Hello all, just a quick query on the book "Getting started with LEGO Trains". The writers web site is down, and Amazon lists it for $150+. Is it worth tracking down whilst patiently awaiting the next railbricks?

I have this. It's a good book with good advice and some nice instructions... but it's not essential. It was published about 8 years ago and many of the techniques mentioned are common knowledge today.

I paid $15 USD for mine a few years back which was a good deal, but $150.... *huh*

It's a basic book during the end of the 9V era with a retail/cover price of $19.99. My Own Train sets, the Super Chief, and sets available around this time are pictured. Some history of LEGO Trains is included and instructions to build a reefer, a diesel locomotive, and a container car. I'd pay around $20 for it but not much more. To me, it's more of a keepsake for train fans.

I would love to see a newer version with PF and more pictures of older sets.

I saw this book the other day on E-bay going for about £40 sorry don't know what that is in dollars, was going to buy it but brought more track instead for a bargain!:thumbup:

It's a shame there isn't more copy's out there I would like to get it but $150 is just daft even £40 is a lot for a book.

At least web.archive.org finds the old bricksonthebrain.com website concerning "Getting Started with LEGO Trains":

I still got a little recension of this book online on my website, sorry German only:

And this is/was the announcement from the publisher, NoStarch:

I don't know about the content of the book, but you can get it for around $45 from abebooks.com.

I like Jake McKee. He's a great guy. But this book is for those who are "getting started" ... I bet almost no one that is a regular reader of Eurobricks fits that description. Further, as other posters say, it's dated.

Unless you're a completist who has to have every LEGO book published I wouldn't recommend paying much over face value for it.

On the other hand, a complete set of back issues of Railbricks is free (in electronic form) and will have more train ideas in it, at all levels, not just at the beginner level, than this book does. The reverse challenges, in particular, are superb. But then I'm biased since I'm on the editorial board :)
