Anywho, this is a Lego Forum, filled to the brim with Lego fans. Most of those Lego fans are adults and teenagers, and they will give you the same exact answer every time: Get the Lego.

I disagree with Childish.... start building the City Modular sets... they are rated age 16 plus due to the complexity and detail.

Collect the regular city sets to augment these buildings. Add trains. The buildings that are discontinued use Ebay and Bricklink to

build your own or use Lego Factory (Digital Designer).

Psh, "The age thing". Just look around the forum. Look for topics that include the acronym "MOC". Do those look like they could have been built by children? Lego is an artistic medium for some. For others, it's a financial investment. For most of us on this board, it's a hobby; just like fixing cars or playing video games.

Sounds like a troll, but answer anyway... It's a hobby. Everyone's got a hobby. The people most likely to think LEGO is childish are the people whose only hobby is something as unproductive as watching other people play sports (or troll on the internet). I have nothing against spectator sports (although I prefer participating somehow), but at least with LEGO you have to unleash some creativity and you'll have something forever (if you want), something (besides saying "did you see that play?") you can share with other people (and your spouse/kids if/when you have them). Even if just build from instructions you learn techniques.

That's one of the reasons that I don't like the term AFOL... "fan" seems to me to have a pretty passive connotation... fan of a TV show, musician, movie... things you just sit there and watch.

Like most have said, it's definitely not childish. It can be a hobby, or an art form, like this for example. Somebody made this completely with lego.

definitly not, thats pretty epic, considering it was made with little plastic blocks !!!!

You could ask the same question to a model plane, train or RC car builder, do they feel childish.....I say not.

Lego is an art for an adult, not childish, but childlike....simple joy, make something new and show it to a child....a smile then that child playing with it is your reward.

I'd say the same thing had 'lt' not already said it. As a child, Lego is a toy that requires imagination. Something that many adults lose once the real world hits them. To many of us it still may be a "toy" but, it is our hobby. If not Lego I'd collect more Hot Wheels or Matchbox. It's just that reason, Lego being a toy, that would make someone question: "Is this childish?" Collectable NASCAR replicas are still technically toy are a good example and thousands of adults line their garages, homes, and personal bars with these things, as well as, hands a duplicated to their child. That can be said about anything able to be played with. Like those listed by 'lt'.

Lego makes me happy, I like designing, I'm good with my hands, and I've studied city planning and will soon start working towards an engineering degree. Lego city makes sense to me. Hope you end up getting into it, it's a great colorful hobby to have.

Lego City is Marked and Produced with a age range but that is just the recommended age for the complexity of the model. That is good and bad, first good: "You can Customize them like the City Corner or city home you could simply make them a modular. The Bad side: You tend to stay away from the model like previously posted, also the pricing can get a little tight. Hope That Helps!

Only thing childish is 99.9% of the new sets. They just don't hold thier own to the 80's/early 90's stuff. For example, take any jet from an airport now. They just look like a reg toy. And cars? Most don't even have a car door! They make semi trucks that are as big as a city block. Meh.

Perhaps using Lego is childish, having fun, being distracted from the concerns of the world, using your imagination and not being constrained by preconcieved notions. If this is childish that is fine with me.

The only one who can think it's childish is a childish person. I call this kind of guys 'provincials', because they think like a conformist and a bit uneducated provincial one. It's not the medium-brick that is childish, but the way you use it.

Of course LEGO isn't childish. But when I was too old to be buying it for myself and too young to be buying it for a child, it was a bit embarrassing walking through Tescos with a 5-12 set!

2) Does it hurt anyone else?

If the answer to both of those is yes, as it is for a great many people, then things like 'childish' aren't really important. Life is too short to let other people dictate the things you are allowed to enjoy.

I assume you ment yes to the first question but no to the second

As I am currently rebuilding all my old childhood LEGO sets I am reliving my childhood, but that is not the same as being childish. I look at them now with an adult perspective and can appreciate them in different ways, seeing potential I wouldn't have necessarily seen as a child.

I had a simalar chat with my wife last night about my lego collection and basicly I said acting your age all the time is boring and who cares what other people think, I love lego and modelling in general I'm only 29 and I'm in no rush to grow up.

My advice - don't do it! My gf got me back into Lego at Christmas when she bought me the Grand Emporium, and I've now spent almost $2000 in less than 2 months! It's just not worth it!

I wouldn't go as far to say "don't do it". I too spend way more than I or anybody should on, what is still technically, a toy. I believe its a good, bad habit to have. If I spend a lot, it's because I wanted to. I'm happy with all of my purchases and I'd say so is everyone else when they buy.
