!
March 1, 201114 yr The Pirates of the Caribbean mini-site on LEGO .com is live! Well, actually it's a teaser site, like the Harry Potter one was, with the figures. Here is the link: Pirates of the Caribbean .
