Posted March 4, 201113 yr I know even at full retail ($60 US or a mind-boggling $80 Canadian), this set is over-priced. But I think this set is definitely has play value at $30.00 at least for parts, and a nice wind turbine. With modification and adding powerfunctions, this could be really fun. Not quite as nice as the vestas set, mind you, but could be a viable alternative. I refused to pay full retail, but jumped when Lego had them on clearance in January after the new year. I see that Ebay sellers are trying hard to sell them above the $40 mark and lots of them are available at the $35 US on Bricklink. I just dont understand the complete lack of appeal.... well, as a set collector, this set would be as far apart as possible from my list of wanted sets, but for playability, it isnt that bad. On a side-note. I was going to hookup only a powerfunction medium motor and battery box to it to spin the blades, but the motor was too fast. I just got a IR remote control (with speed controller) and a IR receiver. This actually worked very good. I was thinking of getting a micromotor but I think this could be better long-term.
March 4, 201113 yr Well it was only $20 USD for 2 months (December,January) Because on sale so you could have gotten lots with that great price! *Fuzzy*
March 4, 201113 yr In Oz when this set came out it was cheaper than it was in the US ! So I brought one and I don't regret it at all...at least my son would have something for science class or show & tell at school ! Brick On !
March 4, 201113 yr In Oz when this set came out it was cheaper than it was in the US ! I still think it was a bit expensive at the AU$58 that I saw it advertised at in Oz. I never saw it on the shelves though. I'll get on from Bricklink I think. I don't really need any more trucks but the wind turbine is cool.
March 4, 201113 yr Greetings! Just a thought.... But it seems that this set came out as a result of the aftermath/frenzy that was the more detailed #4999 Vestas. Though the 7747 offered a nicely detailed truck I do believe the wind turbine was a bit shorthanded on the details (just my opinion). I believe that most of us would have been very happy with a $100-$120???? asking price for a set like the 4999 than the price the 7747 set went for. Set 4999 also included power functions with I believed made the set more desirable. Just a few thoughts....
March 4, 201113 yr In Oz it was available at BigW as a July toy sale exclusive and was available for up to a year on and off. True, the Vestas set is better.....but the retail price would be in the hundreds of dollars and be like a modular set. I guess if anyone who has the cheaper of the two wind turbines, could modify into a sort of Vestas set.....the little service van should have been done as seperate set.
March 4, 201113 yr I think this wasn't popular because I think people were expecting much more after what Lego did with the Vestas exclusive.
March 4, 201113 yr It just wasn't very good. I'm sure it inspired people to make their own. I thought the turbine was cool, but not the truck, and it seems like you could build your own for a lot less and make it a lot nicer. They should have added an e-motor and LED to make it actually work; that would have been interesting.
March 4, 201113 yr In Oz it was available at BigW as a July toy sale exclusive and was available for up to a year on and off. I'm pretty sure your experience is because you live in a less populated state where exclusives don't sell out the minute they get onto the shelves. In Melbourne and Sydney these were instantly sold out, and I was never able to order it from Big W's online store. It's one of the things that really *$^&%& me off about exclusives in Australia. I can't find them unless I check shops every day and am lucky enough to be there the day they are stocked. A lot of the clearance deals on the Aussie sales thread also only happen in QLD etc. Stuff sells out in Melbourne and Sydney. I would have thought the retailers would twig and and stock more here instead of shipping to QLD.
March 4, 201113 yr i Feel your pain Peterab!! never ever saw it in Melbourne!! and i wont pay $120 for it .... BL will be my next stop when i get some funds!!
March 4, 201113 yr I liked it and waited for it to drop in price before I got it. I think there are other sets that take priority over this set for a majority of people...
March 4, 201113 yr I liked it and waited for it to drop in price before I got it. I think there are other sets that take priority over this set for a majority of people... I agree with this statement. 7747 was not on the top of my list but I wanted it when I saw it was half off on S@H. I did not like the design of the trailer to the truck and the trailer's rear axle lifted off the ground. I modified the design of the 5th wheel to level the trailer's axles. The transport runs well now on flat surfaces.
March 4, 201113 yr I waited for a sale to get mine. I kept the wind turbine intact and parted the trucks for MOCs.
March 4, 201113 yr I actually like the set, especially the turbine and the truck. The trailer is crap.... The truck is very nice, although, i think it is built almost too big, so it looks out of proportion, when you see the wheels im comparison with the truck. But, if it would be cheaper, i would buy a second set, that's for sure.. it now costs still almost Eur 50,- here...and i think there is no chance it will get cheaper.... Greetz, LegoSjaak
March 4, 201113 yr Trailer from this set, I modified to fill in the odd looking gap in the front of the trailer (on top).
March 4, 201113 yr I thought this set was great when it came out, finally my Lego City would have some power The truck is just another truck, nothing special there but the escort vehicle I thought was cool. I wouldn't have gotten it if it was more expensive even if it had a PF motor. I've always thought about buying parts off BL to make a few more but dismissed this endeavor as I could spend my monies on something more worthwhile, but overall as a set targetted at the specific audience I thought it was good
March 4, 201113 yr I like this a lot. I noticed a lot of you said you don't like the truck, especially the trailer. I, however, like the truck. The design that allows the trailer to extend was a nice touch. It serves as a nice platform to "transport" larger items (i.e. a train car) with slight modification. I do agree on the discussion on it being overpriced. I snatched up a few when TLG sold it for $27 dollars, but the original was too high. I picked my first off of eBay for around $55, and that, IMO, was way to high. I just wish it was a little bit taller. It doesn't look right next to my Vestas.
March 4, 201113 yr i Feel your pain Peterab!! never ever saw it in Melbourne!! and i wont pay $120 for it .... BL will be my next stop when i get some funds!! I was lucky to have the day off when Big W had its toy sale in 09 and was able to buy two sets, One to keep and one to open. This was when I was livng in Melb but I only got the last two sets. I think this was a good set and I was please I got it in oz as New Zealand would of been $120 plus.
March 5, 201113 yr I really like this set. Picked up 6 from KMart in New Zealand for $80 each when they first came out. Bought extra tower pieces on BrinkLink to double the height. Motorised 2 so far with red micromotors and train controllers to get a slow spin speed.
March 5, 201113 yr I love this set. Bought 2 of them. I really wish I knew why it isn't so popular. I tried a few different ways to power it with powerfunctions. Do-able, but not that easy. I get the awesomeness of Vestas 4999, but the price difference $500 US, verses $40 dollars US for 7747 is killer.
March 5, 201113 yr I don't have micro motors to motorize mine so I went for the wind turbine construction phase instead. It also makes a good load for 4 wide trucks and a big crane. I find it to be a good set. There is a lot of fun things you can do with it. Even the truck/trailer parts are useful for other projects:
March 7, 201113 yr I thought about this set, but I don't think it would fit in with the rest of LEGO City. The tallest buildings I have are three stories, and I was afraid this would dwarf them. Not to mention I suspect my cats would have had fun knocking it over every day. It was tempting, but like the Combine and Bulldozer I just think it was too big to fit in with other City models.
March 7, 201113 yr It was tempting, but like the Combine and Bulldozer I just think it was too big to fit in with other City models. Unlike the Combine and Bulldozer though, if anything this model is too small compared to city buildings. These things are huge in real life.
